House in Recess After Tumultuous Week of Spending Negotiations
|
|
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) reached a point of frustration on Sept. 21 after Republicans failed—for the second time—to pass a procedural vote to allow debate on the 2024 defense appropriations bill.
The failed vote capped a string of setbacks for Mr. McCarthy in trying to avert a government shutdown, which will be triggered when the fiscal year ends on Sept. 30 if Congress does not take action to ensure ongoing funding.
The usually unflappable speaker voiced irritation with a handful of hardline Republican members who have blocked legislation proposed by their own party this week.
"It's frustrating in the sense that I don't understand why anybody votes against bringing the idea and having the debate. And then you got all the amendments if you don't like the bill,” Mr. McCarthy told reporters on Sept. 21.
“This is a whole new concept of individuals that just want to burn the whole place down. It doesn't work.” (The Epoch Times) Read more here

- Father, we pray that Your perfect will prevail over this serious problem with the US budget. We ask that You bring clarity and peace to the negotiations, and truth to bear against disagreements.

UAW Strike Deadlock Continues; Experts Warn on Repercussions
|
|
As the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike entered day 5 on Sept. 19, negotiators for the union and the Big Three automakers remained at an impasse as failed weekend talks bled into the workweek.
The two sides are apparently far apart, leading to analysts' predictions for a long-lasting deadlock as well as experts warning that the union's demands would make the automakers less productive and competitive than their nonunion rivals.
About 12,700 members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union walked off the job last week after their four-year contracts with the Detroit Three expired with no agreement on a fresh batch of labor deals that would last through 2027.
The union has boasted that its demands are the most ambitious in many years.
"As I go to the table this week, I'll be giving the Big Three the most audacious and ambitious list of proposals that they've seen in decades," UAW President Shawn Fain said in a video message before the talks began several months ago.
The Big Three automakers have said they want to reach a deal that's fair to workers, but also gives the companies flexibility as the industry shifts to electric models that have fewer parts and require less labor. (The Epoch Times) Read more here.

|
- Lord, we pray that You will undertake for the auto industry as this strike continues. We speak truth and peace and we bind both the big Automakers and the unions from creating even more upheaval. Let truth and wisdom be the answer.
- "So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding." (Romans 14:19)

Staten Island Protesters Arrested After Blocking Bus Carrying Illegal Immigrants
|
|
Police made 10 arrests after fed-up Staten Island residents took to the street Tuesday night and physically blocked the arrival of a bus carrying dozens of illegal immigrants to a residential school that had recently been converted into a shelter.
“The police are arresting law-abiding American citizens to protect law-breaking non-citizens,” Mark Fonte, a lawyer who has filed a lawsuit on behalf of residents of Staten Island trying to stop the city from relocating illegal immigrants to the borough, told The Epoch Times. “The mayor is using his emergency powers to place these unvetted immigrants in residential communities against the will of the people, and the people are angry.”
“The residents are trying to send a message to the migrants that they are not welcome here,” added Mr. Fonte.
Residents have taken to the streets over concerns that the recent influx of illegal immigrants into the borough is changing the nature of the neighborhood, and because many are unvetted, they would further contribute to already high crime rates, according to Mr. Fonte. (The Epoch Times) Read more here.

|
- Lord, we ask for a Heavenly solution to the migrant problem on our borders. We bind the current administration from furthering the influx, and ask that You stop them from creating serious difficulties for the residents of cities where this is occurring.

1. Netanyahu: US trip brought ‘many achievements’ for the State of Israel - JNS
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for Israel from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport early on Sunday morning, wrapping up a six-day trip to the United States that included meetings with heads of state and an address to the United Nations General Assembly.
Netanyahu was set to touch down in Tel Aviv on Sunday afternoon, just after Israel’s airspace officially closes for the Yom Kippur holiday, but before the holiday starts at sundown.
“I think this visit brought many achievements, and with your help, and thanks to you, we were able to do lots of good things for the State of Israel,” the premier told fellow members of the Israeli delegation shortly before takeoff, noting he had met with some 20 leaders from five different continents during the visit. 2. IDF uncovers Hamas cell planning Yom Kippur attack - World Israel News
Israeli security forces arrested eight terrorists Sunday, breaking up a terror cell the military said was preparing for an imminent attack on an Israeli target.
The eight terrorists, affiliated with the Gaza-based Hamas terror organization, were operating out of the Birzeit University near Ramallah, an IDF spokesperson said Sunday afternoon.
The terror cell was planning on carrying out an attack in the near future, the army added, likely during the Yom Kippur holiday, which begins at sundown on Sunday.
IDF forces working in conjunction with the Shin Bet carried out the Birzeit University campus raid. (Read more)

