Polish leader warns of 'prewar era,' urges European nations to invest in defense
|
|
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged European nations to step up investment in their defense, saying the continent isn't ready for the current " prewar era."
Tusk made the remarks during a recent interview with various European newspapers.
"I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept from the past," he said before referring to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "It’s real and it started over two years ago."
Russia has intensified airstrikes against its neighbor. Recently, Russian missiles briefly breached Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine. That prompted Warsaw to put its forces on heightened readiness.
Moscow has escalated its attacks in recent days, launching several missile barrages on the capital, Kyiv, and hitting energy infrastructure across the country in apparent retaliation for recent Ukrainian aerial attacks on the Russian border region of Belgorod.
On Friday, Italian news agency AGI reported that Italian fighter jets at a Polish military base in Malbork intercepted two Russian spy aircraft in the Baltic Sea. The Russian aircraft were not authorized to be in NATO airspace, the report said. (Fox News) Read more

Baltimore Disaster Adds Urgency to Calls for US Maritime Policy Reform, Port Investment
|

Growing chorus say Biden’s $20 billion ports plan needs big boost to reverse decades of infrastructure neglect that now imperils commerce, national security.

President Joe Biden, in an executive order this February, directed $20 billion in allocations from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill (BIL) into a five-year grant program dedicated to modernizing America’s 361 commercial ports.
The money is welcome but not nearly enough to overcome decades of neglect in comprehensive federal port investment and a half-century absence—some say abdication—by successive administrations and Congresses in sustaining a cohesive national maritime policy, a growing chorus of critics contend.
“If you talk to anyone in the ports, they are extremely excited about this. It’s more money than they’ve received in decades,” said Capt. John Konrad, founder and CEO gCaptain.com, a maritime commerce news and analysis site.
“But if you put it in context of a $1.2 trillion infrastructure” package approved under the 2021 BIL and 2022’s Inflation Reduction Act, “it’s less than 1 percent. In that context, it’s not a lot of money,” he told The Epoch Times.
With the nation’s ninth-busiest commercial port sitting idle since the Singapore-flagged 95,000-ton Dali knocked down Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, there’s added intensity to years-long calls to upgrade ports to safely accommodate megaship container carriers. Only a handful of U.S. ports can, and improvements are needed to buttress supply chains that generate $5.4 trillion in annual domestic economic activity.
That renewed emphasis on federal port investment is certain to surface when the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee’s Coast Guard & Maritime Transportation and Homeland Security subcommittees convene a joint field hearing at the Port of Miami on April 5. (Read more)

Federal Agency: Tens of Millions Face Severe Weather From Texas to Virginia
|
|
Tens of millions of Americans will face severe weather, including storms, tornadoes, and hail, in a multi-day outbreak beginning this week, according to federal and private forecasters.
Generally, the first week of April marks the start of the most active three months of tornadoes in the United States. Tornadoes are expected to hit multiple states, including the middle part of the Mississippi Valley and the southern Plains states, said the National Weather Service.
The agency said it “issued an enhanced risk” for severe thunderstorms for portions of those areas until Tuesday morning.
“The hazards associated with these thunderstorms are frequent lightning, severe thunderstorm wind gusts, hail, and a few tornadoes. Besides, there is an increased threat of EF2 to EF5 tornados over parts of the Southern Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley,” the agency advised on Monday morning.
In the mid-Atlantic states, rain, thunderstorms, and similar impacts will develop Monday, it said.
According to a forecast issued by the agency’s Storm Prediction Center, northeastern Texas, northwestern Arkansas, most of Missouri, the southern half of Illinois, a small sliver of northwestern Tennessee, southern Indiana, and a small section of southwestern Ohio are all under an ‘enhanced’ severe weather risk for Monday. 1. Gallant: IDF will ‘soon address’ last Hamas brigade in Rafah - JNS
The Israel Defense Forces will soon attack the last Hamas terror brigade in the Gaza Strip’s southernmost city of Rafah, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday.
Gallant said Hamas has ceased to function as a terrorist group in “most parts” of Gaza. “Their commanders are hiding in tunnels, they have lost command and control capabilities, the battalion frameworks in most parts of the Strip have ceased to function.
“The Hamas brigade in Rafah, however, is still standing, with its four battalions. We will address this soon,” said Gallant, according to a Defense Ministry readout shared with the press.
The ministry said Gallant provided committee members with a briefing focused on “the IDF’s progress in fighting and dismantling Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the various efforts to ensure the return of the hostages held by Hamas, and the IDF’s counterterrorism operations.” (Read more)

