Senators Aim to Reverse China’s ‘Economic Warfare,’ Repeal Most Favored Nation Trade Status
|
|
As Chinese communist officials forecast an impending “conflict” with the U.S., congressional Republicans have introduced legislation to cut off the Chinese Communist Party’s greatest source of strength: its economic might. The bill would allow Congress to hold the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) accountable for human rights violations, including forced abortion and denying the rights of Christians to worship.
Unless the U.S. reverses its allegedly hostile policy, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang warned Tuesday, “conflict and confrontation” would become inevitable. Much of China’s military might has been built on the strength of its global trade balance with the U.S., created by its decades-long Most Favored Nation (MFN) status. Experts say the policy cost millions of U.S. jobs while pumping more than $8 trillion into the economy of America’s greatest global adversary.
MFN status makes Chinese products eligible for low- or zero-tariff levels. Under Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR), China receives privileged trade status immediately. The China Trade Relations Act (S. 125) would require the president to grant, or withhold, MFN status and allow Congress to override his decision. It also expands human rights abuses that would disqualify China from receiving favorable trade terms to include operation of concentration camps, forced abortion or sterilization, suppressing religious liberty, the use of slave labor, engaging in economic espionage against U.S. companies, harassing Chinese nationals living outside the PRC, and organ harvesting.
“For 20 years, communist China has held permanent most-favored-nation status, which has supercharged the loss of American manufacturing jobs. China never deserved this privilege in the first place, and China certainly does not deserve it today,” said Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), one of the bill’s four Republican sponsors in the Senate. “The Chinese Communist Party is not America’s friend, and it is not a force for good in the world. From human rights abuses to the theft of U.S. jobs and intellectual property, the CCP must be held accountable,” said Senator Ted Budd (R-N.C.). [The Washington Stand] Read more.

White House Reverses Course, Gives Congress Green Light to Pass Bill Banning TikTok
|
|
The White House has reversed direction this week, saying it would support a Senate bill that would outlaw TikTok in the United States. The Biden administration had been at a standstill for two years over how to deal with the threat to national security posed by the Chinese-owned mobile app.
U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Tuesday welcomed a bipartisan bill that would allow the Biden administration to ban the video-sharing app. “This legislation would empower the United States government to prevent certain foreign governments from exploiting technology services operating in the United States in a way that poses risks to Americans’ sensitive data and our national security,” he said in a statement. “We look forward to continue working with both Democrats and Republicans on this bill, and urge Congress to act quickly to send it to the President’s desk.”
On Tuesday, Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and John Thune (R-S.D.) introduced the measure called the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology (RESTRICT) Act. The bipartisan bill is the most recent proposal that seeks to fully outlaw the app due to mounting concerns that it could be used to spy on Americans. (Epoch Times) Read more here.

SVB Chief Sold $3.6 Million in Stock Shortly Before Bank’s Collapse
|
|
Documents show that the CEO of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) sold $3.6 million in shares of the failed financial institution’s parent company several weeks before its collapse—the biggest U.S. bank failure since 2008 that sent a shudder of anxiety across markets.
A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) shows that Greg Becker, who joined SVB as a loan officer three decades ago before becoming CEO about a decade later, sold 12,451 shares of the bank’s parent company SVB Financial Group on Feb. 27.
Becker sold the shares in accordance with a trading plan filed on Jan. 26, a little over a month before the group sent a letter to stakeholders (pdf) saying it was looking to raise over $2 billion in capital after taking losses.
An inquiry sent to SVB outside of normal working hours asking whether Becker was aware of the bank’s plans to try and raise capital was not immediately returned.
The announcement sent SVB stock plunging and prompted its lightning-fast unwind. The bank’s shares fell more than 60 percent after the announcement, wiping out $9.4 billion in market value and sparking fears of contagion.
“Lots of chatter today about the possibility of generalized U.S. banking system stress due to SVB troubles. Three summary things on this: While the U.S. banking system as a whole is solid, and it is, that does not mean that every bank is,” stated economist Mohamed A. El-Erian in a tweet. Elon Musk: “Free Jacob Chansley”
|

On Thursday, video footage resurfaced of Jacob Chansley, otherwise known as the “QAnon Shaman,” calling for peace on January 6th.
The footage is additional evidence that obliterates the narrative that Chansley was a ‘violent insurrectionist.’ Chansley called for everyone there to be peaceful.
He never committed an act of violence.
Video footage shows Chansley reading a tweet from President Trump calling for protestors to “go home in peace.” “President Donald Trump has asked everybody to go home! So what are we going to do? We are going to obey our president, we are going to do what he asks for, and we are going to go home,” said Chansley.
“We are not Antifa!” he added.