3. Israel Boosts Gaza Border Security after Palestinian Terror Groups Vow Escalation - Algemeiner
i24 News – Several hours before Israel shuts down for Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, several Palestinian terrorist groups announced their intention to escalate the conflict. A joint statement on Sunday by Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine(PFLP) said the groups will step up the coordination in an effort to exact a higher price from the Jewish state.
The decision to to “deal with Israel’s aggression” was made at a meeting in Beirut attended by senior terror operatives including the head of the Hamas politburo Salah al-Aruri; Islamic Jihad’s deputy general secretary Ziad al-Nakhla; and the PFLP’s deputy secretary general Jamil Mazhar.
The statement likewise condemned the ongoing normalization talks between Israel and Saudi Arabia, calling it “a clear betrayal of the blood of the martyrs and the Arab people” on behalf of Riyadh.
The statement comes amid heightened security tensions in the Palestinian territories, including near-daily riots on the Gaza border fence and a steady stream of intelligence reports regarding planned terrorist attacks against Israelis.
Later on Sunday, Israel Defense Forces announced it decided to beef up the security in areas adjacent to the Gaza border, deploying an additional battalion to the area. (Read more)

4. In UN speech, Saudi FM urges Palestinian state, doesn’t mention normalization, Israel - Times of Israel
The Saudi foreign minister addressed the UN General Assembly on Saturday in a speech that warned that regional security in the Middle East hinged on a “just, comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue” and appeared to criticize Israel for “unilateral measures that are a flagrant violation of international law” while making no mention of the country.
“Security in the Middle East region requires the acceleration of…a just, comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue; the solution must be based on resolutions in the international arena and must bring about a peace that allows [the] Palestinian people to have an independent state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital,” said Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
He added that Saudi Arabia also “rejects and condemns all the unilateral steps that constitute a flagrant violation of international law and which contribute to the collapse of regional and international peace efforts and are hindering the path of diplomatic solutions,” an apparent reference to Israeli approval of West Bank settlement construction and the legalization of some outposts in recent months. 1: Federal Judge Delivers Blow To Biden Admin’s Efforts To Restrict Offshore Oil And Gas Drilling - Daily Caller
A federal judge on Thursday issued a setback to the Biden administration’s efforts to crack down on oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
U.S. District Judge James Cain of the Western District of Louisiana issued a preliminary injunction against the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) move to reduce the area of an offshore oil lease in the Gulf by about 6 million acres and essentially impose restrictive protections for the Rice’s whale in the region. The injunction asserts that DOI and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) implemented the challenged actions in a way that was procedurally invalid, and that DOI’s decision to do so was both arbitrary and capricious.
“The process followed here looks more like a weaponization of the Endangered Species Act than the collaborative, reasoned approach prescribed by the applicable laws and regulations,” Cain wrote in the injunction. “Even when an agency’s decision is based on political considerations, it is not excused from justifying the position—particularly when the decision is a pivot from a prior policy,” he continued, adding that “failure to do so leads to ‘surprise switcheroo’ by an agency against regulated entities.”
- Lord, we thank You for this ruling, but we pray that it will actually stop the Biden administration from their anti-fossil fuel agenda. We pray for the US energy industry to rebound from these actions.

2: Joe Biden from Rose Garden: ‘If You Need 80 Shots in a Magazine You Shouldn’t Own a Gun’- Breitbart
While announcing the launch of an executive level gun control office–the Office of Gun Violence Prevention–President Joe Biden called again for a ban on “assault weapons” and said, “If you need 80 shots in a magazine you shouldn’t own a gun.”
On September 19, 2023, Breitbart News reported Biden’s plans to launch the executive gun control office and, on September 21, 2023, noted that he had tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to lead it.
In announcing the launch of the office on Friday from the Rose Garden, Biden referenced the gun control Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) worked with Democrats to help secure in the summer of 2022.
He then stressed that he is not finished pursuing gun control, and spoke of securing again the federal “assault weapons” ban which was in place from 1994 to 2004. That ban included a prohibition on “high capacity” magazines as well.
Biden then said, “‘If you need 80 shots in a magazine you shouldn’t own a gun.” (Read more)
- Lord, we ask Your protection over law-abiding gun owners, and pray that You will find a way to stop the constant attempts to disarm the public in actions against the Constitution. We pray that this administration will see the truth and target the criminals.

3: Report: Leaked Veterans Affairs Training Video Promotes Abortion, Says Pregnancy Not Exclusive to Women - Breitbart
A training video allegedly leaked from the Department of Veterans Affairs promotes abortion and even suggests that men can become pregnant, Fox News reported Wednesday.
The “Reproductive Health Training” video from April 2023 tells staffers how to talk to veterans who are considering aborting their babies.
“Before discussing counseling procedures, the video began with a ‘note’ on language that clarified, ‘Not all people who seek abortions identify as women.’ Another note read, ‘Person who is pregnant’ is inclusive and preferred to ‘pregnant woman,'” according to the report.
Another slide tells staffers to use certain language about abortion, like “embryo or fetus” instead of “baby or unborn child,” “veteran or person” instead of “mother,” and “embryonic or fetal cardiac activity” instead of “fetal heartbeat.” (Read more)
- Lord, the US military should have nothing whatsoever to do with abortion. We pray that You will remove every vestige of this agenda from the Pentagon and all branches of the military. We ask that they focus on warfighting and protecting America.
- “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11)

