Powerful earthquake rocks Taiwan, death toll rising, 800 injured
|
|
An earthquake rocked the entire island of Taiwan early Wednesday, killing nine, injuring hundreds, collapsing buildings in a southern city and sparking a brief tsunami warning for southern Japanese islands.
Taiwan's fire department said nine people have died in the mountainous, sparsely populated eastern county of Hualien, where the earthquake's epicenter was located. More than 800 people were injured in the incident and authorities lost contact with 50 people aboard four minibuses heading to a hotel in a national park.
At least 26 buildings have collapsed, with more than half in the city of Hualien. Nearly 80 people were trapped as rescue work continued, the government said. Fire authorities said about 60 of the people trapped were caught in a tunnel just north of Hualien city.
Video and images on social media showed buildings shaken off their foundations. A five-story building in lightly populated Hualien appeared heavily damaged, collapsing its first floor and leaving the rest leaning at a 45-degree angle.
In the capital, Taipei, tiles fell from older buildings and within some newer office complexes.
The U.S. Geological Survey put the 9.6 mile quake at a 7.4 magnitude, while Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency gave it a magnitude of 7.2. The effects of the earthquake were felt as far away as Kinmen, a Taiwanese-controlled island off the coast of China, said Wu Chien-fu, the head of Taiwan's earthquake monitoring bureau.
Multiple aftershocks were recorded, and the USGS said one of the subsequent quakes measured 6.5 magnitude and 7.8 miles deep. (Fox News) Read more. |

'Preparing strikes on Israeli embassies': The coming Iranian response to Syria strike

Israeli expert: 'Iran does not want direct confrontation with the US or with Israel that would involve the US...That could change.'

Hezi Simantov, a commentator and correspondent for Arab affairs of 'News 13', spoke Tuesday morning with Nissim Mashal and Anat Davidov on 103FM about the assassination of the senior Iranian Mohammad Reza Zahedi, commander of the Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon, and the expected consequences.
First of all, according to the reports from Syria and Iran, the Israeli Air Force allegedly attacked a building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, where several senior Iranian officials were located, among them Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who is actually the deputy commander of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards in Syria and Lebanon,” Simantov began.
“A very senior member of the Iranian hierarchy, he managed the entire operation of smuggling weapons from Syria to Lebanon. He was a very senior person who can be said to have given Israel a lot of headaches in the last twenty years for all his exploits in his involvement in terrorism. This is the most senior Iranian who has been eliminated so far since October 7 on Syrian soil," he continued.
"This is a severe and painful blow to the Iranian regime, a matter in which the Iranians are more inclined to take revenge against Israel. We have already eliminated several of their senior officials since October 7 on Syrian soil. This is the period when Iran wants to show that it is leading the axis of resistance. White House pressing Congress to approve F-15 sale to Israel despite criticism over airstrike accident
|

|
The White House is urging Congress to approve an $18 billion sale of F-15 fighter jets to Israel this week, even as the Biden administration has ramped up criticism of Israeli airstrikes.
Biden's State Department delivered notices to two Congressional committees asking them to begin the review process for the deal. In addition to selling more than 50 planes, the deal would also include munitions and training services, according to the New York Times.
U.S. officials, however, clarified to the outlet that the F-15s would not be delivered for at least another five years.
The deal comes as the Biden administration is growing increasingly critical of Israel's airstrike campaign in Gaza. White House officials have urged Israel to minimize civilian casualties, and while Israel insists it is doing all it can, dissatisfaction from the White House continues.
Those concerns surged earlier this week when an Israeli airstrike mistakenly killed seven aid workers in Gaza. The aid workers were there with the World Central Kitchen, an international group that works to address food crises.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby had harsh words regarding the Israeli strike during a White House press briefing on Tuesday, saying the administration was "outraged."
"We expect a broader investigation to be conducted and to be done so in a swift and comprehensive manner. We hope those findings will be made public and that there is appropriate accountability," Kirby told reporters. (Fox News) Read more here,