1. Iran-Saudi deal to restore ties seen as diplomatic blow in Israel - World Israel News
A day after Saudi Arabia outlined its conditions for a normalization agreement with Israel, the Gulf kingdom on Friday restored ties with the Jewish state’s archnemesis, Iran.
In a deal brokered in and by Beijing, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to reestablish diplomatic ties and reopen embassies within the next two months.
The deal comes amid diplomatic attempts to end a yearslong war in Yemen, in which Iran and Saudi Arabia are on opposing sides.
On Thursday, Saudi Arabia laid out its demands from the U.S. in return for establishing diplomatic ties with Israel, which would include support for a civilian nuclear program, fewer restrictions on arms sales, and security guarantees. Of note, the list of demands did not include Palestinian statehood as a precondition for signing a peace deal with Israel – something that Saudi Arabia has on several occasions emphasized would be a prerequisite. 2. Knesset Constitution Committee to discuss changes to judicial reforms - Israel National News
The Knesset Constitution Committee will convene today (Sunday) for further discussion of the first part of the government's planned judicial reform ahead of the legislation's second and third readings.
The legislation in question would involve changing the composition of the committee which selects Supreme Court justices and establishing that Basic Laws are immune from judicial review.
The committee is meeting despite President Isaac Herzog's call last week for the current judicial reform legislation to be completely shelved. "The set of legislation currently being discussed in the committee needs to be entirely erased, and fast. It is wrong, it is destructive, it undermines the democratic foundations of the country. Therefore, it must be replaced with another, agreed-upon outline, and immediately," he said. (Read more)

3. After Netanyahu trip to Rome, Italian foreign minister lands in Israel - Times of Israel
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister to Giorgia Meloni, lands in Israel ahead of his meeting tomorrow evening with his Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen.
The two will sign a number of joint declarations and agreements on deepening ministerial dialogue on energy, the Abraham Accords, Iran and other issues. Cohen will bring up Israel’s desire to see Italy’s embassy moved to Jerusalem, according to an Israeli diplomatic source, but no breakthrough is expected at this time.
Tajani is also scheduled to visit Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. (Read more)

4. Netanyahu talks business ties, security with Italian Prime Minister Meloni in Rome - JNS
(March 10, 2023 / JNS) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Rome on Friday with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Chigi Palace, the latter’s official residence.
He also met with dozens of heads of Italian companies and discussed Israeli water innovations in the context of recent Italian droughts and cybersecurity, among other subjects, according to the prime minister’s office. He told the business leaders that Japan has seen billions of dollars worth of bilateral trade increases following his visit to Japan and the Japanese prime minister’s visit to Israel.
“In his view, there is great potential for commercial and economic cooperation with Italy as well, which constitutes a major opportunity,” per Netanyahu’s office, which added that he planned to ask his Italian counterpart to hold a government-to-government meeting and a large gathering of Israeli and Italian business owners. 5. Hamas: ‘We vow to inflict more painful terror attacks’ - World Israel News
Hamas vowed to inflict more terror attacks hours after Palestinian terrorists carried out attacks in Samaria and in Tel Aviv.
“We vow more painful strikes throughout our occupied land as long as [Israeli] aggression continues and its crimes escalate,” the Gaza-ruling terrorist group said in a statement on Friday.
The comments came after a terrorist armed with explosives and knives smuggled into a farm near the settlement of Karnei Shomron. The terrorist was shot and killed by an Israeli farmer.
Hours only, a Palestinian gunman shot and wounded three Israelis in downtown Tel Aviv, two of whom remain in critical condition. (Read more)

1. Russia will have to rely on nukes, cyberattacks, and China since its military is being thrashed in Ukraine, US intel director says - Insider
Russia's high losses and wasted resources in Ukraine have made it less of a traditional military threat and will leave it reliant on "asymmetric" options such as nuclear weapons, cyberattacks, and space technology, and other countries like China, the US intelligence director said Wednesday. At a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines said Russia "has suffered losses that will require years of rebuilding and leave it less capable of posing a conventional military threat."
As a result, Haines said, "Russia will become even more reliant on asymmetric options such as nuclear, cyber, space capabilities, and on China." She also noted that Moscow will have future trouble operating as a leading power both in Eurasia and "on the global stage" because of both its weakened status as a military power and global backlash against Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine a little over a year ago.
Discussions on Russia's relationship with China have also been ongoing, including speculation that Beijing might be considering sending lethal aid to Russia. The US and other partner nations have warned of "consequences" if Beijing takes that step. China has in turn criticized the West for its provision of weapons to Ukraine. (Read more)

