US Supreme Court Won’t Block Trump’s Sentencing and Gag Order in New York Case

The U.S. Supreme Court on Aug. 5 rejected a bid by the state of Missouri to delay former President Donald Trump’s sentencing date for his New York felony conviction until after the November election.

The high court, in a one-paragraph and unsigned order, also left intact a gag order that was imposed by the judge in the case. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito indicated that they would have heard the case.

Missouri’s Republican attorney general filed a petition weeks ago to the high court arguing that the New York case infringed on the rights of voters and electors in his state ahead of the election. Trump is the Republican Party’s nominee for president in the general election.

In May, a jury found the former president guilty of falsifying business records to cover up a $130,000 payment at the end of the 2016 election. Prosecutors said the payment was intended to bolster his presidential campaign during that year.

Weeks before that, Judge Juan Merchan imposed a gag order that blocked Trump from publicly commenting on witnesses, court staff, members of the jury, and other individuals connected with the trial, other than Merchan himself and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who brought the case.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey wrote in his lawsuit that he believes that the case against Trump is an attack on the democratic process ahead of the 2024 election and that it was brought to smear the former president. (Fox News) Read more.

- Lord God, we lift up the highest court in our land to You, asking that You would move on every single heart to do Your will, and what’s best for the American public. We come against all bribes, lies, and deceit to try and influence the court's decisions, in Jesus name. We want our country back, and we continue to stand in faith that the morals and values this country was founded upon will continue to prevail, and that truth would win out in Jesus name, amen!

$6.4 Trillion Stock Wipeout Has Traders Fearing ‘Great Unwind’ Is Just Starting
(Bloomberg) -- The numbers flashing on trading screens on Monday were shocking even to market veterans.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei was down 12%. In Seoul, the Kospi sank 9%. And when the opening bell rang in New York, the Nasdaq plunged 6% in seconds. Cryptocurrencies sank; the VIX, a gauge of stock market volatility, skyrocketed; and investors piled into Treasury bonds, the safest asset of them all.

Whether Monday’s wild gyrations mark the final bang of a global selloff that started to build last week or signal the beginning of a protracted slump is impossible to know. On Tuesday, some of the worst-hit markets rebounded with key gauges in Japan soaring more than 10%, though few were saying a bottom had been reached.

One thing is clear: the pillars that had underpinned financial-market gains for years — a series of key assumptions that investors across the world were banking on — have been shaken. They look, in hindsight, a bit naïve: the US economy is unstoppable; artificial intelligence will quickly revolutionize business everywhere; Japan will never hike interest rates — or not enough to really matter.

Rapid-fire, evidence poured in over the past couple weeks that undermined each of them. The July jobs report was feeble in the US. So too were Big Tech’s AI-driven quarterly earnings. And the Bank of Japan hiked rates for the second time this year. (Bloomberg) Read more here.

Trump camp says Harris-Walz 'dangerously liberal' ticket is 'every American's nightmare'
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called Trump, Vance 'weird people' last week

The Trump campaign blasted Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, as a "dangerously liberal extremist," while warning that their vision for the country is "every Americans’ nightmare."

Waltz was tapped as Harris’ vice presidential pick Tuesday morning. The 60-year-old is a former congressman and is in his second term as the governor of Minnesota – a state that Democrats have reliably won in presidential elections for decades but that the Trump campaign has aimed at flipping this cycle.

Recently, Walz attacked former President Trump and his running mate JD Vance as "weird," a viral insult the Harris campaign has embraced.

The Trump campaign, though, blasted Walz for his liberal policies and views, which they say complement Harris perfectly. (Read more)

FOCUS ON ISRAEL

1. UN probe finds 9 UNRWA employees ‘may have’ been involved in October 7 attack - CNN

A United Nations investigation has found that nine employees from its main agency for Palestinian humanitarian relief, UNWRA, “may have” been involved in the October 7 attack and no longer work at the agency. UNRWA has 14,000 staff members in Gaza.

