Democratic Party Gets $186 Million Boost in Effort to Take the House
|
|
House Majority PAC, a political action committee backing Democrats, will spend at least $186 million on federal races in 2024, according to the organization.
The PAC, registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) as the hybrid PAC HMP, announced its plans on April 7.
In a statement, HMP said the campaign will hit 58 different media markets. Most of the spending, $146 million, will go toward television, and the remainder will go toward digital ad placements.
The group called it an “initial round of reservations,” setting up the possibility of more spending later in the year. However, according to its announcement, HMP’s initial outlay of $186 million is much larger than the $102 million it spent in 2020.
“Through these historic television and digital reservations, House Majority PAC has made it clear that we are ready to do whatever it takes to flip the House and elect Hakeem Jeffries the next speaker,” HMP President Mike Smith said in the statement.
After a slew of resignations, the Democratic Party holds 213 seats in the lower chamber while the Republican Party holds 218. As of April 8, there are four empty chairs. (Epoch Times) Read more here.

Appeals Court Judge Rejects Trump Request to Postpone ‘Hush Money’ Trial as Attorneys Seek Change in Venue

The former president requested interim relief, or a stay, just one week before his first criminal case was set to go to trial in New York.

Attorneys for former President Donald Trump filed an appeal on April 8 and requested interim relief, or a stay, just one week before his first criminal case was set to go to trial in New York.
On the same day, a judge with the appellate division of the New York Supreme Court rejected the request to delay trial. Defense attorneys had argued during an emergency hearing that the trial should be postponed while they seek a change of venue.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is prosecuting President Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to an alleged “hush money” payment scheme to influence the 2016 elections. New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, presiding over the case, has criticized the defense more than once for what he described as attempts to delay the trial.
The defense has indeed filed a flurry of motions and pre-motion letters in the last days leading up to the trial, protesting a gag order and its expansion, citing changed circumstances that warrant the judge’s removal, and arguing a presidential immunity defense that will soon be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Defense lawyers have also argued that the case should not proceed under the heightened media coverage that the first-ever criminal trial of a former U.S. president is currently attracting and submitted survey results showing high awareness of the trial among New York County residents, arguing that the defense cannot seat an impartial jury in New York. Massive container ship loses power near NYC’s Verrazzano Bridge days after Baltimore Key Bridge disaster
|
|
A massive container ship lost propulsion power in the waters around New York City and was brought to a rest near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge Friday night — less than two weeks after failure on another massive cargo vessel caused it to smash into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The US Coast Guard confirmed that its Vessel Traffic Service received a report that the 89,000-ton M/V APL Qingdao lost propulsion about 8:30 p.m. as it traversed the Kill Van Kull — the shipping lane between Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey.
An image shared on X by John Konrad, CEO of maritime-focused news outlet gCaptain, shows the 1,100-foot APL Qingdao floating uncomfortably close to the span that connects Brooklyn and Staten Island.
In response to the power failure, three tugboats that were escorting the APL Qingdao guided the vessel until it regained propulsion a short time later.

1. Tehran flooding Judea and Samaria with weapons, Iranian officials tell NYT - JNS
As the Israel Defense Forces fight Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip, the Iranian regime continues to foment violence in Judea and Samaria by flooding the territory with weapons, The New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing officials in Washington, Jerusalem and Tehran.
Judea and Samaria saw a dramatic rise in terrorist attacks in 2023 compared to the previous year, with shootings reaching the highest level since the Second Intifada of 2000-05, according to Israeli military data.
The violence has continued to escalate since Hamas started a war with its murderous rampage across the northwestern Negev last year. Since Oct. 7, at least eight Israelis have been murdered in Judea and Samaria. (Read more)

2. Israel Warns the IDF Will Strike Deep in Iran in Response to An Attack by Tehran - Jewish Press
Israeli forces are training for the possibility of attacking Iran directly, according to a report by a Saudi news outlet.
Such an attack would be carried out if the Islamic Republic bombs the Jewish State, as it has implied it will do, in response to a recent airstrike in Damascus that eliminated seven Iranian military advisers, including two top generals responsible for the country’s military activities in Syria and Lebanon.
A Western official told the London-based Saudi Arabian “Elaph” news outlet on Tuesday that Israel will strike targets inside Iran, if Iran bombs sites in Israel. Specifically, Israel has threatened to respond twice as strong if the Jewish State is targeted in an attack by Iran. (Read more)

