Federal Agency Issues New Alerts Targeting
Much of Northern US
|
|
Canadian wildfire smoke is again inundating parts of the northern United States this week, triggering air quality alerts spanning from Montana to Vermont.
The alerts have been issued by the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) across about a dozen states on the morning of July 17, according to a map provided by the agency. Some media outlets estimated that the alerts affect about 70 million people, meaning they would see poor air quality with higher particulate matter.
Major cities under air quality alerts include New York, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Columbus, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, and Des Moines. According to monitoring service IQAir, Washington, Detroit, New York, and Chicago had some of the worst air quality in the world on July 17. However, Washington wasn’t under an NWS air quality alert.
“Air Quality alerts are in place for much of the Great Lakes, Midwest, and northern High Plains,” the NWS stated. “This is due to the lingering thick concentration of Canadian wildfire smoke over these regions. While the concentration of smoke in the atmosphere should begin to wain [sic] by [July 17], there is still enough smoke to support unhealthy air quality that is unhealthy for sensitive groups in parts of these regions into the start of the upcoming week.” (Read more)

IN-DEPTH: Military Families No Longer Want
Their Children to Enlist

More than two dozen military service members reached out to The Epoch Times, saying they are discouraging their children from donning the uniform. This marks the end of a legacy for some families, and a tough decision for all.
Chris Collins served in the Coast Guard for nearly 12 years before “getting kicked out” in 2022 for refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine, he said. And he now plans to “steer” his two children away from joining the military. “It has a lot to do with distrust and the current culture,” he told The Epoch Times.
“The vaccine was a huge thing for me,” Mr. Collins said. “The higher-ups of military leadership, the people I once trusted to have my best interest in mind, flat out ignored everything I said in opposition to the taking the vaccine.” As a result, he was forced to decide to take the vaccine or leave over a decade of service behind.
Brian Wilson began his career in the Florida Army National Guard in the late nineties, transitioning to active duty in 2001 with the Navy. After twenty-one years of service, he resigned his commission in October 2022.
Like Mr. Collins, Mr. Wilson took objection to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate by the secretary of defense and senior leadership, which he considered to be illegal.
“I wasn’t going to participate in, or continue, to be part of an organization giving unlawful orders that violate federal law whenever they feel like it, so my career came to an abrupt halt,” Mr Wilson said. (The Epoch Times) Read more here.

Jordan threatens to hold FBI Director Wray
in contempt of Congress

Rep Jim Jordan said the FBI’s decision not to sufficiently comply with the committee's subpoenas was 'unacceptable'
|
|
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Monday alleging that the FBI has failed to comply with congressional subpoenas and warning to take action if they do not follow through by next week.
The letter specifically cited two subpoenas sent by the committee, one that was "Regarding School Board-related Threats" and its subpoena on "Catholic Domain Perspective."
In the letter, Jordan called the FBI’s actions "unacceptable" and set a new date and time — noon on July 25, 2023 — for the requested materials. If the FBI does not deliver, the committee "will take action" such as holding Wray in contempt of Congress, he said.
"To date, the FBI’s compliance with these subpoenas has been wholly inadequate and has materially impeded the Committee’s oversight efforts," Jordan said in the letter, dated July 17. "After several accommodations, months of persistent outreach by the Committee, and attempts to negotiate and work with the FBI in good faith, we write to notify you that if the FBI does not improve its compliance substantially, the Committee will take action—such as the initiation of contempt of Congress proceedings—to obtain compliance with these subpoenas." Trump Received Letter Stating He Is Target of January 6 Investigation