The investigation was launched in January after Israel accused some UNRWA employees of participating in the attack that left 1,200 people in Israel dead. UN investigators were not able to speak with the accused, though some accused responded to written questions.

Some on the nine were fired in January, when Israel made its allegations. Others were fired after new assertions were made this spring, Juliette Touma, communications director for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), told CNN. (Read more)

- Thank You Father that there have been some consequences for those who were found to have participated in the October 7th massacre in Israel.  We call for UNRWA to be dismantled or brought under severe restrictions and observation by neutral parties, in Jesus name.  We pray that this organization is never again able to sponsor, protect, support terror organizations in the name of "relief", in Jesus name.

- "Then the Lord will be zealous for His land, And pity His people."  (Joel 2:18)

2. ‘Dangerous escalation’ – 7 US soldiers wounded in missile attack - World Israel News

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant shortly after a missile attack on a U.S. Air Force base in Iraq wounded at east seven servicemen, calling the assault a “dangerous escalation” amid rising tensions in the region. According to a Reuters report, at least two Katyusha rockets were fired on the Al Asad base in the early hours of Tuesday morning, seriously wounding at least one.

While no group officially took responsibility for the attack overnight Monday, similar assaults have been carried out by Iran’s proxy militias in the past. Washington is operating under the assumption that the attack was ordered by the Islamic Republic. “Secretary Austin and Minister Gallant agreed that today’s Iran-aligned militia attack on U.S. forcesstationed at Al-Asad Airbase in western Iraq marked a dangerous escalation and demonstrated Iran’s destabilizing role in the region,” read a statement from the Pentagon.

During the call, the summary said, Austin reiterated to Gallant the “unwavering U.S. commitment to Israel’s security in the face of threats from Iran, Lebanese Hizballah, and other Iran-aligned militia groups.” Israel is girding for an expected retaliatory strike by Iran, after the assassination of Hamas politburo head Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. - Abba, first and foremost we speak healing over every injured soldier, in Jesus name.  We pray for the Spirit of the Living God to surround them and all soldiers in the region fighting for righteousness.  We pray for wisdom and effective defensive resources to protect all people vulnerable to attack from the enemy, in Jesus name.

- "Therefore submit to God, Resist the devil and he will flee from you."  (James 4:7)

3. U.S. Embassy issues urgent security alert, warns citizens to flee ahead of 'emergency situations' - WND

The U.S. embassy in Lebanon issued a warning to American citizens on Saturday to leave the country ahead of possible "emergency situations." The security alert recommended U.S. citizens in Lebanon make plans to leave or prepare to "shelter in place for an extended period of time." The alert comes as the country anticipates a retaliation effort from Israel following a missile attack from Lebanese-based Hezbollah terrorists that killed 12 children on July 27.

"We encourage those who wish to depart Lebanon to book any ticket available to them, even if that flight does not depart immediately or does not follow their first-choice route," the embassy alert reads. "We recommend that U.S. citizens who choose not to depart Lebanon prepare contingency plans for emergency situations and be prepared to shelter in place for an extended period of time."

Several airlines have suspended or canceled flights to the country, however commercial options are still available, according to the alert. (Read more)

- Father, we pray for all citizens who are in the field where conflict may erupt at any moment in time.  We ask that You grant them wisdom to know when to leave and protect them as they travel and prepare for the worst scenarios.  May they be kept close to You and fulfill their assignment in the country to which You've sent them, in Jesus name.

- "Then He said to His disciples, 'Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.  Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.'"  (Luke 12:22-23)

4. IDF confirms last Israeli missing since Oct. 7 was murdered by Hamas - JNS

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Tuesday that it had confirmed the death of Bilha Yinon, 76, nearly 10 months to the day after she went missing during the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks on her hometown of Netiv HaAsara.

“IDF representatives officially informed the family of Bilha Yinon, of blessed memory, that she is no longer alive,” the military stated. “Bilha Yinon is the last person to be identified of those missing since Oct. 7.”