3. Netanyahu: ‘We will eliminate the Hamas battalions in Rafah’ - JNS
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Tuesday that the Hamas battalions in Rafah will be defeated amid questions about whether a full-scale invasion of Gaza’s southernmost city will take place.
“We will complete the elimination of Hamas’s battalions, including in Rafah. No force in the world will stop us…. After what [Hamas] has done, it will not do this again. Neither will it exist,” the premier said at a reception for IDF recruits at Tel Hashomer base in Ramat Gan.
The remarks come after earlier in the week the IDF announced the withdrawal of ground forces from southern Gaza after four months of fighting in Khan Yunis and six months of war, leaving only one battalion left in the Strip. (Read more)

4. Israel says it hit Syrian army post being used by Hezbollah - Times of Israel
The IDF says it carried out a strike against a Syrian Army position in southern Syria, near Israel’s border, which was identified as being used by Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
The IDF says it has intelligence indicating Hezbollah operatives used the Syrian Army site.
“The IDF holds the Syrian regime accountable for all activities which take place within its territory and will not allow for any attempted actions which could lead to the entrenchment of Hezbollah on the Syrian front,” the military says in a statement. (Read more)

5. Rare 6,000-year-old elephant ivory relic unearthed in southern Israel - World Israel News
An ivory vessel made of elephant tusk, dated to the Chalcolithic period, was uncovered in an Israel Antiquities Authority excavation near Beer Sheva in southern Israel.
The rare vessel, known in research as an “amphoriskos” (a small jar), attests to commercial relations between the land of Israel and Egypt roughly six thousand years ago.
This is the first time a Chalcolithic period ivory vessel has been found in our region.
The vessel was found shattered to pieces in 2020. Brought to the Israel Antiquities Authority laboratories, it was restored in a complicated conservation process. (Read more)

1. 25-Year NPR Veteran Cops To All The Biased Coverage Outlet Pushed During Trump Years - The Daily Caller
Veteran National Public Radio (NPR) editor Uri Berliner published an essay on Tuesday exposing the government-funded outlet’s alleged bias during former President Donald Trump’s presidency.
Berliner, who has been at NPR for 25 years, alleges in the essay published in The Free Press that the outlet was striving to take down Trump during his presidency by citing Russia-collusion allegations that were later debunked. He also asserts that all levels of the organization were aligned on the prioritization of race and identity, leading to a lack of “viewpoint diversity” and increase in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
“Persistent rumors that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia over the election became the catnip that drove reporting,” he wrote. “At NPR, we hitched our wagon to Trump’s most visible antagonist, Representative Adam Schiff.” Berliner also criticized the outlet’s managing editor for neglecting to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story during the 2020 presidential election. 2. UK's Cameron meets Trump ahead of push for more US Ukraine funding - Fox News
Former U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron met with former President Donald Trump in a surprise visit to Mar-a-Lago on Monday. Cameron, who now serves as the U.K. foreign secretary, is in the U.S. to urge lawmakers to back additional funding to Ukraine in its war against Russia and a spokesperson for the British government's Foreign Office described it as "standard practice" to meet with an opposition candidate, with Trump being the presumptive Republican nominee for this year’s presidential election.
It is unclear how the meeting went or what exactly was discussed. Trump has previously stated that he would end the war within 24 hours should he be reelected while he has also touted converting the cost of weapons transfers to Ukraine into a loan.
Cameron will meet Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday to discuss the $60 billion military aid package which he has held up for months, while the pair will also discuss the Israel-Gaza war. (Read more)

3. FBI arrests Idaho 18-year-old for 'violent plot' to attack churches on behalf of ISIS, Justice Department says - Fox News
The FBI has arrested an 18-year-old in Idaho after uncovering his "truly horrific" and "violent plot" to attack churches in Coeur d’Alene this past weekend on behalf of ISIS, the Justice Department says.
Alexander Mercurio is now facing a federal charge of attempting to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization after the FBI says he devised a plan to "incapacitate his father, restrain him using handcuffs, and steal his firearms to use for maximum casualties" in an attack he had been planning to carry out in the northern Idaho resort city on Sunday, April 7.
"The defendant allegedly pledged loyalty to ISIS and sought to attack people attending churches in Idaho, a truly horrific plan which was detected and thwarted by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force," FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement. “The Justice Department will continue to relentlessly pursue, disrupt, and hold accountable those who would commit acts of terrorism against the people and interests of the United States," added Attorney General Merrick Garland. 4. Filings Show Left-Wing Gen-Z PAC Blew More than $1M on Travel Expenses, Consultants, Spent Little on Candidates - Breitbart
Gun control activist David Hogg is living high on the hog thanks to the many donors cutting checks to his political action committee (PAC), Federal Election Commission (FEC) records show.
Hogg created a group in the aftermath of the 2022 midterm elections called Leaders We Deserve PAC, which states that its goal is to elect Generation Z politicians to offices throughout the country. He created the PAC with Kevin Lata, the campaign manager for Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL)—a Generation Z Democrat elected in 2022.
Since Hogg’s group came into fruition, much of the few million dollars raised has gone not to electing candidates or executing its stated mission but to luxurious expenses, such as travel bills, as well as political consultants and legal fees. In fact, the group, in 2023, only spent on a handful of candidates—four to be exact—one of whom was already serving in the U.S. Congress, Frost, and another who lost a race in a special election in Alabama. The vast majority of the group’s money, the FEC filings from 2023 show, did not go to helping candidates at all—and much of it went to other political consultants at various firms, as well as to Hogg and Lata, with a lavish travel budget to boot. 5. Hand sanitizer, aloe gel recalled over warnings it could cause comas or blindness - Fox Business
Several lots of hand sanitizer and aloe gel are being recalled for containing methanol, which can put consumers at risk for serious health issues, according to federal health officials.
The recall affects 40 lots of Aruba Aloe Hand Sanitizer Gel Alcohol 80% and Aruba Aloe Alcoholada Gel, which contains "alcohol denatured with methanol," according to a notice posted by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA warned in the recent recall that "substantial methanol exposure" can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness, as well as permanent damage to the central nervous system, or death. Customers are being told to stop using the products and to discard them. (Read more)

