A White House Proclamation

Proclamation on 850th Anniversary of the
Martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket

Proclaimed on Tuesday, December 29, 2020

Today is the 850th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket on December 29, 1170. Thomas Becket was a statesman, a scholar, a chancellor, a priest, an archbishop, and a lion of religious liberty.Before the Magna Carta was drafted, before the right to free exercise of religion was enshrined as America’s first freedom in our glorious Constitution, Thomas gave his life so that, as he said, “the Church will attain liberty and peace.”

The son of a London sheriff and once described as “a low‑born clerk” by the King who had him killed, Thomas Becket rose to become the leader of the church in England. When the crown attempted to encroach upon the affairs of the house of God through the Constitutions of Clarendon, Thomas refused to sign the offending document. When the furious King Henry II threatened to hold him in contempt of royal authority and questioned why this “poor and humble” priest would dare defy him, Archbishop Becket responded “God is the supreme ruler, above Kings” and “we ought to obey God rather than men.”

Because Thomas would not assent to rendering the church subservient to the state, he was forced to forfeit all his property and flee his own country. Years later, after the intervention of the Pope, Becket was allowed to return — and continued to resist the King’s oppressive interferences into the life of the church. Finally, the King had enough of Thomas Becket’s stalwart defense of religious faith and reportedly exclaimed in consternation: “Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?”

The King’s knights responded and rode to Canterbury Cathedral to deliver Thomas Becket an ultimatum: give in to the King’s demands or die. Thomas’s reply echoes around the world and across the ages. His last words on this earth were these: “For the name of Jesus and the protection of the Church, I am ready to embrace death.” Dressed in holy robes, Thomas was cut down where he stood inside the walls of his own church.

Thomas Becket’s martyrdom changed the course of history. It eventually brought about numerous constitutional limitations on the power of the state over the Church across the West. In England, Becket’s murder led to the Magna Carta’s declaration 45 years later that: “[T]he English church shall be free, and shall have its rights undiminished and its liberties unimpaired.”

. . . Thomas Becket’s death serves as a powerful and timeless reminder to every American that our freedom from religious persecution is not a mere luxury or accident of history, but rather an essential element of our liberty. It is our priceless treasure and inheritance. And it was bought with the blood of martyrs.

. . . To honor Thomas Becket’s memory, the crimes against people of faith must stop, prisoners of conscience must be released, laws restricting freedom of religion and belief must be repealed, and the vulnerable, the defenseless, and the oppressed must be protected. The tyranny and murder that shocked the conscience of the Middle Ages must never be allowed to happen again. As long as America stands, we will always defend religious liberty.A society without religion cannot prosper. A nation without faith cannot endure — because justice, goodness, and peace cannot prevail without the grace of God.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim December 29, 2020, as the 850th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket. I invite the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches and customary places of meeting with appropriate ceremonies in commemoration of the life and legacy of Thomas Becket.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of December, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-fifth.

DONALD J. TRUMP

Read the entire proclamation

Dear Father, we weep with joy as we thank You for President Trump, who so deeply respects liberty that he has issued this statement honoring Thomas Becket’s martyrdom for religious freedom--“He loved not his life unto death”. May the U.S. continue to stand as a beacon on a hill as our President asks for an end to “religious persecution worldwide”. Father, enable Your people to stand courageously in the face of tyrrany.

"And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death." (Revelation 12:11)

1. Iran warns Israel not to cross 'red lines' - Israel National News

Iran warned Israel on Monday not to cross its "red lines" in the Gulf in the final days of Donald Trump's presidency and following a reported Israeli submarine deployment.
Foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh stressed the Islamic republic would defend itself against any American military "adventure" in the runup to the January 20 handover of power in Washington.
The statement came a week after the US Navy announced a nuclear submarine was being deployed to the Gulf, in a new show of force directed at Iran.

2. Haaretz: AG Mandelblit Assembled Secret Forum of Jurists to Help Decide Netanyahu’s Prosecution - Jewish Press

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit convened a forum of senior jurists he kept outside the official discussions in his office regarding the cases against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The AG held secret discussions with this group, informing the Justice Ministry or the State Attorney’s Office, according to a report by Haaretz published Tuesday (מנדלבליט הקים בחשאי פורום משפטנים מחוץ לפרקליטות ודן אתם בתיקי נתניהו).

