Hurricane Ida, 'extremely dangerous' Category 4 storm, makes landfall in Louisiana on Katrina anniversary

Ida's maximum sustained winds have intensified to 150 mph
|
|
On the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s assault on New Orleans, Category 4 Ida slammed into the southeastern Louisiana coastline after rapidly gaining strength Saturday night. The powerhouse storm, packing winds of 150 mph, has begun to unleash winds over 70 mph in New Orleans along with torrential rain.
As the storm charges inland, destructive winds and flooding rain could extend more than 100 hundred miles through Baton Rouge.
Here’s what to know
- Ida made landfall at 12:55 p.m. near Port Fourchon, La., tied for the most intense hurricane on record to strike Louisiana, with 150-mph winds.
- Ida’s surge has reached four to seven feet in southeastern Louisiana and coastal Mississippi, engulfing roads, homes, businesses and marinas, and will test the New Orleans flood protection system, bolstered by a $14.5 billion investment after Katrina.
- President Biden promised Sunday to “put the country’s full weight” behind rescue-and-recovery efforts and noted that he signed emergency declarations for Louisiana and Mississippi in advance so that aid could be “surged.”
- Almost 1 million people in New Orleans and surrounding cities were put under a flash flood warning through Sunday night, while a “life-threatening” flash flood “emergency” was declared in some communities south of New Orleans, near the Mississippi River.
- More than half a million customers have lost power in Louisiana, and authorities warn that widespread power outages could last weeks.

1. State Department says 350 Americans still attempting to leave Afghanistan - Fox News
About 350 American citizens are still trying to leave Afghanistan in the final days of the U.S. withdrawal effort that's been marred by a deadly terrorist attack and a Taliban takeover. A State Department spokesperson said Saturday at least 5,400 Americans have been safely evacuated since Aug. 14, including nearly 300 U.S. citizens within the last day. But another 350 Americans remain in Afghanistan and have informed the State Department they want to get out. The State Department said they are providing "assistance around the clock" to these citizens seeking to evacuate.
In addition, the State Department has been in contact with another 280 people who have said they are American citizens but have not shared their plans to leave the country or have said they plan to stay. The flights out of Kabul's international airport have continued in the wake of the terrorist attack Thursday led by ISIS-K that killed 13 American service members. Their deaths mark a painful end to a 20-year war that already claimed more than 2,400 military lives.
In a 24-hour period that ended Saturday morning, about 6,800 people were evacuated from Kabul, bringing the total to 111,900 evacuees of all nationalities since Aug. 14, according to the White House. (Read more)

2. Pentagon says two ‘high-profile’ ISIS-K terrorists killed by US airstrike; another wounded - Fox News
The Pentagon announced Saturday that the U.S. strike targeting ISIS-K terrorists took out two high-profile "planners and facilitators" in response to the suicide bombing at Kabul Airport that killed 13 American soldiers and dozens of Afghans.
Major General Hank Taylor told reporters that the over-the-horizon counterterrorism operation killed "two high profile" ISIS-K targets and wounded another. The Pentagon had initially announced that only one target had been killed on Friday evening, but since then more information had come in.
The unmanned airstrike occurred in the Nangarhar Province and was a single mission. There were no civilian targets. Fox News confirmed Friday that the drone hit a vehicle carrying an ISIS-K target who was believed to be planning future attacks.
The Pentagon would not go into detail about the targets’ connections to the Thursday attack at Kabul Airport, but described them as "planners and facilitators." It would not release the names of those taken out by the U.S. strike. (Read more)

3. Biden doesn't deny report of US handing over names of Americans to Taliban: 'There may have been' - Fox News
President Biden did not deny a report circulating Thursday that officials in his administration had provided names of Americans in Afghanistan to the Taliban in order to help usher them safely to the airport.
"There have been occasions where our military has contacted their military counterparts in the Taliban and said this bus is coming through...made up of the following group...let it through," the president said. "Yes, there have been occasions like that."
Biden added that to his knowledge, the "bulk of that group" has been let through but can't say with "certitude" that there was a list of names passed to the Taliban.