Former President Donald Trump said that he received a letter on July 17 informing him that he is a target of the special counsel investigation of the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.
Mr. Trump said the Sunday letter from special counsel Jack Smith gave him four days to report to a grand jury. In a message posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, on July 18, the former president suggested that the short deadline may mean he would be arrested and indicted.
Mr. Trump called the letter “HORRIFYING NEWS for our country” and framed it with the backdrop of the two other indictments he is facing amid a heated presidential reelection campaign in which he is dominating the GOP field.
Mr. Trump was charged earlier this year in connection to payments for a non-disclosure agreement in a state case in New York. He was later charged in a federal case in Miami in connection to his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House.
“THIS WITCH HUNT IS ALL ABOUT ELECTION INTERFERENCE AND A COMPLETE AND TOTAL POLITICAL WEAPONIZATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT,” Trump wrote.
Mr. Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to The Epoch Times’ request for a copy of the target letter. The Epoch Times has also asked Mr. Trump’s campaign to answer whether he would present himself to the grand jury as the letter reportedly ordered. (The Epoch Times) Read more here.

1. IDF chief: Reservists’ refusal to serve harms military, national security - Times of Israel
Speaking at a Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting on Tuesday morning, military chief Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said calls by reservists to refuse to serve in protest of the government’s plans to overhaul the judicial system cause harm to the Israel Defense Forces.
“Anyone who calls for not showing up [for duty] harms the IDF and harms the security of the state,” IDF Chief of Staff Halevi said.

2. Protesters launch four-day march to Jerusalem ahead of key bill - World Israel News
Protesters against the government’s planned judicial reform embarked on a four-day march from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Tuesday night, with the intention of sleeping along the way.
The protest march, covering approximately 50 kilometers, began at 8:30 p.m. from the main protest area of Kaplan Street in Tel Aviv, The Jerusalem Post reported.
The march was initiated by Prof. Shikma Bresler and Moshe Redman, prominent figures in the anti-reform protest movements, as well as Ran Harnevo, founder of the Tikva initiative, and Ami Dror, a leader of the high-tech protest. Their objective for this “spontaneous” march, as stated by the organizers, is to exert pressure against what they describe as the “dictatorial intentions of the Israeli government,” the report said. 3. Anti-reform protests: Clashes in Tel Aviv, Ben Gvir arrives at Ayalon Highway - Israel National News
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir arrived on Tuesday evening at an anti-government demonstration on the Ayalon Highway after protesters blocked the road for several hours.
In addition, clashes broke out between protesters and police at a demonstration on Kaplan Street in Tel Aviv.A number of demonstrators lit flares.The police used a water cannon to disperse the protesters.
So far, 45 protesters who tried to disrupt train traffic and who tried to block roads throughout the country were arrested during the demonstrations against the judicial reform. (Read more)

4. Herzog Arrives in US, Immediately Meets with Biden at White House - Jewish Price
Israeli President Isaac Herzog met with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday shortly after 1 pm local time, within hours after his arrival in Washington DC.
While the meeting itself was private, the two presidents allowed media into the Oval Office to share their respective opening remarks.
In his statement, President Biden reiterated America’s firm commitment to Israel’s security and promised the US will ensure that Iran will never acquire nuclear weapons.

In a phone call on Monday, President Joe Biden invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to meet with him in the U.S.
The call, which Netanyahu’s office called “warm and long,” was the culmination of several weeks of diplomatic tensions, which included Biden’s sharp criticism of Netanyahu’s coalition during a July 7 CNN interview with Fareed Zakaria.
But Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told JNS that Netanyahu should be cautious about accepting Biden’s invitation.
Biden’s team has a “schizophrenic relationship with the Jewish state,” Rubin said. “Coming to Washington might mean being a stage prop for prominent Democrats to lecture and embarrass Netanyahu.” (Read more)