The IDF said Yinon’s death was established by a committee of experts that also included representatives of the Israel Police, the Health Ministry and the Tel Aviv-based National Institute of Forensic Medicine, working in cooperation with Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef. (Read more)

The Daily Jot

Protectors of the Republic

The Daily Jot, Bill Wilson, August 6, 2024

We have seen a lot of political finger pointing recently about who is an existential threat to American democracy. Conservatives know that liberal Democrats seek larger, more powerful government in the socialist form. Conservatives generally prefer limited representative government. We have seen through lawfare being used against those who disagree with the Democrats that the laws are what those in control interpret them to be. Conservatives want the rule of law established and unchanged, except by legislative action. In both cases, Republicans are saying that Democrats want to end democracy and Democrats are saying Republicans are a threat to democracy—especially their brand of it.

After being imprisoned and warned by the high priests (the governing body of the Jews) to not conduct ministry in the name of Jesus, Peter and the apostles responded in Acts 5:29, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” In developing the governing principles over the children of Israel, Jethro advised Moses in Exodus 18:21, “…provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them (the people)…” This is the basis of American government the Founders used. There are many justifications of civic responsibility in the Bible, but are Christians using them? The foundational social contract from which our Republic was derived is that there are inalienable rights endowed by the Creator and that government is formed to protect those rights. Read More

Park Fire grows to more than 400,000 acres, now 4th-largest in California history
As of Friday, 94 large wildfires raged across multiple states, and 28 had evacuation orders, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

The fourth-largest wildfire in California’s history has grown to 400,956 acres, destroying 564 structures and damaging 50 as of Saturday morning, according to an update from Cal Fire.

“The Park Fire has been extremely active over the last 24 hours,” Cal Fire said. “Hot and dry weather has reduced moisture levels in vegetation across the fire area. Atmospheric instability has caused the fire to remain active, even during the overnight hours.”

The Park Fire is burning in Butte, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama counties and is 27% contained, according to the update.

It surpasses the SCU Lightning Complex which burned in the greater Bay Area and Northern San Joaquin Valley regions in August 2020, destroying 225 structures.

“Crews are making good progress building containment lines. However, firefighters are still actively engaging in fire suppression to an area spanning 175-miles,” the update read.

“Hot temperatures are expected through the weekend and into Sunday, increasing the chance for active fire behavior and long-range spotting,” it said.

As of Friday, 94 large wildfires raged across multiple states, and 28 had evacuation orders, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Fires are also burning in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Utah, Montana, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming and Nevada. Read More

NFL Hall of Fame Inductee Uses Acceptance Speech to Share Gospel Message
Randy Gradishar — the latest inductee into the NFL Hall of Fame — used his acceptance speech Saturday to succinctly and powerfully share the Gospel with those listening. The Ohio native earned his acclaim as a linebacker for the Denver Broncos in the 1970s, when he was part of the so-called “Orange Crush” defense team. At one point in his speech, Gradishar heaped praise on his wife and his pastor for being his “key prayer warriors.” But it was former NFL running back Archie Griffin, with whom he attended Ohio State University, that he credited with extending the “best invitation I ever had,” which was to join him for a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Bible study on campus. Gradishar said, despite growing up in church, he never sat through a Gospel presentation — until attending that FCA meeting, where the message of salvation was explained to him. “At age 22,” he told Griffin from the platform, “I received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.” (Read More and Watch Video Here!) Source: FaithNewsWire

- Abba, we praise You for placing Christians in places of prominence to proclaim Christ to the world! We also celebrate the impact that FCA ministry is having upon athletes at college campuses. In the Name of Jesus, we declare that the truths of the gospel spoken by recent NFL Hall inductee, Randy Gradishar, will bring a new thirst for knowing Christ and His Word into the hearts of those You are calling. May his message spread far and wide to bring in a harvest of surrendered hearts for Christ! In the Blood and Power of Yeshua- Amen and Amen.