The upcoming election will likely be less about changing voters’ minds and more about rousing the faithful and getting them to the polls.
America’s students, who according to an analysis by Tufts University helped elect Biden in key swing states in 2020, could prove to be pivotal in this regard, both as targets and as foot soldiers in the party’s get-out-the-vote drives.
Meanwhile, a lawsuit currently moving through Wisconsin courts appears to provide a case study for how these campaigns translate into election wins for the Democratic Party.
In February, Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted that the government is paying college students to register voters.
“We have been doing work to promote voter participation for students. And, for example we … now allow students to get paid through Federal Work Study to register people and to be nonpartisan poll workers,” she said.
Ms. Harris said the Biden administration has been able “to charge federal agencies with doing the work that they rightly can do to inform the American people of their right to vote.”
Paying students to canvass is the latest component of an initiative originated under former President Barack Obama to increase student voting. Initially this was carried out in conjunction with private nonprofit organizations such as Civic Nation.
Founded with the support of President Obama, his wife, and Joe Biden in 2015, and led by former Obama staffers, Civic Nation now boasts a partnership with 1,700 colleges and universities and a reported budget of more than $16 million in 2020.
Its stated goal is “fighting for gender equity, social justice, and more,” and it leads the “All In Campus Democracy Challenge” that engages with university administrators to get them to sign up student voters.
All In runs school get-out-the-vote competitions in all 50 states. According to its website, it has partnered with 994 institutions and signed up more than 10 million students. As part of the “challenge,” schools agree to share student voting data.
Civic Nation receives much of its funding from a network of progressive charitable funds managed by Arabella Advisors, which oversees a network of nonprofit vehicles that finance left-wing political campaigns.
Under the Biden administration, however, the student get-out-the-vote campaign is now being run with federal funds, spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Education. (The Epoch Times) Read more here.

1. Gantz calls to set date for new elections around September - Israel National News
Chairman of the National Unity party, Minister Benny Gantz, spoke at a press conference about the ongoing the war in Gaza and the violent protest held on Tuesday night in Jerusalem. He also called to set an agreed upon date for elections.
At the opening of his announcement, Gantz said that, “In times of war, it is forbidden to enable any evasion from civil responsibilities and act insensitively towards the families of the hostages. It was a correct move to cancel the Knesset’s break.”
“Violence is not acceptable, and the police must also show restraint,” added Gantz.
Gantz then spoke to the families of the hostages, saying that, “I commiserate the fact that we have not yet been able to bring them home. I am ashamed to hear how some sectors of the public and its elected officials are behaving towards them. Netanyahu should address this and make sure that they are treated similarly. They deserve to know that the society is not against them,but supporting them.” (Read more)

2. Israel’s negotiating team departs Cairo after drafting new hostage deal proposal - Times of Israel
Israel’s negotiating team is on its way back from Cairo, the Prime Minister’s Office announces on behalf of the Mossad.
“During the negotiations, with the effective mediation of Egypt, the mediators put together an updated proposal for Hamas to address,” says the statement.
“Israel expects the mediators to act more forcefully against Hamas to move the negotiations forward toward a deal,” says the PMO.
The wording of the message, which praised Egypt and hinted that Qatar needs to do more, reflects frustration expressed to The Times of Israel by Israeli officials over Qatar’s unwillingness to press Hamas to move toward a compromise.
The mid-level negotiating team was made up of Mossad, Shin Bet, and IDF officials. (Read more)

3. Gallant: IDF expanding attacks on Hezbollah, readiness for war - JNS
The Israel Defense Forces is working to increase its readiness for a possible war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Wednesday.
He added that the military is expanding its operations against the Iran-backed terrorist organization.
“We do not wish for a war in Lebanon. I can tell you that such a war would be a difficult challenge for the State of Israel—however, it would be a catastrophe for Hezbollah and Lebanon,” Gallant told military and local political officials following a homefront preparedness drill in Haifa.
As part of Wednesday’s exercise, security services, local officials in Israel’s north and government ministries prepared for a quick transition from routine to emergency, according to a readout from Gallant’s office. (Read more)

4. Hamas chief rejects hostage deal compromise, demands Israel withdraw from Gaza - World Israel News
Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh on Wednesday ruled out a compromise with Israel for a hostage deal, doubling down on the terror group’s demands which Israel has already ruled out.
Speaking in a televised address marking Al-Quds Day, Ismail Haniyeh, chairman of the Hamas politburo in exile in Qatar, said the terror group would not agree to a hostage deal without the total withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the full return of Gazans to all portions of the Strip, an end to the security blockade of Gaza, expanded aid permitted into the coastal enclave, and the reconstruction of Gaza.
“We are committed to our demands: the permanent ceasefire, comprehensive and complete withdrawal of the enemy out of the Gaza Strip, the return of all displaced people to their homes, allowing all aid needed for our people in Gaza, rebuilding the Strip, lifting the blockade and achieving an honourable prisoner exchange deal,” Haniyeh said.
The terror chief accused Israel of continuing to “evade, resist” responding to Hamas’ demands. (Read more)