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday played a video for House Republicans that shows President Biden denying any wrongdoing related to his family’s business dealings, one day before a whistleblower is expected to tell Congress that the investigation into Hunter Biden was politicized.
The video, obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital, shows a timeline of Biden defending his family’s actions. But it ends with IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley claiming the IRS probe he was part of was prevented from taking steps “that could have led us to President Biden.”
Shapley and one other whistleblower are expected to claim on Wednesday at the House Oversight and Accountability Committee that the Justice Department interfered in the IRS investigation of Hunter Biden and his business dealings. 2. Rand Paul says he's confirmed Fauci has government-funded security detail amid alleged retirement - Washington Examiner
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) confirmed former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci is receiving government-funded security detail despite his alleged retirement.
While appearing on Jesse Watters Primetime on Monday, Paul said Health and Human Services admitted that the United States Marshals Service is paying for Fauci’s security detail but that HHS is reimbursing it.
“We asked HHS early in the summer — we said, 'Is he still working, and does he have this limo, and does he have a driver, and does he have a security detail?' Well, HHS actually came back to us and said they haven’t been paying for it since January,” Paul said.
“But then, we discovered that Fox did a Freedom of Information Act, and a judge forced them to say that while HHS wasn’t directly funding it, the U.S. Marshals were funding it. 3. U.S. soldier detained by North Korea after crossing DMZ border checkpoint - DML News
An American soldier has been detained in North Korea on Tuesday after crossing the Military Demarcation Line, a senior U.S. official tells Fox News. The U.N. Command earlier said that a U.S. national on a tour to the joint security area between North and South Korea crossed the Military Demarcation Line without authorization and is now believed to be in detained in North Korea.
“A U.S. National on a JSA orientation tour crossed, without authorization, the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK),” the peacekeeping force said in a tweet. “We believe he is currently in DPRK custody and are working with our Korean People’s Army counterparts to resolve this incident.” (Read more)

Vice President Kamala Harris claimed on Sunday that gun violence is the leading cause of death for children.
False. Numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show firearm-related deaths for children aged 0-17 was 2,281 in 2020, while the number of motor vehicle deaths for the same ages was 2,503.
Moreover, according to CDC numbers, children are are 27 times more likely to die an accidental car death than an accidental gun death and unintentional suffocation deaths are 10 times higher among children than accidental gun deaths. The founding co-chair of No Labels says it’s not a done deal that the centrist group will sport a bipartisan, third-party presidential ticket, if President Biden and former President Donald Trump are the major party nominees in the 2024 election.
“We haven’t decided to run a ticket. It’s not even clear that if it ends up being Trump and Biden, as it looks like it will now, that we’ll do that,” former Sen. 6. Georgia Supreme Court rejects Trump request to block grand jury report - Washington Examiner
The Georgia Supreme Court unanimously rejected former President Donald Trump's bid to quash a grand jury report that recommends people be indicted. Trump was also seeking to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the 2020 election inquiry. In its ruling, the court said Trump's legal team had failed to present “extraordinary circumstances” that warranted its intervention in quashing the grand jury report.
It added that regarding Willis, Trump “has not presented in his original petition either the facts or the law” necessary to warrant her disqualification.
The dismissal comes just weeks before Willis is expected to hand down criminal indictments in her investigation regarding alleged election interference by Trump and his team around the 2020 election. Trump's bid to block the report was seen as a long shot and was likely his last chance to stop or delay the indictments. (Read more)

7. Homeless crisis deepens, engulfs Dem-run city in chaos - DML News
The homeless crisis devastating Los Angeles appears to be only worsening as Mayor Karen Bass signed an updated emergency declaration giving her more extensive authority to tackle what she described as an “issue of life and death.”
Bass, a Democrat, last week signed an updated declaration of a state of emergency on homelessness, giving her additional powers to expedite the process of building more housing, call for the emergency service of city employees, and coordinate citywide planning to respond to the homeless crisis.
“It’s no secret that Los Angeles is facing an emergency when it comes to homelessness,” Bass said in a statement, “This is an issue of life and death for the thousands of people who are living in tents and cars. That’s why I signed an updated declaration of emergency and have continued to lock arms with the City Council to maintain our momentum toward confronting homelessness and building more affordable housing.” (Read more)