The series of meetings took place in 2019 and began shortly before the AG announced his intention to prosecute Netanyahu following a hearing with the PM. The participants in the meetings—which were held at the Yad Hanadiv think tank in Jerusalem and not in the AG’s office—were asked to maintain complete confidentiality and not to document the meetings or keep notes.
“We were actually warned,” said one participant.

In Mandelblit’s official schedule, those consultation sessions were represented as a “meeting with academics.” According to some of the participants, secrecy was essential because the AG shared with the forum members his decisions regarding Netanyahu’s prosecution as they were being formulated, well in advance of announcing them to the public.

3. Veteran Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai launches new center-left party, ‘The Israelis’ - Times of Israel

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai launched a new center-left political party, The Israelis, on Tuesday to run in the elections in March, recruiting Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn as his second-in-command.
Launching his campaign with an impassioned speech, Huldai said he could not “stand idly by” as Israel is led by a “crazy” right-wing government, which he charged was eroding the country’s core values and threatening its democracy.
He lamented that Israelis have “grown accustomed” to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s alleged corruption and divisive style of leadership, and vowed he will get Israel out of its current “despair.”

“We have grown accustomed to a crazy government. I will no longer stand idly by, I am here to announce a new party,” he said, recounting his history as an IDF fighter pilot, as an educator and — for the past 22 years — as the mayor of Tel Aviv.

4. Benny Gantz announces Blue and White run Tuesday night - Jerusalem Post

Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz announced at a press conference on Tuesday night that his Blue and White Party will run in the next election, and he will lead it.

There had been speculation that Gantz would retire from politics after two years of political challenges that wore him down. But Gantz said he was ready to go back on the campaign trail.

Gantz said his unity government with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ended due to Netanyahu's caprices. He said he did not regret joining the government, because it prevented Netanyahu from doing whatever he wanted running the country on his own, including obtaining immunity.

"Blue and White lied down on a grenade, but as I have throughout my career, I was serving the public," he said. "I saved the State of Israel. I saved Israeli democracy."

5. Dozens of Headstones in French Cemetery Defaced With Swastikas – but Jewish Graves Next Door Untouched - Algemeiner

In a seemingly bizarre act of vandalism, dozens of headstones at a Christian cemetery near Paris were defaced with Nazi swastikas on Sunday night, while graves at an adjoining Jewish cemetery were left untouched.
Sixty-seven graves at the cemetery in the town of Fontainebleau were daubed with the Nazi symbol in pink, white and silver, according to the local mayor.
The words “Biobananas” and “Charles” were also daubed on some of the headstones, but there were “no antisemitic inscriptions,” the mayor, Frédéric Valletoux, told reporters.
The Jewish cemetery situated alongside was undisturbed by the vandals, however.
Gerald Darmanin, France’s interior minister, declared on Twitter that he was “sickened by the desecration of the cemetery.”

1. Biden warns of Trump officials’ ‘roadblocks’ to transition - AP News

President-elect Joe Biden is warning of massive damage done to the national security apparatus by the Trump administration and “roadblocks” in communication between agency officials and his transition team that could undermine Americans’ security.

During remarks Monday in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden said his team has faced “obstruction” from the “political leadership” at the Defense Department and the Office of Management and Budget as they’ve sought to gather necessary information to continue the transition of power.

“Right now we just aren’t getting all the information that we need from the outgoing administration in key national security areas. It’s nothing short, in my view, of irresponsibility,” Biden said.

Read more

- Thank you Father for the courageous step taken by our President to protect America's sovereignty through national security protections. The media is happy to discuss Joe Biden and every move he takes, but we ask You Holy One to interfere with the lines of communication that are untruthful, in Jesus name.

"For the king of Babylon stands at the parting of the road, at the fork of the two roads, to use divination:  he shakes the arrows, he consults the images, he looks at the liver."  (Ezekiel 21:21)

2. Nashville police camera footage captures moments before, after explosion
 - Fox News

Police body camera footage taken from one of the six Nashville police officers credited with evacuating people before last week's Christmas Day bombing shows the moments before and after the blast that shook the city's downtown.

The 13-minute video taken from Officer Michael Sipos' camera shows him and other officers walking in the area as they try to investigate a suspicious RV blaring a loud warning around 6:30 a.m.