2. Eyeing China, Pentagon asks Congress to boost funds for Pacific forces - POLITICO
the report dated Thursday is a congressionally mandated independent assessment of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command’s needs, and calls for $15.3 billion in fiscal 2024, with another $71.8 billion spread out over the next four years.
The report warns of China’s rapid military buildup, and the increasing pressure on countries in the region to bend to its will. It follows a concerted push by the Pentagon in recent weeks to expand American military influence in the region, including a flurry of new deals with regional partners. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently traveled to Manila to announce an agreement with the Philippines giving the U.S. increased access to bases there, and the Marine Corps in January activated a new base on Guam.
“The security environment in the Indo-Pacific is becoming more dangerous and defined by an increasing risk of confrontation and crisis,” according to the report. “The strategic competition with the U.S. now encompasses all domains to include efforts to coerce our strongest allies in an attempt to dominate the region.” (Read more)

3. Democrats hammer McCarthy to reveal spending cuts ahead of Biden's long-awaited budget release - Washington Examiner
Democrats are putting the ball in Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) court in a standoff over the debt ceiling as President Joe Biden releases his budget proposal on Thursday, pressuring the House speaker to unveil his own spending plan.
Biden and his congressional allies are eager for Republicans to roll out a budget resolution, anticipating that the document will become political ammunition showing the GOP intends to make deep cuts to popular federal programs in an effort to balance the budget.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates lawmakers need to raise the debt limit by September to avoid default, casting a shadow over the entire appropriations process as many Republicans call for spending to be pared back in exchange for raising the nation’s borrowing limit.
“Show us your plan” has become a rallying cry from Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as he and other Democrats raise the specter of cuts to food stamps, Medicaid, and other federal programs. The Senate majority leader has even goaded Republicans by questioning whether the GOP wants to cut funding to veterans and first responders.
“We continue to wait and wait and wait for Speaker McCarthy’s plan on the debt ceiling,” Schumer said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday. (Read more)

4. Twitter Files’ Hearing Descends Into Anarchy As Dems Push Journalist To Reveal His Sources - Daily Caller
Democrats went after journalist Matt Taibbi in an attempt to pressure him to reveal his sources relating to the Twitter Files at a House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday.
Democratic Rep. Sylvia Garcia of Texas said she wanted to follow up on questions from ranking member Democratic Del. Stacey E. Plaskett of the Virgin Islands and asked Taibbi when Elon Musk first contacted him regarding writing the Twitter files. When Taibbi hesitated, Garcia said, “I just need a date, sir.”
“But I can’t give it to you unfortunately because this is a question of sourcing and I don’t give up — I’m a journalist — I don’t reveal my sources,” Taibbi responded.
Taibbi is a left-leaning, award-winning author and investigative reporter and one of the journalists who has participated in posting The Twitter Files, which are internal Twitter documents revealing alleged wrongdoing between Twitter and government agencies. Musk promoted the public release of the Twitter Files after taking over the company. (Read more)

5. Crime problems in Democrat-run cities sting Biden White House - Just the News
Crime-related problems plaguing major Democrat-run cities such as Washington, D.C. have reached all the way to the White House.
President Biden said he plans to sign legislation that blocks Washington, D.C.'s Revised Criminal Code Act of 2022, a local bill that loosens sentencing for certain offenses amid a crime surge in the nation's capital. The bill to overturn D.C.'s legislation passed in the Democrat-led Senate on Wednesday evening after having previously passed in the GOP-led House.
Following Biden's pledge to sign the bill rescinding the D.C. criminal reforms, the D.C. Council said it would withdraw its legislation, but the Senate moved forward to block the local bill anyway.
The D.C. legislation eliminates the majority of mandatory sentences for violent crimes such as carjackings and robberies. (Read more)

6. Louisville police use excessive force, invalid warrants and discriminatory stops, DOJ review finds - NBC News
The Louisville Metro Police Department and the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro government engaged in a pattern of unconstitutional behavior by routinely using excessive force, conducting searches based on invalid warrants and unlawfully discriminating against Black people in enforcement activities, a wide-ranging federal investigation found.
The review, conducted by the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, also found that police violate the rights of those "engaged in protected speech critical of policing" and that some officers used racial slurs about Black citizens. The city has reached an agreement in principle to resolve the constitutional violations found by federal investigators, the Justice Department said.
In a press conference Wednesday morning, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said he and Louisville Metro Police interim Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel "are taking action to reform and improve how our police department operates. The U.S. Department of Justice is demanding that we take action. The people of Louisville are demanding that we take action," said Greenberg, who along with Gwinn-Villaroel was sworn-in in January 2023. (Read more)