8. US orders deployment of Navy fighter jets to Middle East in response to Iranian aggression - Just The News
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered F-35 and F-16 fighter jets deployed to the Middle East, as well as the destroyer USS Thomas Hudner, in response to Iranian activities in the Strait of Hormuz. “In response to a number of recent alarming events in the Strait of Hormuz, the Secretary of Defense has ordered the deployment of the destroyer USS Thomas Hudner, F-35 fighters and F-16 fighters to the US Central Command Area of Responsibility to defend US interests and safeguard freedom of navigation in the region,” Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said Monday.
The deployments come after two incidents earlier this month in which Iranian Navy ships attempted to seize merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. The U.S. Navy intervened in both incidents on July 5. In one instance, in which an Iranian vessel was approaching the Richmond Voyager oil tanker, Iranian personnel opened fire on the tanker and hit the ship near the crew’s living spaces. “In light of this continuing threat, and in coordination with our partners and allies, the department is increasing our presence and ability to monitor the straight and surrounding waters,” Singh said." The ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee told MSNBC’s “All In” that Donald Trump’s only purpose for being president was to use the position as a “moneymaking operation.” On July 11, Jamie Raskin (D-MD) explained that Republican attacks on Joe Biden were to distract from Trump converting the presidency into an instrument of profit maximization for himself and his family and he wants to keep this grift going.” Raskin claimed, “So there’s gotta be an effort to bring down Joe Biden by putting him in the same category which is ridiculous and it is not convincing to the American people.” In other words, Raskin and the Democrats are saying Trump did what Biden is being accused of doing.
Raskin said that Democrats are “still in the thick of this fight to defend American democracy and democratic institutions against the autocrats and the theocrats and the kleptocrats like Donald Trump.” In politics, whenever someone accuses an opponent of doing something without any evidence, it is generally a sure bet that the accuser is doing exactly what he is accusing. In this case, Biden is proven to have used his position as Vice President, and quite possibly President, to enrich himself and his family through influence peddling. It is proven in emails and voice recordings documenting Biden’s son, Hunter, shaking down communist Chinese businessmen for millions of dollars. There are also bribery allegations and many others. Death Valley, hottest place on Earth, hits near-record high as blistering heat wave continues

Death Valley, Calif. — Long the hottest place on Earth, Death Valley put a sizzling exclamation point Sunday on a record warm summer that's baking nearly the entire globe by flirting with some of the hottest temperatures ever recorded, meteorologists said.
In Buckeye, Ariz., the heat apparently claimed a life Sunday. Police there say an elderly man was found dead in the desert after going for a bike ride. He had to walk when the bike got a flat tire, his wife told authorities. His death appeared heat-related, police said, but the medical examiner was going to determine what killed him.
Some 83 million people in the U.S. were under heat warnings or advisories Monday, CBS News weather producer David Parkinson said. "The nexus of record heat has shifted just a bit east (from California) to Arizona, New Mexico and Texas," he said.
Parkinson predicts 20 heat-related records will be set Monday in six states with the same number of records and states setting new marks Turesday.
Temperatures in Death Valley, which runs along part of central California's border with Nevada, reached 125.6 degrees Fahrenheit Sunday at the aptly named Furnace Creek, the National Weather Service said. Read More

The maternity department at Shaare Zedek Medical Center is the busiest in Israel, handling more than 22,000 births every year at its main and satellite hospitals in Jerusalem. Yet even here, the arrival of seven pairs of twins – that’s 14 babies, all doing well – in a single 24-hour period between July 12 and 13 was a noteworthy event. A hospital spokesman told ISRAEL21c that this represents a new record for the medical center. “In recent recorded memory, the previous high was five [sets of twins in one day],” he said.
The birth mothers included Jewish and Arab women from Jerusalem and beyond. One of the moms, Ma’ayan Luzon Peretz, said she’d come “from afar” to deliver her “two sweeties” because she’d had a previous positive experience giving birth at Shaare Zedek. She arrived for the big occasion in style, with the nails of one hand polished blue and the nails of the other pink, in honor of the son and daughter she was soon to deliver with her husband at her side. Another mother told reporters that she had waited 12 years for her first child, and now, three years later, was excited to add a pair of twins to the family she and her husband had yearned for so long to build. In June 2022, ISRAEL21c reported that identical twins Yael Yishai and Avital Segel gave birth to baby boys on the same day at Shaarei Zedek.