6. Letitia James to Begin Claiming Donald Trump's Properties: Lawyer - Newsweek
An insurance company will not be permitted to post a $175 million bond for Donald Trump while he appeals a fraud judgment, a former federal prosecutor has said. Eric Lisann was reacting to a separate comment by another lawyer, Dave Kingman, who wrote that Knight Specialty Insurance will not be able to post the bond for Trump.
Kingman wrote that, as a result, New York Attorney General Letitia James will be able to begin enforcement proceedings on Donald Trump's properties. A New York court has rejected Knight Specialty's paperwork and said it wanted to see more information on its financial backing. The company filed new paperwork on April 4. (Read more)

7. Germany sends first soldiers for permanent Lithuania force - DW News
The first group of German soldiers arrived in Lithuania on Monday as part of a new brigade that will be permanently stationed on NATO's eastern flank. The advance team of about 20 staff will begin setting up the base. They will eventually be joined by around 4,800 German soldiers.
The brigade, to be named Panzerbrigade 45, will be fully operational by 2027.
"This is the first time that we have permanently stationed such a unit outside Germany," German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at a farewell ceremony in Berlin on Monday.
"I know there is still a lot to do, including on site. The infrastructure has to be right, the barracks have to be there, the accommodation," Pistorius said. “There is still a lot to be done on the Lithuanian side," the minister added. "We will do everything we can to equip the brigade as it needs to be equipped from the outset." Responding to the deployment, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the German military presence in Lithuania would escalate tensions. (Read more)

8. Arizona Supreme Court Reinstates Civil War-Era Abortion Ban - Epoch TImes
A nearly two-year legal battle over abortion in Arizona ended on April 9 with the state Supreme Court’s ruling that a pre-statehood ban on most abortions is legally enforceable in the state.
The 1864 law bans all abortions in Arizona, save those performed to save the life of the mother.
The 4–2 ruling reverses a lower court’s opinion that a 15-week abortion limit passed in 2022 supersedes the older law’s abortion restrictions. The Arizona Court of Appeals had held that the two laws could be “harmonized,” allowing doctors to perform abortions up to 15 weeks, but also permitting the prosecution of non-physicians who perform abortions in the state. Drastic Change In US Policy Moves Prophecy Clock

President Joe Biden siding with Islamic terrorists by demanding an immediate ceasefire by Israel at the threat of withholding American support is a drastic sea change in US Middle East policy that moves the end time prophecy clock ahead. The Biden threat gives the Hamas terrorist organization and its allies supported by Iran an upper hand in negotiating any hostage release. Moreover, it signals to the terrorist enemies of Israel that terrorism works and propaganda about humanitarianism takes precedence over the stated mission of wiping Israel from the face of the earth. This is nothing short of an apocalyptic event and a very public demonstration of worldwide anti-Israel sentiment.
Biden had a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The White House released a statement which, in part read that Biden, “underscored that an immediate ceasefire is essential to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation and protect innocent civilians, and he urged the Prime Minister to empower his negotiators to conclude a deal without delay to bring the hostages home. The two leaders also discussed public Iranian threats against Israel and the Israeli people. President Biden made clear that the United States strongly supports Israel in the face of those threats.” The win for Hamas here is that Biden is demanding an Israeli ceasefire, without any demands on Hamas. Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations spoke out forcefully against the notion of Palestinian statehood during a U.N. Security council meeting on Monday, going so far as to suggest that the U.N. had backtracked on its original goal of preventing the spread of Nazi ideology by supporting Palestinian statehood.
While speaking in the General Assembly, Erdan held up a World War II-era photo of Haj Amin Al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, speaking with German Chancellor Adolf Hitler.
Al-Husseini, whom Erdan described as "one of the founding fathers of Palestinian nationalism," was an enthusiastic Nazi supporter whose anti-Semitism was well documented. The Grand Mufti had pleaded with Hitler for assistance in getting rid of the British Mandate and the Jewish immigrants coming to the Holy Land – requests that were ultimately turned down.
Erdan said the Palestinians’ goal of annihilating the Jews was clear long before the establishment of the U.N. or the State of Israel in the years following World War II.
"And from then until today, the root of this conflict has not changed. It is not a political conflict or about partitioning land," Erdan said. "It is solely about the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews."
Erdan accused the U.N. of committing itself to "reinforcing modern-day Nazi Jihadists [by] considering forcing the establishment of a Palestinian terror state."
"This won’t be a regular state – it will be a Palesti-Nazi state. An entity that achieved statehood despite being committed to terror and Israel’s annihilation. If Hitler was alive today, he would be singing the U.N.’s praises," he said. (Fox News) Read more