2. Israel acknowledges killing 7 aid charity workers in ‘tragic, unintentional’ airstrike - Times of Israel
Facing searing criticism on Tuesday, Israel acknowledged mistakenly carrying out an airstrike that killed seven staff members of a US-based charity group who were unloading food brought by sea to the war-torn Gaza Strip.
The group World Central Kitchen said it was pausing operations after a “targeted Israeli strike” at around midnight between Monday and Tuesday killed three British and four other staffers — an Australian, a Palestinian, a Pole and a US-Canadian.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged a “tragic” and “unintentional” incident and vowed to “do everything” to prevent a recurrence. (Read more)

3. Hamas has ceased to function in most of Gaza, says Israeli defense chief - World Israel News
The Hamas terrorist organization has lost its capacity to operate as a military fighting force in most of the Gaza Strip, Israel’s defense chief said Tuesday, while warning that the group remains a viable force inside the border city of Rafah.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant (Likud) addressed a hearing of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Tuesday, briefing lawmakers on the status of the war, and the IDF’s ongoing efforts to return hostages taken by Hamas and other Gaza terror groups.
“Military pressure was and remains the main and most significant element in ensuring the return of the hostages,” Gallant said.
“The advanced stage we have reached in dismantling Hamas and the information that we have gained from terrorists, empower us at the negotiation table and enable us to make difficult decisions. I am committed to returning all the hostages to their homes.” (Read more)

4. Spain to recognize Palestinian statehood by July, its PM says - Times of Israel
Spain will recognize Palestinian statehood by July, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told journalists during a Middle East tour, according to several reports published on Tuesday in Spanish media.
State news agency EFE and newspapers El Pais and La Vanguardia cited Sanchez as making the informal remarks to the traveling press corps late on Monday in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on the first day of visits to Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
According to the reports, Sanchez said he expected events to unfold in the conflict ahead of the European Parliament elections in early June and highlighted ongoing debates at the United Nations. (Read more)

5. Violent clashes near PM's home as protesters escalate effort to secure hostage deal - Israel Hayom
Tensions boiled over in Jerusalem Tuesday night as a protest over Israelis captured in Gaza quickly descended into chaos and violence. What began as a rally outside the Knesset calling for the return of captive Israelis morphed into a fiery march to the Prime Minister's Residence and ultimately devolved into pitched battles between protesters and police officers on horseback. Five were arrested and a police officer was injured.
The dramatic events kicked off when Einav Zangauker mother of captive Israeli Matan, took the stage and lashed out at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "You are the Pharaoh inflicting the plague of the first-born upon us," she exclaimed. "You've failed. The blood of 1,400 murdered Israelis is on your hands, and 240 have been abducted under your watch."
Zangauker accused Netanyahu of fostering Hamas' rise and vowed relentless protests until her son returned. "We will set this country ablaze, shake the earth. As long as my Matan has no day or night, neither will you." (Read more)

1. Chilling preliminary numbers released on March border data - DML News
The Biden administration has not yet released the official border apprehension numbers to the public for the month of March. However, Fox News reporter Bill Melugin has obtained preliminary internal data from Customs and Border Protection, and is exposing how the Biden administration is tweaking the numbers to make it appear the invasion is smaller than it actually is.
DHS is encouraging migrants from certain countries to use the “CBP One App” to schedule appointments to be processed into the country, instead of just walking across. They are then reporting these numbers separately.
“….data shows there were also approx. 51,900 encounters at CBP ports of entry in March, which includes releases into US via CBP One App. When added w/ Border Patrol’s numbers between ports of entry, that brings overall March southern border encounters to approx. 189,400, which would be the third highest March of overall encounters under Biden, behind FY’23, which was approx. 212,000.
CBP source tells me there were 20,000+ known gotaways recorded in March. Gotaways are not recorded in the above numbers.” (Read more)