4. US Veteran Volunteers Lead Covert Afghan Rescue Missions - Newsmax
A volunteer group of American military veterans have been helping hundreds of at-risk Afghan elite forces and their families to safety in a night-time operation called "Pineapple Express," a daring and heroic private mission detailed by embedded ABC News reporters witnessing the heart-pounding operations.
"Dozens of high-risk individuals, families with small children, orphans, and pregnant women, were secretly moved through the streets of Kabul throughout the night and up to just seconds before ISIS detonated a bomb into the huddled mass of Afghans seeking safety and freedom," a leader of the private rescue effort, Army Lt. Col. Scott Mann, a retired Green Beret commander, told ABC News, which had journalists embedded with the groups.
The group is working with the U.S. military and U.S. embassy to move people in small groups, if not one at a time, into the secured areas of the U.S.-controlled Hamid Karzai International Airport, according to the report.
The dangers of the operation were increased by the pair of suicide bombings that killed at least 13 U.S. service members and wounded 15 more.
Pineapple Express, an offshoot of "Task Force Pineapple," has rescued 500 Afghan special operators, assets and enablers, and their families overnight to date, ABC News reported.
The operation was named after refugees who would hold up their smartphones showing a graphic of yellow pineapples on a pink field to identify themselves, according to the report. The password has since changed.
"This Herculean effort couldn't have been done without the unofficial heroes inside the airfield who defied their orders to not help beyond the airport perimeter, by wading into sewage canals and pulling in these targeted people who were flashing pineapples on their phones," Mann told ABC News. 5. The prognosis for Afghanistan's Christians is 'dire', says former Muslim who fled to Britain - Christian Today
A former Muslim Afghan who converted to Christianity after coming to the UK is fearing the worst for Christians trapped in his former homeland.
The convert, named only as Jay, told the British Asian Christian Association (BACA) that the West had effectively "abandoned" Afghans and "left them in the middle of real devastation".
Jay fears that with Western troops pulling out, Christians and other minorities are in real danger. "Twenty per cent of the Afghan population are Shias and the Taliban Islamic ideology is the Wahabi Salafist's version, which treats Shias as infidel," he said.
"They detest the LGBTQ+ community, will be harsh on women and I fear the worst for Christians and other non-Muslims. "The prognosis is dire." (Read more)

6. Supporters rally to reinstate Marine officer fired for viral video rebuking brass on Afghanistan - Just the News
The veterans' community has rallied around a Marine Corps lieutenant colonel who was relieved of command after posting to social media a rebuke of senior officers for how they handled Afghanistan.
Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller on Thursday posted a video he recorded in the aftermath of the deadly Kabul airport bombing that killed 11 Marines, one Army Green Beret, and one Navy corpsman, along with scores of Afghans. In the video, Scheller wore his service uniform while issuing an extraordinary public challenge to his chain of command. Scheller calmly addressed the camera in what became a viral video that got him booted out of the Marine Corps on Friday.
While some veterans remarked privately that Scheller had set a bad example to younger service members, others hailed him as a courageous leader who had the courage to speak up.
Supporters quickly organized a grass roots campaign to reinstate Scheller. One man whose social media account identifies him as retired from Marine Force Recon, a special operations unit, asked people to take action on Scheller's behalf, asking that he be reinstated.
"Here's the public affairs office for the United States Marine Corps," wrote Anthony Slate on LinkedIn. "I suggest we the people contact the Marine Corps and let them know how we feel on the matter!!!!!" Slate posted contact numbers for Headquarters Marine Corps, along with social media contact information.
Scheller reported Friday on social media that he has been inundated with messages offering support for his decision to speak out — a post that brought thousands of comments, shares, and "likes" in addition to the more than 30,000 shares of his original video. (Read more)