7. NYC Considers Sending Illegals to College at Taxpayer Expense - Todd Starnes
New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) wants taxpayers to fund “free” college for illegal immigrants.
The first year alone would cost around $1.2 million, the New York Post reports.
The newly created Office of Asylum Seeker Operations would oversee the Democrat mayor’s plan to send at least 100 illegals to upstate for 12 months of classes with room and board.
House Republican Chairwoman Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) told The Post Adams is “making a permanent welfare system for illegal immigrants in New York state.”
She added, “By spending New Yorkers’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars on college classes for migrants, he is incentivizing and rewarding illegal immigration simply to export the crisis of Democrats’ own making out of New York City.” (Read more)

8. McConnell suffered concussion in fall, will remain hospitalized for several days - CBS News
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell suffered a concussion after tripping at a Washington hotel on Wednesday and is expected to remain hospitalized for several days, a spokesman for the senator said.
The senator from Kentucky, 81, was attending a private dinner when he tripped. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
"Leader McConnell tripped at a dinner event Wednesday evening and has been admitted to the hospital and is being treated for a concussion. He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment," spokesman David Popp said Thursday. "The Leader is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes." (Read more)

House GOP Questions Whether Biden Admin Suppressed National Archive Statements in Classified Documents Case
|
|
|
|
The Republican-led House Committee on Oversight and Accountability is raising new questions as to whether the Biden administration pressured the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to avoid issuing a public statement on President Joe Biden’s handling of potentially classified documents.
The questions about the White House’s role in the classified documents case come about after NARA general counsel Gary Stern appeared for a transcribed interview with the Oversight Committee on Jan. 31. Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) said that, during this interview, Stern described having prepared a statement on Jan. 9 on NARA’s behalf, addressing the news that documents with classified markings were found at Biden’s former office space and Delaware residence. NARA did not release Stern’s initial statement and Stern testified that someone from outside NARA held back the release of the prepared statement. He did not specify which outside individual withheld the NARA statement on the Biden classified documents case.
Comer sent a letter to White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients on Tuesday, asking whether anyone from the Biden administration was involved in suppressing the NARA statement. Comer specifically asked Zients if any White House employee or representative of the president “inform[ed] any employee of NARA to withhold any public statements regarding President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents.” Comer also asked for any documents or communications the White House may have regarding a potential request that NARA avoid releasing a public statement on Biden’s classified documents case. Chinese Communists Infiltrate Schools
|

On March 7, 2023, Parents Defending Education requested an investigation into the Alexandria, Virginia–based TJ Partnership Fund (TJPF), fundraising arm for the arguably most prestigious high school in America: the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). Over the past seven years, TJPF has raised over $1 million for the TJHSST. Why would that be a problem? Well, it’s because some of the money raised has been coming from groups with strong links to China’s military.
In a recent press release, Parents Defending Education exposes some questionable donors. Allegedly, TJPF received at least $350,000 from the Ameson Education and Cultural Exchange Foundation. And that is a problem because Sean Zang, Ameson’s founder and executive vice president, has ties to Beijing’s United Front Work Department. And according to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, this organization seeks to neutralize any sources of opposition to the policies and the authority of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In 2018, the fund also took at least $500,000 from Chinese department-store giant Shirble HK. Like Zang, Shirble Chairman Yang Xiangvo is also involved with the United Front Work Department.
The TJHSST has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from China’s Tsinghua University, while also helping that university to establish a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) school in China. Tsinghua and TJHSST have mutually sponsored several exchange visits. Tsinghua has close ties with People’s Liberation Army–affiliated laboratories, in addition to being the premier Chinese institution of higher learning.
Despite Parents Defending Education’s sounding an alarm at these Chinese connections, a spokesperson for the Fairfax School District dismisses these concerns over TJPF’s receipt of money with CCP ties, calling the funding — perhaps surprisingly, to many — “not unusual.” (Read more)

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Vows To Release January 6 Capitol Surveillance Footage To Public: Report