5. Fitch Removes Israel from Rating Watch Negative; Affirms IDR at A+ - Jewish Press
Fitch Ratings has removed Israel from Rating Watch Negative (RWN), and affirmed the Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at ‘A+’ with a Negative Outlook.
In contrast, Moody’s downgraded Israel’s credit rating to A2 this past February, a rating that is still five notches above investment grade, but kept the nation’s credit outlook at “negative”, meaning a further downgrade is possible.
The global credit rating agency cited material political and fiscal risks for the country from its war with Gaza’s Iranian-backed Hamas terrorist organization, and said the impact of the conflict raises political risk and weakens Israel’s executive and legislative institutions, and its fiscal strength for the foreseeable future. 1. Wisconsin governor vetoes transgender high school athletics ban - Associated Press
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers vetoed a bill Tuesday that was passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature to ban high school transgender athletes from competing on teams that align with their gender identity.
Evers had promised to veto the bill ever since it was introduced. Democrats did not have the votes to stop its passage in the Legislature. He vetoed it in the Capitol surrounded by Democratic lawmakers, transgender advocates, the mayor of Madison and others.
Republicans don’t have the votes needed to override the veto.
Evers said in his veto message that this type of legislation “harms LGBTQ Wisconsinites’ and kids’ mental health, emboldens anti-LGBTQ harassment, bullying, and violence, and threatens the safety and dignity of LGBTQ Wisconsinites, especially our LGBTQ kids.”
Evers vowed that as long as he is governor, he will not allow for “radical policies targeting LGBTQ individuals and families and threatening LGBTQ folks’ everyday lives and their ability to be safe, valued, supported, and welcome being who they are.” (Read more)

2. Florida Supreme Court allows 6-week abortion ban to take effect, but voters will have the final say - NBC News
In a pair of significant decisions Monday, the Florida Supreme Court upheld a 15-week ban on abortion in the state while also allowing a proposed amendment that would enshrine abortion protections in the state constitution to appear on the November ballot.
The conservative-leaning court's decision on the 15-week ban also means that a six-week abortion ban, with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the woman, that Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law last year will take effect.
But the bench's ruling to allow the constitutional amendment to appear on the ballot this fall means voters will have a chance in just seven months to undo those restrictions.
Republicans have made multiple moves over the nearly two years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade to restrict access to abortion. In 2022, DeSantis, a Republican, signed a 15-week abortion ban passed by the GOP-controlled Legislature that was almost immediately challenged in court. (Read more)

3. Largest US egg producer temporarily shutters facility after H5N1 virus found in chickens - Fox Business
The largest producer of fresh eggs in the United States says it has temporarily closed one of its facilities in Texas after highly pathogenic avian influenza, otherwise known as H5N1 bird flu, wiped out nearly two million birds.
Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. said one of its facilities in Parmer County "tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, resulting in depopulation of approximately 1.6 million laying hens and 337,000 pullets, or approximately 3.6% of the Company’s total flock as of March 2, 2024."
"Production at the facility has temporarily ceased as the Company follows the protocols prescribed by the USDA," it added, noting there is "no known risk related to HPAI associated with eggs that are currently in the market and no eggs have been recalled."
The development comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that a person in Texas tested positive for the bird flu. (Read more)

4. Biden administration cancels purchase for Strategic Petroleum Reserve, citing high prices - Washington Examiner
The Department of Energy said it has canceled its plans to purchase millions of barrels of oil to refill the depleted U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, as oil prices rise to a five-month high.
In canceling the SPR purchase, the Energy Department said it was “keeping the taxpayer’s interest at the forefront” of its buyback plan, which is to refill the depleted reserves so long as prices remain below $79 per barrel.
Prices for global benchmark Brent crude and U.S.-based West Texas Intermediate soared well higher Tuesday, with Brent prices nearing $90 per barrel and WTI climbing slightly above $85 per barrel, amid worries about supply from Russia and producers in the Middle East.
Energy Department officials first announced the Bayou Choctaw purchase last month, saying they would buy up to 3 million barrels of oil. (Read more)

5. China sends warplanes, boats around Taiwan following phone call between Xi and Biden - Fox News
Dozens of Chinese warplanes and multiple naval ships were reported around the island of Taiwan this week, the largest coordinated display this year. The coordinated display of military force by the People's Liberation Army around Taiwan followed a phone call between leaders of the People's Republic of China and the United States.
President Biden held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday – the first time the two have spoken since July 2022. The White House has yet to offer details about the call, but Biden and Xi were expected to discuss Taiwan, narcotics, artificial intelligence and China's support for Russia against Ukraine.
The White House described the conversation as merely a "check-in" between the two leaders. Biden has stated repeatedly in the past that the U.S. would intervene if China were to invade Taiwan, but the White House has walked back the statement each time. (Read more)

