Supreme Court rejects Biden admin. push to force Texas ER doctors to perform abortions
|
|
The United States Supreme Court has rejected the Biden administration’s request to appeal a ruling that prohibits them from forcing emergency room doctors to perform abortions in Texas. In an orders list released Monday morning, the Supreme Court declined without comment to grant certiorari in the case of Becerra et al. v. Texas et al., which is centered on whether the federal government can interpret federal law to require emergency room staff to performing abortions. By declining to take up the case, the Supreme Court leaves in place an appeals court panel decision from earlier this year that stops the Biden administration from requiring emergency facilities in Texas to provide abortions.
In July 2022, shortly after the Supreme Court had overturned Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, under the Biden administration, issued guidance claiming that the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act required hospital emergency staff to provide abortions. EMTALA was passed in 1986 and is centered on "public access to emergency services regardless of ability to pay," requiring hospitals enrolled in Medicare to provide everyone with medical services. "Hospitals are then required to provide stabilizing treatment for patients with EMCs. If a hospital is unable to stabilize a patient within its capability, or if the patient requests, an appropriate transfer should be implemented," explains an EMTALA information page. Biden Says DeSantis ‘Cooperative’ Ahead of Hurricane Milton Landfall
|
|
President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been “cooperative” with the federal government ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall on Wednesday.
The comment follows Vice President Kamala Harris’s accusation that DeSantis did not answer her phone call ahead of the hurricane.
Biden said that DeSantis, a Republican, “has been cooperative” and has “gotten all that he needs” from the White House.

“I literally gave him my personal phone number to call,” Biden added, referring to DeSantis. “So I don’t know—there was a rough start in some places, but every governor, every governor from Florida to North Carolina, has been fully cooperative and supportive and acknowledged what this team is doing.”
Biden also warned that Milton “could be the worst storm to hit Florida in over a century” as the now Category 5 storm heads across the Gulf of Mexico.
On Monday, Harris told reporters that DeSantis was being “utterly irresponsible” by not speaking with her in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in Florida last month.
“Moments of crisis, if nothing else, should really be the moment that anyone who calls themselves a leader says they’re going to put politics aside and put the people first,” Harris said of DeSantis.
In response, DeSantis said that he was unaware that Harris attempted to contact him.
“I saw the news report—I didn’t know she tried to contact me. ... My focus is exactly where it should be,” DeSantis told “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday. (The Epoch Times) Read more.

Afghan man in Oklahoma plotted Election Day terror attack in US on behalf of ISIS, Justice Department says
|

OKLAHOMA CITY — An Afghan national living in Oklahoma City was charged Tuesday with conspiring to conduct a terrorist attack on Election Day in the United States on behalf of ISIS, the Department of Justice announced.
Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, conspired and attempted to "provide material support to ISIS and obtained firearms and ammunition to conduct a violent attack on U.S. soil in the name of ISIS," the Justice Department said in a release Tuesday. If convicted of all charges, Tawhedi, faces up to 35 years in prison.
He and his brother-in-law were arrested Monday after they purchased two AK-47 rifles and ammunition from an undercover FBI employee in a rural location in Oklahoma, the FBI reported in a court affidavit. Tawhedi admitted after his arrest that he and his brother-in-law bought the guns to commit an attack on Election Day "targeting large gatherings of people," according to the affidavit, and said that they expected to die in the attack and be martyrs.
On July 25, he used his Google account to access webcams for the White House and Washington Monument, according to the affidavit.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department foiled the plot.
“We will continue to combat the ongoing threat that ISIS and its supporters pose to America’s national security, and we will identify, investigate, and prosecute the individuals who seek to terrorize the American people," he said. (Yahoo) Read more here.

2. UAV fired towards Eilat intercepted outside Israel's borders - Israel National News
A UAV which was fired towards Eilat was successfully intercepted by the IDF on Wednesday evening.
“A short while ago, the IAF successfully intercepted a UAV that approached Israel over the Red Sea. The UAV did not cross into Israeli territory,” said the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.
The pro-Iranian militias in Iraq claimed responsibility for the firing, claiming they "fired a UAV at a 'vital target' in Eilat." (Read more)

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghch iwarned Israel “not to test Iran’s resolve” as the Jewish state continued to discuss plans to strike its arch foe, saying any attack on the Islamic Republic would be met with harsh retaliation.
“We tell the Zionist regime [Israel] not to test Iran’s resolve, as any attack on Iran will be met with an even stronger response than before,” Araghchi was quoted in Iranian media as saying at a conference in Tehran on Tuesday titled, “Al-Aqsa Flood; The Beginning of Nasrallah.”
The conference was held one year after Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre across southern Israel, which the Palestinian terrorist group named “Al-Aqsa Flood.” The title of the gathering also referenced Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah who was killed in an Israeli airstrike last month. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Monday doubled down on French President Emmanuel Macron’s call last week for a partial arms embargo on Israel during a press conference in Jerusalem.
“Today, to guarantee the security of Israel, to guarantee the security of the Israelis, the use of force must give way to the use of dialogue and diplomacy,” he said in French. “And this is why France, like most countries in the world, is calling in Gaza as in Lebanon, for a ceasefire. And when we call for a ceasefire, we cannot at the same time provide offensive weapons to the belligerents. It is a question of consistency.”
Macron had said on Saturday that countries should not be providing Israel with weapons that could be used in its war with Hamas in Gaza, leading to tensions with Jerusalem.

