Leviticus 23:23-25 (KJV) – And the LORD spake unto Moses saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a Sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. "Standing United Together....Under the Cross of Christ"
What is Rosh Hashanah?

(The Jewish New Year)
The Jewish New Year, anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, a day of judgment and coronation, and sounding of the shofar . . .

What: It is the birthday of the universe, the day G‑d created Adam and Eve, and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year.

When: The first two days of the Jewish new year, Tishrei 1 and 2, beginning at sundown on the eve of Tishrei 1. Rosh Hashanah 2021 begins at sundown on September 6 and continues through nightfall on September 8 (see more details here).

How: Candle lighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, prayer services that include the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on both mornings, and desisting from creative work. See our calendar for details.

Why Rosh Hashanah Is Important

The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah actually means “Head of the Year.” Just like the head controls the body, our actions on Rosh Hashanah have a tremendous impact on the rest of the year.

As we read in the Rosh Hashanah prayers, each year on this day “all inhabitants of the world pass before G‑d like a flock of sheep,” and it is decreed in the heavenly court “who shall live, and who shall die ... who shall be impoverished and who shall be enriched; who shall fall and who shall rise.”

It is a day of prayer, a time to ask the Almighty to grant us a year of peace, prosperity and blessing. But it is also a joyous day when we proclaim G‑d King of the Universe. The Kabbalists teach that the continued existence of the universe depends on G‑d’s desire for a world, a desire that is renewed when we accept His kingship anew each year on Rosh Hashanah.

First Priority: Hear the Shofar

The central observance of Rosh Hashanah is the sounding of the shofar (you can browse a selection of shofars here), the ram’s horn, on both days of the holiday (except if the first day is Shabbat, in which case we blow the shofar only on the second day).

The first 30 blasts of the shofar are blown following the Torah reading during morning services, and as many as 70 additional are blown during (and immediately after) the Musaf service, adding up to 100 blasts over the course of the Rosh Hashanah morning services (some communities sound another round of 30 blasts after services as well). For someone who cannot come to synagogue, the shofar may be heard the rest of the day. If you cannot make it out of your home, please contact your closest Chabad center to see about arranging a “house call,” or click here to learn to blow shofar yourself.

The shofar blowing contains a series of three types of blasts: tekiah, a long sob-like blast; shevarim, a series of three short wails; and teruah, at least nine piercing staccato bursts.

(Read more about the shofar blasts here.)

The blowing of the shofar represents the trumpet blast that is sounded at a king’s coronation. Its plaintive cry also serves as a call to repentance. The shofar itself recalls the Binding of Isaac, an event that occurred on Rosh Hashanah in which a ram took Isaac’s place as an offering to G‑d. (Read more on the reasons for shofar here.)

Prayer Requests for Rosh Hashanah, 2021

Submitted by: Intercessors for Israel

Monday at sunset, Rosh Hashanah, the first of the biblical fall feasts begins. For observant Jews, it starts a ten-day period of introspection in which they try to get right with man and with God. This is a good time to intercede for many Jews to receive a revelation of Messiah Yeshua.

  • As this feast is called in scripture Yom Teruah, the Day of the Blowing [of the Shofar], please wake up many Jews to hear You calling them and then grace them with Your salvation (Eph. 2:8-10).

  • You said in Shabbat's Torah portion that after You draw Your people back to Your land (Jer. 31:3) then You would circumcise their hearts (Deut. 30:1-6). Abba, do exactly that during this season.

  • As Your people read how Moses said that Your Word is close to them, in their mouth and in their heart, show that this refers to the good news of Messiah Yeshua (Deut. 30:11-14 cp. Rom 10:6-8).

  • Cause Jews to ask You who is this Afflicted One mentioned in the prophetic portion (Isa. 63:9).

  • Give your people a holy dissatisfaction with tradition and a deep hunger for You (Song 1:4; 2:4).

  • Gift many ultra-orthodox Jews with a yearning for a living relationship with You (Deut. 4:29).

  • Use the yearly tradition of seeking forgiveness to birth in Your people a desire for a more permanent solution – Your solution – to the problem of their sin (Heb. 9:28).

  • Lord, fulfill Your promise in Shabbat's prophetic portion concerning Israel at this time: I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for My anger is turned away from him. (Hos. 14:4)

  • Touch the hearts of many Israeli politicians, revealing to them their King and Messiah (Matt. 2:2).

  • Lord God of Israel, pour out Your spirit of grace and supplication on many Jews who are back in the land (Zech. 12:2-3, 10).

  • And Abba, do it for Your holy name's sake (Psa. 115:1-3; Ezek. 36:32)!

  • Anoint Your Words which are in the holiday prayer books and let them bear much fruit (Isa. 55:11).

  • Move on many rabbis both in Israel and in exile to expound Your Word and not to express their own personal thoughts or inclinations at this crucial time in history (Num. 22:38; Isa. 55:11).

The Fall High Holy Days and the Feast of Tabernacles

It is impossible to understand God’s festivals (His feasts) and high holy days of the Lord without also knowing God’s Hebrew calendar and His biblical prophecies. And we must have the heart for understanding God’s Kingdom purposes for the nation of Israel.

Many Christians have asked me: “Why should I celebrate the feasts in the Old Testament? Are we not under a New Covenant?” Yes, we are. However, here is why our understanding of these feasts is essential to the church.

Most of the Jewish people have yet to receive their Messiah and are, therefore, still veiled to their Messiah. They remain under the condemnation of sin and death and the judgment of the Mosaic Law.

Because Gentiles Christians are grafted into the natural branches, believing Israel, how the Lord deals with the unsaved Jewish people directly influences what happens with the nations. As Christians, we are eagerly awaiting the return of Christ and should, therefore, seek to understand events pointing to this return. These prophetic signs correlate with the Lord’s Hebraic calendar and feast cycles and give us this understanding.

Yeshua said, “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near” (Matthew 24:32, NKJV).[i] In other words, Israel is the time clock of God’s prophetic calendar and the key to understanding latter-day events that point to the imminent return of Christ.

The church will be actively engaged in God’s prophetic plans to restore Israel, both before and after the rapture. And she is commissioned to both establish and ultimately administer God’s earthly Kingdom—the center of which is the nation of Israel and God’s holy city, Jerusalem. Therefore, once again, the church should seek to understand prophecies concerning the restoration of Israel and Christ's return. (Read more here)

About Capitol Hill Prayer Partners

Our Mission Statement

Capitol Hill Prayer Partners (CHPP) is a ministry which is positioned on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., helping members of the Body of Christ to "pray for those in authority over us" in our federal government. Our primary purpose is to offer intercession on site for the members of Congress and their staffs each day that the Senate and the House of Representatives are in session; and our chief prayer focus is that "God's will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." [Matthew 6:10].

Because Jesus Christ has shed His blood for all, we, too, pray for ALL, in a nonpartisan manner. Also, because the scriptures indicate that "the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" (James 4:17), we are confident that fervent prayer, offered in the halls of the highest chambers of government in our land, can avail much for America. Capitol Hill Prayer Partners welcomes those who feel called to join us, engaging in this strategic work of intercession for our nation.