6. Mysterious fireballs seen streaking across California sky - Fox News
Skygazers in California were left stunned early Tuesday when they witnessed a series of bright fiery lights streaking across the clear night sky. Video shows the mysterious golden objects shooting across the sky in a straight line at around 1:30 a.m. in Moreno Valley, which is about 70 miles east of Los Angeles.
Many people on social media suspected it was debris from the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch the previous evening from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, which carried 22 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. Others opined it may be from the Chinese Shenzhou 15 Orbital Module rocket that was predicted to re-enter near Los Angeles at 1:45 a.m. local time.
Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist and satellite tracker, told Space.com he believes the debris was from the Chinese orbital module that launched three astronauts to the nation's Tiangong space station in November 2022. (Read more)

7. Statewide Emergency Declared in Indiana Ahead of Solar Eclipse - The Epoch Times
Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb issued a statewide emergency due to a large influx of visitors to his state to view the total solar eclipse on April 8.
The Republican official said that the number of visitors to Indiana may strain the state’s communications, transportation, and emergency response systems, warranting the need for the declaration. Indiana includes some of the best locations in the United States to see the eclipse, according to a map of the path of totality.
“The massive number of people viewing this event in our state may well stress and/or interfere with first responder and public safety communications and emergency response systems such that a technological or other emergency may occur,” Mr. Holcomb said in a statement last week, adding that the declaration was issued as a precaution to bring in emergency resources from other states.
Officials in other U.S. states have issued advisories or warnings ahead of the astronomical event. Authorities in Ohio’s Summit County, for example, advised residents to “stay home” due to traffic congestion by an expected influx of viewers, while officials from the Illinois Department of Transportation warned that crowd sizes could be massive in some areas. 8. Ties Emerge Between Embattled Biden Judicial Nominee Adeel Mangi and Domestic Terrorist - Free Beacon
Susan Rosenberg is one of the country's most notorious domestic terrorists. She landed on the FBI's "Most Wanted" list at age 29 and served in a women-led communist group that bombed the U.S. Senate chamber in 1983.
Mangi has already come under intense scrutiny over his links to the alliance, which has hailed convicted cop-killers, including Mumia Abu Jamal and Mutulu Shakur, as "freedom fighters." But the group's affiliation with Rosenberg, which has not been previously reported, underscores an affinity for domestic terrorists that could add to Mangi's woes. Republicans have rallied in opposition to Mangi, and two Democrats have said they'll vote against him. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D., Nev.) cited Mangi's links to the Alliance of Families for Justice as rationale for her opposition.
Mangi has downplayed his affiliation with the Alliance of Families for Justice and pleaded ignorance about some of its controversial activities. He said in a letter to senators last week that he does not recall meeting Boudin, the alliance's founding board member, though he did not deny knowing about her conviction for murdering police officers. In these days of tremendous technology advances, artificial intelligence, and 24-7 bombardment of media, it is very difficult to discern the truth from lies. And often a small bit of truth makes are far better lie. The news media, which at a time in the distant past, prided itself on getting the facts right and distinguishing between news reporting and editorializing, cannot be depended upon for truth. There is always a slant whether it’s the most far left mouthpiece of statism or the conservative voice of freedom. They write it from the content of their hearts with little consideration of what is fact and how it relates to truth. Remember Christ’s words in John 8:32, “the truth will make you free.” But what of it?
Truth these days is not so much knowing the Word of God and then knowing truth. Truth has become what is right in each individual’s eyes. You can read to someone the very documentation, the original documentation of an event and they will say, “I don’t believe that.” People believe what they want to believe and the truth matters very little as a little truth makes their belief stronger. Fact is defined as something that has actual existence. Truth is the body of real things, events and facts. Truth is, therefore, proving a fact. For example, a fact may be that a person is lying dead on a floor. The truth would encompass why he is dead on the floor. Did he die of natural causes, an accident, or foul play? Group of 60 ultra-faint stars orbiting the Milky Way could be new type of galaxy never seen before

A new satellite galaxy discovered orbiting the Milky Way is either an incredibly ancient, soon-to-fragment clump of stars or the most dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy ever found.
Astronomers have spotted the faintest and lightest satellite galaxy ever found: a minuscule, tight-knit group of stars trailing the Milky Way. The peculiar discovery could represent a new class of impossibly faint, dark-matter-dominated star systems that had eluded detection until now.
Tentatively named Ursa Major III/Unions 1 (UMa3/U1), the newfound star system resides in the constellation Ursa Major, about 30,000 light-years from the sun. It is the newest addition to our galaxy's assortment of at least 50 satellite galaxies. Even the smallest of these galaxies host thousands to billions of stars.
The newfound system, by contrast, has just a sprinkling of 60 stars. As such, its mass is just 16 times the mass of the sun, scientists reported in a new study. For comparison, the Milky Way's mass is about 1.5 trillion times that of our star, according to NASA.