5. Dig Reveals Assyrian King Sennacherib’s Invasion’s Impact on Judean Economy - Jewish Press
Sennacherib was the king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire from the death of his father Sargon II in 705 BCE to his own death in 681 BCE. The second king of the Sargonid dynasty, Sennacherib is one of the most famous Assyrian kings for the role he plays in the Hebrew Bible, which describes his campaign in the Levant. Other events of his reign include his destruction of the city of Babylon in 689 BCE and his renovation and expansion of the last great Assyrian capital, Nineveh.
Recent excavations in Jerusalem’s Mordot Arnona neighborhood have revealed indirect evidence of the renowned Assyrian military campaign, famously documented in both Biblical and Assyrian records. The Israel Antiquities Authority, with funding from the Israel Land Authority, discovered two administrative buildings constructed one above the other at the site.
The older building predates the Assyrian campaign of 701 BCE, while the newer structure was built in the early 7th century BCE, shortly after Assyria suppressed King Hezekiah’s rebellion. Archaeologists uncovered more than 180 storage jar handles bearing stamp impressions with Hebrew inscriptions, many of which read “(belonging) to the king” – a reference to the Kingdom of Judah. A former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says “immunity passports” for Americans to prove they have taken the COVID-19 vaccine might help the country get “back to a new normal.”
Dr. Thomas Frieden told CBS on Wednesday that “done right, immunity passports could be one of a series of things that could help us get to a new normal as soon as possible.”

5. Hurricane Milton makes landfall as Category 3 on Florida's west coast - Fox News
Hurricane Milton made landfall Wednesday night as a "dangerous Category 3" storm near Siesta Key, on Florida's central west coast, the National Hurricane Center said. Siesta Key is a barrier island located just south of Sarasota. Milton had sustained winds of 120 mph at landfall.
The hurricane center warned those in the Tampa and St. Petersburg areas to shelter in place as "extremely dangerous hurricane-force winds" were spreading through the area.
Earlier in the day, the National Weather Service in Miami observed at least four twisters, including a "multi-vortex tornado," as meteorologists reported storm surge starting to arrive along the southwestern Florida coast. Tornado warnings were issued for multiple cities, adding to hurricane and storm surge warnings already in place for many of those same places. (Read more)

6. Multiple deaths confirmed in Fort Pierce after tornado outbreak - 2 News
FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — Multiple people were killed Wednesday afternoon after as many as a dozen tornadoes ripped through a Fort Pierce community.
St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson confirmed deaths at Spanish Lakes Country Club Village, on Spanish Lakes Boulevard, but did not provide a specific number of people that have died.
In an interview, Pearson explained that his deputies and state emergency crews will go door-to-door at the community, which sits off Turnpike Feeder Road, west of Route 1, to conduct search and rescue operations. In all, more than 100 people are looking for people who may be trapped.
"This is like nothing other we've seen," Pearson added, as he went on to describe a scene where between six and 12 confirmed high-strength tornadoes tore through the area within a span of 20 minutes.
The neighborhood where the Sheriff was when he spoke with CBS12 News was filled with modular homes and Pearson said the storms went right through them. He said homes and commercial businesses were destroyed.
"Every possible thing we can do is being done to search the area. Check the residences and, if there is anyone inside the residences, we're going to work through the storm to get them out," Pearson pledged.
In addition to support from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Highway Patrol, the National Guard is also on the scene.
Pearson also described the SLCSO hangar as a total loss after a possible tornado ripped through the building.
In an earlier statement, Pearson said the 10,000 square foot facility was destroyed in a matter of seconds by what he called a "devastating tornado."
An SLCSO spokesperson explained the steel structure housed their vehicles. Pearson estimated it would take millions of dollars to replace the hangar. (Read more)

Many people are shocked at the support the Biden-Harris Administration has given to Iran’s terrorist regime. This, however, is no new thing. Democratic presidents and administrations have in the shadows supported the terror-sponsoring state since as early as Jimmy Carter and that support has transcended Democrat presidents to this day. It was Jimmy Carter who wanted the Shah of Iran, an American ally, out of his office due to what Carter perceived as humanitarian issues. The radical Ayatollahs came to power and rewarded Carter’s by-standing with the taking of American hostages at the US Embassy in Teran. President Reagan ended the siege and got the hostages released.
Even though Iran was exporting terror during the Clinton Administration, Clinton deferred military action and took the appeasement route, saying in January 1998 that the US “regrets the estrangement of our two nations … and I hope that the day will soon come when we can enjoy once again good relations with Iran.” Clinton sought to negotiate with the terrorist state. His Secretary of State apologized to Iran for CIA involvement in an attempted coup in 1953, lifted sanctions, and offered to release frozen Iranian assets in US bank accounts. Sound familiar? The Obama Administration further appeased Iran by signing a nuclear deal with the terrorist state, and giving it some $150 billion in cash. Terrorism against Israel accelerated. Runaway stars could influence the cosmos far past their home galaxies
|
|
|
Dozens of fugitive stars were caught fleeing a dense star cluster in a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. The swarm of speeding stars could mean that such runaways had a bigger influence on cosmic evolution than previously thought, astronomers report October 9 in Nature.
Massive stars are born in young clusters, packed so close together that they can jostle each other out of place. Sometimes, encounters between pairs of massive stars or neighboring supernova explosions can send a star zipping out of the cluster altogether, to seek its fortune in the wider galaxy and beyond.
Astronomer Mitchel Stoop and his colleagues searched for runaway stars around a huge cluster of massive stars called Radcliffe 136 using data from the Gaia spacecraft on the speeds and positions of billions of stars (SN: 6/13/22). R136 is located about 170,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy that orbits the Milky Way.
The cluster “is an iconic object,” says astrophysicist Sally Oey of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who was not involved in the new work. The view from Earth’s neighborhood is so clear, “we can really look at things up close and personal.” Read More