"Your primary objective is to evacuate these buildings now," a voice can be heard coming from the RV. "Do not approach this vehicle."
The footage shows the officers trying to evacuate families ahead of the blast as the RV warns of a bomb. As Sipos and another officer walk across the street from the vehicle, he comments on the alert.

-  Lord God, You truly are an ever-present help in time of need and we so thank You for Your protection and being there with the officers and citizens to order everyone's footsteps.  This whole explosion was a huge tragedy and we ask you to restore what the locust has eaten in the lives of the people impacted.

3. House overrides Trump veto of defense bill
 - The Hill

The House voted Monday to override President Trump’s veto of a must-pass defense policy bill, the first successful override vote of Trump’s presidency. The House voted 322-87 to override Trump, easily surpassing the two-thirds majority needed to overcome a veto.

The action now moves to the Senate, which also needs to muster two-thirds support in order for Trump’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to be overridden.

The NDAA passed both chambers of Congress earlier this month with large bipartisan majorities, but it was unclear exactly how many Republicans would buck the president when it came to the override vote. In the end, 109 Republicans broke with Trump to support the bill. Sixty-six Republicans voted against the bill Monday, compared with 40 who voted against it earlier this month.

- Father, we commit this defense bill into Your capable hands. We do not know how to pray in this matter, but we know You have it in Your heart, so we choose to align with You and Your perfect plan for this nation, our military and President. Please bless and shelter all our military forces who are still on the frontlines of conflict worldwide. Have Your way, Holy One.

"O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water."  (Psalm 63:1)

4. House passes bill boosting stimulus checks to $2,000 in bipartisan vote
The Hill

The bill passed in a 275-134 vote, with support from 44 Republicans. It needed a two-thirds majority under the procedures that were used for consideration.

The measure faces an uphill battle in the GOP-controlled Senate. Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), a member of Senate Republican leadership, said last week that he didn’t think a bill to increase the stimulus checks to $2,000 could pass in the upper chamber.

But bringing up the measure on Monday allowed Democrats to force Republicans to take a recorded vote on an issue that is popular with Democratic lawmakers and the public and supported by President Trump.

The vote came after Trump last week criticized the relief package over the size of the direct payments, creating uncertainty about the fate of the legislation. When he ultimately signed the relief package on Sunday, Trump said in a statement that he “told Congress that I want far less wasteful spending and more money going to the American people in the form of $2,000 checks per adult and $600 per child.”

- Lord, this bill will add an enormous amount of money to our federal deficit and that doesn't seem like responsible stewardship.  We pray rather, that You would make a way for the economy to move forward safely and people would be able to return to work and school, so the dire and tragic financial situations for so many people would be alleviated.  Father God, we ask You to make a way where there seems to be no way in this matter.

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage."  (Galatians 5:1)

5. Supreme Court Requires Lower Courts to Exclude Illegal Aliens From Census Count
 - Epoch Times

Following its ruling earlier this month that allowed the Trump administration to remove illegal aliens from the 2020 Census count, the Supreme Court on Dec. 28 threw out two lower court decisions that went the other way, that barred the government from eliminating that population from the process of allocating congressional seats and Electoral College votes that officially determine the presidency.

In the cases Trump v. Useche from Maryland and Trump v. City of San Jose, California, the Supreme Court vacated the judgments of the lower courts, sending the cases back to those courts “with instructions to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction.”

The unsigned order didn’t explain why the court acted at this time, but referenced its 6–3 decision on Dec. 18 in Trump v. New York.

- Dear Lord, we rejoice at this just decision by the Supreme Court to exclude illegal aliens from the census. We thank You that this count will now be more honest and fair for US citizens and for all states. We pray that his high court will continue to act with wisdom that is from above and that is not politically correct.

- "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy." (James 3:17)

6. Trump Calls For End Of ‘Religious Persecution Worldwide’ On 850th Anniversary Of Archbishop’s Murder -
The daily Caller

President Donald Trump called for an end to “religious persecution worldwide” Monday in a statement marking the 850th anniversary of Archbishop Thomas Becket’s death.

Becket, born approximately 1120 AD, was killed by King Henry II knights in his cathedral after clashing with the British monarch over the Catholic Church’s sovereignty, according to the BBC. Tuesday, December 29, is the official feast day for the fallen saint.