2. Federal Appeals Court Deals Legal Blow To Trump Aide Currently Facing Prison Sentence - The Daily Caller
A federal appeals court dealt another legal blow to former Trump administration official Peter Navarro Monday, siding with a judge who threatened him with contempt of court.
Navarro recently began his four-month prison sentence after being convicted on contempt of Congress charges in September for failing to comply with a Jan. 6 committee subpoena. A federal judge separately threatened in February to hold him in contempt of court if he failed to turn over emails from his time in the Trump administration to the National Archives in a ruling the appeals court affirmed Monday.
“Navarro argues that the United States cannot use D.C.’s replevin statute because the [Presidential Records Act] itself has no express cause of action for the United States to seek the return of Presidential records,” the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals court wrote Monday. “Rather, in Navarro’s view, the United States’s only enforcement mechanism is to discipline current employees possessing Presidential records under Section 2209, a mechanism the United States cannot use against Navarro because he is no longer an employee. “These arguments are without merit under clear, longstanding precedent,” the panel continued. 3. Biden campaign announces it will target flipping Trump’s Florida - The Hill
President Biden’s reelection campaign announced Monday that it will aim to flip Florida, targeting the home of former President Trump.
Campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a memo that investing in Florida is part of the Biden campaign’s pathway to 270 electoral votes. Trump won the Sunshine State in 2020 with more than 51 percent, compared to Biden’s 48 percent.
“Make no mistake: Florida is not an easy state to win, but it is a winnable one for President Biden, especially given Trump’s weak, cash-strapped campaign, and serious vulnerabilities within his coalition,” she said.
Chavez Rodriguez noted that the Biden campaign hired three operatives to run the campaign in Florida and that the state was part of the fall and spring ad buys, which were $25 million and $30 million spends, respectively. She also outlined that the Biden campaign has been focused on Latino outreach, and Florida has a large Cuban, Venezuelan, and Puerto Rican population. (Read more)

4. Hunter Biden loses attempt to dismiss tax charges - The Hill
A federal judge in California ruled against Hunter Biden’s attempt to toss out his tax charges on Monday, letting the criminal case against the president’s son move forward.
The younger Biden faces three felony charges and six misdemeanor charges in connection to tax evasion, filing a false return and failing to pay taxes between 2016 and 2019. His attorneys argued last month that the case was politically motivated and tainted by two IRS agents who later became whistleblowers.
He filed eight separate motions to dismiss the charges, citing different legal rationale for each, all of which were denied. Judge Mark Scarsi determined that the case was not political, shutting down Biden’s main argument by noting that Biden’s attorneys did not provide evidence for the claim. (Read more)

5. Biden’s citizenship and immigration agency announces new gender option, - DML News
The Biden administration’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced in a press release Monday that they will now have a third gender option for people applying for U.S. citizenship. People can now put an “X” in the box for “Another Gender Identity” instead of male or female on their application, and no supporting documentation is required.
This comes just one day after Joe Biden’s controversial proclamation celebrating “Transgender Day of Visibility.” Below are excerpts from the USCIS press release:
We have revised Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, to provide a third gender option, “X,” defined as “Another Gender Identity.” We are also updating guidance in the USCIS Policy Manual accordingly to account for this form revision and other forthcoming form revisions that will add a third gender option; see the Policy Alert (PDF, 344.77 KB). The 04/01/24 edition of Form N-400 will be the first USCIS form to include the X gender option. Applicants filing this edition of Form N-400 on or after April 1, 2024, will have X immediately available as a gender option on their form. (Read more)

6. Trump secures $175 million bond in New York civil fraud case - ABC News
Former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants have secured a $175 million bond in their New York civil fraud case, according to a court filing.
Trump secured the bond through Knight Specialty Insurance Company, which is owned by the privately-held Hankey Group, whose chairman told ABC News that he considers himself a Donald Trump supporter.
"This is what we do at Knight Insurance, and we're happy to be able to accommodate the ex-president in this situation," Don Hankey told ABC News. "I'd say it's more of a business decision, but I happen to be a supporter also."
Hankey said his company was initially involved in talks to underwrite the original $464 million bond in the case -- then when a New York appellate court last week reduced the amount to $175 million, Hankey said his company renewed their effort to underwrite the bond. "It was a relatively low number, and Donald Trump put up all the collateral in cash," Hankey said. (Read more)