7. 47 Victims Rescued, 102 Arrested in Multi-State Human Trafficking Operation - The Epoch Times
A human trafficking operation joined by 12 states has rescued 47 victims and arrested 102 persons, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt announced on Friday. “Using both buyer-centric and victim-centric ‘sting’ human trafficking operations, Missouri and participating states were able to rescue 47 victims and sex workers and provide needed medical services to 41, and arrested 102 across the country in connection with human trafficking,” the Missouri Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.
According to the information provided by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office, the operation rescued victims and made arrests in 12 states. . .
The operation, Operation United Front, was led by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol and joined by various law enforcement departments from Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas. The Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI also joined the efforts. The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri Attorney General’s Office served as the main communications hub to coordinate other states’ operations, while each state conducted its own operation simultaneously. Missouri also offered training and information about how to best conduct these operations to participating states.
“Operation United Front was an unprecedented human trafficking operation that brought together law enforcement agencies from different jurisdictions—something that rarely happens. When we all come together, we can affect change and more effectively fight human trafficking, a crime that is often multi-jurisdictional in nature,” Schmitt said. (Read more)

The Department of Defense has released the names of the 13 US service members who were killed in an attack outside Kabul's airport on Thursday, as the US and other Western countries raced to evacuate their citizens and allies out of Afghanistan.

US Airstrike Hits Suicide Bomber in Vehicle Going to Kabul Airport

Unnamed U.S. officials told Reuters and other news outlets Sunday that a military strike was launched against a possible suicide car bomber that was targeting the airport. Witnesses told Al Jazeera that they heard a loud explosion near the facility and footage showed black smoke rising into the sky.
The attack was later confirmed by a U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson.
“US military forces conducted a self-defense unmanned over-the-horizon airstrike today on a vehicle in Kabul, eliminating an imminent ISIS-K threat to Hamad Karzai International airport,” said Capt. Bill Urban, CENTCOM spokesperson, to reporters. “We are confident we successfully hit the target. Significant secondary explosions from the vehicle indicated the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material. We are assessing the possibilities of civilian casualties, though we have no indications at this time,” he added.
And Navy Captain Bill Urban, another spokesman for CENTCOM, told news outlets that the drone strike on Sunday was carried out in “self-defense,” adding that officials are “assessing the possibilities of civilian casualties, though we have no indications at this time”.
“We are confident we successfully hit the target,” Urban added. “Significant secondary explosions from the vehicle indicated the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material.” (Epoch Times) Read more.

I take authority over all the power of the enemy operating in IDA and I command the millibars, the pressure to rise in IDA. You rise, rise, rise, and crush that storm. We command the Host of Heaven to go into the storm to shred the bands and take the head off of it. We want the head off so it will have no direction. We command the winds to diminish and the impact to diminish. We decree that the water temperatures will come down so there isn't a wide variance needed to strengthen the storm. Not only will the storm dissipate, it shall collapse in upon itself. In the Name of Jesus we decree PEACE to this disappearing sprinkle. Amen.
We push that storm away from the coast line and command it to dissipate in Yeshua's name. You will not do destruction, you will not bring death or fear and we speak now against all storm surge or flooding. We will not tolerate it as a follower of Yeshua, Jesus Christ. This storm cannot come ashore. The ocean cannot go beyond the bounds that God set for it. IDA you will not become destructive, you will not bring death, you will not bring torrential rains, flooding, and fear to this country. You will be downgraded, downgraded, downgraded in Yeshua's Name. We command those winds to become slow and you will become nothing. I nullify all the reports of the weathermen, the meteorologist, anyone trying to hype that storm and bring fear in Yeshua's name. We declare that the enemy will not have his way. We pray for the people who are in the path of the storm or coming up to the path of the storm. We declare that whatever is taken back will be given back

Asteroid twice as big as Empire State Building

The 774-meter asteroid will fly past the Earth at a closer distance than the Moon.
A large asteroid over twice the size of New York's Empire State Building is set to fly past the Earth in early September.
Known as 2010 RJ53, the asteroid has a diameter of approximately 774 meters (2,539.37 feet), and is set to fly past the planet on September 9, according to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's asteroid database browser.
The asteroid will pass by approximately 366,000 kilometers away from the planet. This means it will fly closer to the Earth than the Moon, which is located 384,400 kilometers away from the planet. Read More