FISA reauthorization bill scheduled for vote Wednesday in GOP-led House
|

|
Conservative lawmakers and a group of Democrats have called for ending warrantless surveillance, which the bill up for a vote on Wednesday would not do in its current form.

|
A Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act reauthorization bill is scheduled for a House floor vote on Wednesday.
The bill, titled the Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act, would extend Section 702 of FISA, which "authorizes the targeted collection of foreign intelligence information from non-U.S. persons located abroad," according to the FBI.
The FBI has described it as an "indispensable tool" in the agency's efforts to "protect against national security threats."
According to the Brennan Center for Justice, the legislation is a reform bill in name only, since it doesn't require law enforcement to obtain a warrant prior to conducting a "U.S. person query" of information on a specific individual.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner, R-Ohio, predicts the bill will pass.
“I think it will," he said Sunday on CNN. "I think that those who mischaracterize this are small compared to those who understand that this goes to the heart of our ability to get intelligence. It allows us to be able to keep Americans safe. This is not a warrantless surveillance of Americans.” (Just the News) Read more here,

Trillions of cicadas to swarm U.S.; first double-brood emergence in 200 years
|
|
|
A rare double-emergence of cicada broods is about to swarm the eastern United States in the coming weeks, scientists say.
Brood 13, which emerges every 17 years, and Brood 19, which emerges every 13, will join together for the first time since 1803, when Thomas Jefferson was president.
Illinois will be ground zero for this historic emergence, which is expected to sweep through about a dozen other states.
Cicadas, known for their loud chirping and tendency to leave behind mounds of exoskeletons, tend to surface around April or May to reproduce before disappearing again.
There are 15 "periodical" cicada broods in the United States, three of which emerge every 13 years and the rest every 17.
The cicadas from Broods 13 and 19 are of a similar size, growing to about 1.4 inches, but other broods can double that and have up to an eight-inch wingspan.
Entomologist Meredith Shrader at Auburn University said central and northern Alabama can expect "millions and millions" of cicadas for about six to eight weeks.
"Everybody's getting really, really excited," Shrader told Al.com. "Some people are dreading it, but it'll be fun." Read More

All Eyes on the Sky as Millions of Americans Come Together and Marvel At Solar Eclipse

Millions of Americans greeted the solar eclipse Monday as it passed over the country from Texas to Maine. Eagle Pass, Texas was the first American city to witness the rare event as it began its journey across the country. More than 30 million Americans were in the path of the eclipse as it cut through 15 states and major cities including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Niagara Falls. In Cleveland, CBN's David Brody recorded the moments when the moon passed in front of the sun. "We're just in total darkness here, full totality and there's the total eclipse and you can barely see me because we're in the middle actually of full totality," Brody reported.
CBN correspondent Paul Petitte was on the ground in Ozark, Arkansas. "Arkansas was the second state the eclipse passed over going through Texas and going over both Dallas, Austin, and Fort Worth," he reported. Officials estimate more than half a million out-of-state visitors flocked to Arkansas for the eclipse. Many schools were closed and plenty of people were outside to witness this once-in-a-lifetime celestial spectacle. "It's not something you get to see every day and it was actually quite incredible like my husband said," said Oklahoma resident Nikki Rice. "You know, when you watch it on the news you really don't get a full perspective of it but the whole atmosphere here changed," she said. "You can see the corona, and it looks like a circle with a ring, just like flashing lights out of it and I thought that was really cool," said Claudia James of Colorado. "God is in control and He controlled the eclipse today and He controls me. And He loves all of us and I am glad I got to enjoy it with all the people here," remarked Arkansas resident Theresa White.