7. Gold prices break all-time record as investors bet on Fed rate cuts - Washington Examiner
Gold prices set a new record on Monday as a recent inflation report buoyed optimism that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates in June.
Gold futures on Monday were trading at $2,275, up about $37 or just over 1.6% — the highest price since the contract’s creation in the 1970s. The upward momentum is in large part due to expectations that the Fed may cut interest rates soon, an action that would be expected to boost asset prices.
Driving some of the sentiment about rate cuts is Friday’s report on the personal consumption expenditures index, which is the Fed’s preferred gauge of inflation.
From January to February, inflation rose 0.3%, which was slightly less than expected. Core PCE inflation, a measure of inflation that strips out volatile energy and food prices, fell slightly to a 2.8% year-over-year rate. Following the release of the Friday report, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said it is “good” that the data “is pretty much in line with our expectations.” (Read more)

8. Former top general warns of 'inevitable' threats to US from Islamic State in wake of Moscow attack - ABC News
The Islamic State terror group has a "strong desire" to attack the U.S. and other foreign powers, the former head of U.S. Central Command warned on Sunday, calling it a threat that is only growing.
"We should believe them when they say that. They're going to try to do it," retired Gen. Frank McKenzie told ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz.
"I think the threat is growing," McKenzie continued, pointing to the dangers from affiliates like ISIS-K after the broader group took responsibility for a deadly attack in Moscow earlier this month.The group also said it was behind a mass bombing in Iran in January.
"It begun to grow as soon as we left Afghanistan, it took pressure off ISIS-K. So I think we should expect further attempts of this nature against the United States as well as our partners and other nations abroad," McKenzie said. "I think this is inevitable." McKenzie, who is also the author of the upcoming "The Melting Point," a book about leadership and his time commanding U.S. forces in the Middle East, which included the exit from Afghanistan, said that the U.S. maintains a large enough military presence in Iraq and Syria to counter extremists there. It's Better To Do Than To Wait

In reading the headlines of late–of war, of domestic unrest, of political calamity in America–many emails to The Daily Jot are falling into a couple of categories. First, some people say that they just want the rapture to come and get them out of here so they do not have to deal with the world. Others say that God is in control of everything so why worry about America and what she does. God knows the plan, it’s his plan and he will work it no matter what we do. While these comments are on the hearts and minds of many, and at least some of the doctrine rings true, they are both misguided and wrong minded. I know I will step on a lot of toes here, just know that I do so out of love that you might not be deceived.
As for the rapture. The scriptures over and over tell us that we will not know the time or the season when the Lord will return. Acts 1:7, Jesus says, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.” The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:1, “But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write to you.” Jesus said in Matthew 24:36, “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” Yes, we can discern the events of these days and know that we are close to the return of Jesus, but we are told to watch, pray, and be about his business. Iran vows revenge on Israel after Damascus embassy attack

DUBAI/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Iran said on Tuesday it would take revenge on Israel for an airstrike that killed two of its generals and five military advisers at its embassy compound in Damascus, raising the risk of further escalation in conflict in the Middle East.
The strike marked one of the most significant attacks yet on Iranian interests in Syria, where Israel has stepped up a long-running military campaign against Iran and groups it backs as the Gaza war has rippled around the Middle East.
Until now, Iran has avoided directly entering the fray, while supporting allies' attacks on Israeli and U.S. targets.
Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack, which destroyed a consular building adjacent to the main embassy complex in the upscale Mezzeh district on Monday night, killing seven members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).
But a senior Israeli government official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said those hit had "been behind many attacks on Israeli and American assets and had plans for additional attacks". Read More

Eclipse chasers are heading to Texas this spring to watch the moon completely block the sun for nearly five minutes. It's a phenomenon that one former scientist and Christian says is an opportunity ripe for evangelism.
A total solar eclipse is expected to take place on April 8 and the path of totality – the path where the moon's disk completely blocks the sun – will have millions flocking to the Lone Star State to experience the rare sight.
According to Forbes, anywhere from 270,000 to 1 million eclipse-chasing visitors from around the globe will join Texas' 13 million hill country residents.
"During totality, which here in Kerrville is going to be 4 minutes and 26 seconds at my house, the sky is going to be so dark, like night," Jeff Stone, an eclipse enthusiast, known as the "eclipse guy", and former NASA employee told Baptist Press.
"You'll be able to see stars. Granted, you won't see all the stars that you normally do, but you'll be able to see the bright stars. And, in the case of this one.… You'll also be able to see all the naked-eye planets, and I think that is going to be crazy cool," he added.
