Senate Narrowly Passes COVID relief bill after sleepless, tumultuous night
The Senate on Saturday narrowly passed President Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan following a marathon overnight session in a key vote that puts new stimulus checks and expanded unemployment checks one step closer to the pockets of the American public.
Following 27 hours of debate, delays and wrangling, Democrats pushed through the legislation in a party-line vote of 50-49. The legislation now heads back to the House for final approval before hitting Biden’s desk for his signature on what would be his first major legislative victory.
Democrats, who have the slimmest of majorities in the Senate, were united in passing the legislation that they say will help rescue the economy and end the coronavirus pandemic that has claimed more than 520,000 lives. "The people are hurting, and today we respond," Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said prior to the vote.
Republicans said the legislation is too big and bloated. "The Senate has never spent $2 trillion in a more haphazard way or through a less rigorous process," GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said before the vote. (Fox News) Read more.
Senate Passes $1.9 trillion COVID-19 aid bill with changes that infuriate House Democrats
The Senate passed a massive coronavirus aid spending bill Saturday after hours of debate on GOP amendments and a protracted fight among Democrats over unemployment benefits.
The $1.9 trillion legislation heads back to the House, where Speaker Nancy Pelosi must sell the measure to her liberal faction of Democrats who are likely to oppose the changes made in the Senate.
The bill passed 50 to 49, with one senator, Republican Dan Sullivan of Alaska, absent.
While the House passed the bill last week, Senate Democrats made significant changes to appease party centrists and adhere to Senate rules that allowed them to pass the bill without any Republican support. Democrats stripped out a provision that would have mandated a $15 minimum wage and agreed to reduce the monthly enhanced jobless pay from $400 to $300.
The changes have angered the party’s liberal base, including those in the House Democratic Caucus, so it will be up to both Pelosi and President Biden to help usher through the Senate version before March 14, when federal unemployment benefits are set to expire. House Democrats control a very narrow majority and can afford to lose only a handful of votes in their own caucus since no GOP lawmakers are likely to vote for it. (Washington Examiner)Read more.
McConnell blasts COVID relief bill as ‘wildly out of proportion’ with America’s needs
[Please note: this article, posted on Fox News today, is quoting remarks made by Senator McConnell last Wednesday.]
The $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package passed by the House is "a wildly out-of-proportion response to where the country is at the moment," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told "The Story" Wednesday.
"This $1.9 trillion bill is the same size of the bill we passed last April, right in the middle of the pandemic," McConnell told host Martha MacCallum. "This is not the same country we had one year ago. Only 9% of this $1.9 trillion is related to health care, and less than 1% of this $1.9T bill is related to vaccines."
McConnell added that money from previous aid bills still has not been spent and noted that "vaccines are going out, the economies are opening up," making it hard to justify the size of the bill.
Despite his criticism, McConnell said he suspected the bill would narrowly pass the Senate, with moderate Democrat Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona supporting it and Vice President Kamala Harris potential breaking a 50-50 tie.
"Any amount we can reduce the size of this is a good thing for the country," he added hopefully. "I think there's at least a chance that one or two Democrats could join all of us and spend a little bit less." (Read more)
Praying for the Stimulus Package
Father God, we see the wrangling and the arguing and the anger now on the floor of both chambers in Congress, as members are working to pass this critical
piece of legislation for the American people. But we see You, too, high and lifted up, as your train fills the temple . . . fully in control of the ways of men as we
seek Your face for solutions.
Lord God, we turn to Your Word, and we take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and we bind every spirit in the minds of these men and women that are working to delay passage of this bill. We ask You to forgive those who are acting upon selfish motives, for they know not what they do. So many in our nation need this relief, Father God! We ask for Your help now, amen.
In Your Name, we loose wisdom, insight, understanding, grace and peace upon the Senate and House chambers and we thank You that, in the end, this bill will be passed and signed into law, according to Your will, amen and amen.
- "Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. " (Ephesians 6:17)
- "Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 18:18)

Our Weekly Call to Repentance
Dear Saints,
A lifestyle of REPENTANCE is so close to the heart of God.
Indeed, He commands us to " "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" (Matthew 3:2)
How, then, can we approach His Throne of GRACE, in repentance?
We invite you to join us every week on Sunday evening, as we explore this vital topic together. We present a different prayer focus each week, leading us into repentance, so that we might approach His Throne of Grace in repentance, presenting ourselves to Him as a pure and a spotless Bride, without spot or wrinkle. (Ephesians 5:27)
Praying together, we desire to fulfill the mandate of Psalm 139:
" Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting." (Psalm 139:24)
You can join us, any Sunday evening, at 10:00 p.m. EST by calling:
712-770-5350
Access Code: 150411#
WELCOME!
". . . and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
"Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place." (2 Chronicles 7:14,15)