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday he plans on releasing thousands of hours of U.S. Capitol riot footage from the surveillance cameras on January 6, 2021.
“We just want to make sure we go through them all, and it takes time,” McCarthy told Breitbart News.
McCarthy told the outlet his intentions during his first exclusive interview since Fox News host Tucker Carlson aired unseen security footage from the Capitol riot. In some of the 44,000 hours of tape, Carlson produced segments showcasing an opposing narrative from legacy media outlets and the now-dissolved House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack.
“This is all about transparency,” McCarthy said when asked why he released the tapes.” I think it’s better for transparency that anyone can make their own decision up, and as we walk through these, there are many more hours of tapes than the January 6 committee told us. It’s not 14,000. It’s 42,000 hours.”
McCarthy assured reporters that Capitol Police were part of the process of sharing clips with Carlson’s team and security would be “taken care of.” Still, Capitol Police told The Hill on Monday that the agency requested “that any clips be shown to us first for a security review” but that so far, it had “only been given the ability to preview a single clip out of the multiple clips that aired.”
Carlson wouldn’t be the only journalist to gain access to the tapes, McCarthy said.
“Like any news organization, different people get exclusives,” he said, noting that CNN and the January 6 Committee had previously received footage that the public watched “all the time, and nobody complained.”

(LifeSiteNews) – Democrats knew that Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick was not killed by Trump supporters during the January 6, 2021 disturbance at the U.S. Capitol but lied about it anyway in order to serve their political interests, according to a Tucker Carlson report based on newly released surveillance video.
In a Monday night broadcast, Carlson recalled how “within hours” of these events unfolding, “the Democratic Party and its publicists in the national news media” instituted an apparent “coordinated” effort to brand these occurrences as “a deadly insurrection.” verything about that phrase is a lie,” he said. “But the slogan worked. The term ‘deadly’ carries enormous emotional power, which is why they used it.”
“To prove the insurrection was deadly, propagandists pointed to the death of an officer called Brian Sicknick,” Carlson continued. “It was their single most powerful indictment of the January 6 protesters, and of Donald Trump and of Republican voters nationally.”
“They repeated that claim for years. They are still repeating it. At first, they told the country that Officer Sicknick was murdered with a fire extinguisher,” he said.
It was only after Trump’s impeachment acquittal was assured that The New York Times retracted the story on February 14. John Nolte of Breitbart commented at the time, “We are now being told that Officer Brian Sicknick was not killed with a fire extinguisher during last month’s Capitol Hill riot. Which means … Once again, we are being taught the lesson that everything the establishment media report eventually ends up being exposed as a big fat lie.”
“To this day, media accounts describe Sicknick as someone who was ‘slain on January 6,’” Carlson said. Yet, “the video we reviewed proves that is a lie.”
“Here is surveillance footage of Sicknick walking in the Capitol after he was supposedly murdered by the mob outside. By all appearances, Sicknick is healthy and vigorous. He’s wearing a helmet, so it’s hard to imagine he was killed by a head injury. Whatever happened to Brian Sicknick was very obviously not the result of violence he suffered at the entrance to the Capitol,” the Fox News host observed.
“This tape overturns the single most powerful and politically useful lie the Democrats have told us about January 6. And it was indeed a lie,” he said. (Read more)

While NASA said its uncrewed Artemis I flight test proved successful, the agency also flagged areas to work on ahead of the next launch.
In a release on Wednesday, NASA said that its ground systems needed for launch and recovery are ready to fly astronauts on missions to the moon.
"We’re learning as much as we possibly can from Artemis I to ensure we fully understand every aspect of our systems and feed those lessons learned into how we plan for and fly crewed missions," Jim Free, NASA's associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, said in a statement. “Revival Broke Out On A Cruise Ship”; Greg Hendricks And BSSM Students Baptized Passengers

Angelo JeanPierre, Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry’s outreach director, saw the glory of God break out amid the Green Bay Packers cruise ship mission trip. He and other BSSM students served with football player Greg Hendricks to lead passengers to Christ.
On his Instagram page, Angelo recounts the glorious moment. Greg led the chapel and “gave a call for fans, current players, and former players to surrender to the Lord and get baptized.”
Many responded and surrendered their lives to Jesus. Also, others were listening and came in front to give their lives to Jesus. “We had four people moved by what was happening to come to the feet of Jesus,” he wrote. “Surrender their life and get baptized!”
“Words can’t express how special this moment was at the pool,” Angelo continued. “The Lord’s presence and love was so tangible. So many people were weeping, worshiping, and surrendering afresh to Him.”
Meanwhile, Greg believes revival broke out in their midst as people gave their lives to Jesus.
He said, “We ended up baptizing them in front of everybody… We have people that didn’t have anything to do with what we were doing here. But then, we also saw people just coming, just really being touched by the Lord… being invited into a greater living and a greater understanding of what that was.”