“Thomas Becket was a statesman, a scholar, a chancellor, a priest, an archbishop, and a lion of religious liberty,” Trump said in the statement. “Before the Magna Carta was drafted, before the right to free exercise of religion was enshrined as America’s first freedom in our glorious Constitution, Thomas gave his life so that, as he said, ‘the Church will attain liberty and peace.'”

- We thank You, Father, for President Trump's calling attention to the life of this martyr who stood up to government tyranny against the practice of his religion before any guarantees were written to this protect right that we now enjoy in our country.  We fervently pray that this God-given right will remain in our country and spread more thoroughly to all parts of the world.

"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord, there is freedom."  (2 Corinthians 3:17)

7. Trump Rips into ‘weak and tired Republican leadership’ in fiery tweets - DML News

President Trump ripped into Republican senators in a pair of fiery tweets Tuesday morning, after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed to override Trump’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act.

Last week, the president vetoed the $740 billion bill, as it did not include the repeal of Section 230, and did not stop the renaming of military bases named after Confederate generals.

The House voted to override Trump’s veto on Monday.

President Trump lashed out, tweeting, “Weak and tired Republican “leadership” will allow the bad Defense Bill to pass. Say goodbye to VITAL Section 230 termination, your National Monuments, Forts (names!) and Treasures (inserted by Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren), 5G, and our great soldiers being removed and brought home from foreign lands who do NOTHING for us.”

- Heavenly Father, we pray for leaders in Congress who will be strong enough and courageous enough to stand up for what is wise and right in Your eyes and even in the eyes of the general public who have a better view of the various laws to be passed. We ask that You would show the men and women in Congress how to free themselves from political correctness and the influence of special interests both foreign and domestic that hurt our country.

- "Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity. We have done so, not relying on worldly wisdom but on God's grace." (2 Corinthians 1:12)

8. Mozambique: Cyclone Chalane to hit Beira Wednesday Morning - All Africa

Cyclone Chalane is moving west across the Mozambique Channel and is expected to reach Beira tomorrow morning (Wednesday 30 Dec) with winds up to 100 km/h, as the cyclone picks up heat and energy from the warm Mozambique Channel.  It is predicted to continue west into Zimbabwe Wednesday afternoon. The cyclone comes just 9 months after the devastating cyclone Idai. Chalane should be less damaging, but still with strong winds and heavy rain.

Chalane crossed Madagascar Friday and Saturday with "heavy wind and rains, but limited damage," according to OCHA. The US Navy Cyclone Tracking Centre (CTC) produces the best maps, with predicted course and wind speed, undated twice a day.

- Lord, thank You for this decision by the Supreme Court that barred the count of illegals in the 2020 Census. Lord, the U.S. Republic was based on the Rule of Law; may each state uphold all the laws of the land or suffer consequences. We ask that the Dec. 28 decision stand and be implemented; may illegals not be used as a ruse to gain more congressional seats and electoral votes.

"Both hands are skilled in doing evil; the ruler demands gifts, the judge accepts bribes, the powerful dictate what they desire—they all conspire together."    (Micah 7:3)

9. McConnell blocks Democrats' request to hold vote on $2,000 stimulus checks
- Axios

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday blocked Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's (D-N.Y.) request to hold a vote on a House standalone measure that would boost the size of stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000 per person.

McConnell did not explain why he objected to Schumer's request to fast-track the bill, but noted that President Trump has demanded Congress act on repealing liability protections for tech companies and election-related reforms, in addition to the stimulus checks

“Those are the three important subjects the president has linked together. This week, the Senate will begin a process to bring these three priorities into focus," McConnell said in a possible nod to a future package.

- Father God, as Congress continues to wrangle over this critical bill, we ask that You would light the path before them, making all crooked paths straight. We ask this in Your name, amen and amen.

10. Nets Hide Fact Democrat Warnock Oversaw Camp that Abused Kids for Years
 - News Busters

While ABC, CBS, and NBC all propped up the false charges of insider trading against Georgia Republican Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue (and never corrected the record), they refused to cover new reporting on Monday from the Washington Free Beacon, detailing the account of a former camper who was repeatedly abused by a staff that Democratic Senate candidate Raphael Warnock oversaw for a number of years.

Luckily, Fox News Channel’s Special Report gave the breaking news some airtime. “The Washington Free Beacon reports that counselors at a camp run by Raphael Warnock in Maryland, in 2002, poured urine on a 12-year-old camper and forced him to remain outside overnight as punishment for wetting his bed,” reported correspondent Steve Harrigan. “The camper, Anthony Washington, now 30, said his family received a financial settlement in a lawsuit.”

According to the original reporting from the Free Beacon’s Alana Goodman, “Washington’s account of the 2002 events provides the first direct insight into the alleged abuse and neglect that transpired at Camp Farthest Out, which Warnock oversaw as senior pastor of Maryland's Douglas Memorial Community Church, and raises new questions for the Democrat, who is currently vying for a Senate seat in Georgia.”

- O Holy One, who sits in the Heavens, we are grieved at this report. We ask for a move of deep, inner healing from Your hand in the lives of all youth who were traumatized at Camp Farthest Out. We ask that this abomination in the life of Raphael Warnock be shown in the headlines of our media, so that the voters in the State of Georgia will know the character of this man and vote accordingly. In Your name we offer this prayer, amen.

- "He uncovers deep things out of darkness, and brings the shadow of death to light." (Job 12:22)

The Revolution

The Daily Jot, Bill Wilson, December 29, 2020

There has been an ongoing progressive revolution in this country for over two decades, and historically, maybe over 110 years. Progressives, the polite term for socialists or communists, keep chipping away at the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, waging class and race warfare, and changing social norms with the end game of toppling America. The way of socialists is to convince its constituents that life will be better after they are in control, then establish a one-party totalitarian system where everyone except leadership is under the thumb of a dictatorship. We all may remember Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s promise, “We do not have to invade the United States, we will destroy you from within.”

Khrushchev knew what his fellow predecessors understood for generations—that with about 3% of the population’s support, he could successfully overthrow a nation with a predominantly nonviolent revolution. In 2011, Harvard political scientist Erica Chenoweth published research of hundreds of revolutions indicating that nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts, and get this: those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population HAVE NEVER FAILED to bring about change. What have we seen since 2016 when Donald Trump was elected president but a steady protest of a certain leftist belief system? And quite frankly, like it or not, they have been very successful. Their 3.5% seems a lot larger than that. But Khrushchev also knew, in his own words in 1964, "The press is our chief ideological weapon."

Pollster George Barna says that 70% of Americans profess to be Christian. This is a far greater segment of the population than 3.5%. But Barna’s research also indicates that of that 70%, only 6% possess a biblical worldview, and only 2% of 18-29 years old possess a biblical worldview. Barna says, “Christians are developing more and more decidedly unchristian beliefs, demonstrating that many of these professing Christians are in fact un-professing pagans.” He writes, “Americans appear to be creating unique, highly customized worldviews based on feelings, experiences and opportunities…that the objective of life is feeling good about yourself; that all faiths are of equal value; that entry into God’s eternal presence is determined by one’s personal means of choice; and that there are no absolutes to guide or grow us morally.”

To me, this is exactly why our nation is giving way to the progressive/socialist movement. We have the upper hand, yet because we are accepting of an extra-biblical, emotional and self-indulgent biblical worldview, we are hardly what Christ calls in Matthew 5:13, “the salt of the earth.” And more like he says, “but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” Which is what we are seeing in our society today. If your pastor is preaching the type of gospel described by Barna, it’s time for him/her to move on, or for you to move on. No excuses. With no absolutes, we tolerate everything and stand for nothing. As we go into 2021, don’t just say you are a Christian, be one. Let’s then see what the revolution does.

Classic Hymns

My Country Tis of Thee

To listen to this classic hymn, CLICK HERE

Words:  Samuel Smith
Music:  America

My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountainside,
Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.

No more shall tyrants here
With haughty steps appear,
And soldier bands;
No more shall tyrants tread
Above the patriot dead—
No more our blood be shed
By alien hands.

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees,
Sweet freedom’s song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God, to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing;
Long may our land be bright
With freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our king.

Our Mission Statement

Capitol Hill Prayer Partners (CHPP) is a ministry which is positioned on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., helping members of the Body of Christ to "pray for those in authority over us" in our federal government.