4: Louisiana governor plans to request federal emergency declaration over saltwater intrusion threatening water - Fox
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said the state is days away from requesting a federal emergency declaration related to the saltwater intrusion of the Mississippi River that threatens drinking water.
"I can tell you in the next couple of days we will be requesting an emergency declaration from the federal government as well for the purpose of getting more federal agencies involved to the extent that can be helpful," Bel Edwards said in an update. "But also authorizing us to take emergency protective measures with some level of reimbursement available from the federal government should that federal emergency declaration be granted."
A representative with the governor’s office confirmed to Fox News Digital, "We are still working on our request and hope to have it done soon." The governor already issued a state of emergency declaration earlier this month, and he noted that the state has already had some assistance from federal partners. (Read more)
- Lord, we pray for Louisiana and all states that are experiencing extreme situations from natural disasters. We ask that the waters in Louisiana will be cleansed by Your hand, and that all will see what You have done rather than man.

5: Pentagon Ensures Ukraine Will Continue To Receive Funding If Government Shuts Down While Border Security Could Take Hit - Daily Wire
Ukraine doesn’t have to worry about a potential U.S. government shutdown affecting the flow of cash, weapons, and military equipment to its country after the Pentagon exempted Ukrainian operations from the possible shutdown.
As lawmakers on Capitol Hill attempt to work out a deal to avoid a government shutdown, a Department of Defense spokesman told POLITICO Thursday that the Pentagon will ensure its Ukraine operations such as training and weapons shipments to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces continue even if the U.S. government shuts down. In previous government shutdowns, only military activities deemed to be essential to national security continued normal operations, the outlet reported.
“Operation Atlantic Resolve is an excepted activity under a government lapse in appropriations,” DOD spokesman Chris Sherwood said of the continued U.S. assistance to Ukraine.
The statement from the DOD was a reversal of what it said just two days prior when it worried that a government shutdown could interrupt the “delivery of defense articles, services and/or military education and training” to Ukraine.
- Lord, surely there is a solution to the budget fight that will not impact our nation’s borders. We also pray for wisdom regarding aid to Ukraine. We humbly repent for allowing our own weapon stockpiles to be decimated while assisting a nation invaded by Russia. We pray for a move of Your Spirit to bring wisdom from Your throne.
- “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6)

6. Longtime Democrat Dallas Mayor Switching To GOP: ‘American Cities Need Republicans’ - Daily Wire
Democratic Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson announced in a Wall Street Journal op-ed Friday that he will switch his party affiliation to Republican.
Johnson, who served nine years as a Democrat in the Texas Legislature before being elected mayor in 2019, wrote that “American cities need Republicans — and Republicans need American cities.”
“I have no intention of changing my approach to my job. But today I am changing my party affiliation,” Johnson added. “Next spring, I will be voting in the Republican primary. When my career in elected office ends in 2027 on the inauguration of my successor as mayor, I will leave office as a Republican.”
Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott celebrated Johnson’s decision to leave the Democratic Party and join the GOP. While Johnson’s position is technically nonpartisan, his party switch makes Dallas the second major Texas city to be led by a mayor affiliated with the Republican Party along with Fort Worth, The Texas Tribune reported. (Read more)
- Lord, we pray for this man to come to know You. Changing the name of the party means nothing if the heart behind it is planning to do the same things as before. We ask that all hidden things be revealed, and his heart be filled with the knowledge of the Lord.

7. UAW Announces Massive Expansion Of Strike Against Major Automakers - Daily Caller
The United Auto Workers (UAW) announced on Friday that more workers will go on strike as the union and automakers continue to be unable to reach a deal.
The union announced that 38 new plants across the U.S. will join the partial strike at noon against the Big Three automakers as negotiations continue to fail to produce a new contract for the 146,000 workers, with strikes expanding against GM and Stellantis but not Ford, as the company has cooperated more than the others, according to the UAW announcement. The UAW first announced its partial strike on Sept. 14, striking at three plants: GM’s plant in Wentzville, Missouri; Ford’s plant in Wayne, Michigan; and Stellantis’ Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio.
“So, today at noon Eastern time, all of the parts distribution centers at General Motors and Stellantis will be called to stand up and strike,” Shawn Fain, president of the UAW, said in the announcement. “We will be striking 38 locations across 20 states, across all 9 regions of the UAW.” (Read more)
- Father, as this strike drags on, we pray against the economic repercussions for all Americans. We ask for a resolution to this problem, and that You would be merciful to mitigate any damage to the US economy.
- “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

8. CBP Says Three Migrants Arrived To Border With Tuberculosis: REPORT - Daily Caller
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources confirmed Friday three migrants arrived at the border in El Paso with tuberculosis, according to Griff Jenkins of Fox News.
“BREAKING: CBP sources confirm to FOX News that there are ** three confirmed cases of Tuberculosis ** among migrants in the El Paso sector… further complicating the already daunting task of managing an overwhelming number arriving daily,” Jenkins, a national correspondent for Fox News, wrote on Twitter.
Although there has been a surge in illegal immigration since the end of Title 42 in May, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claimed Biden is “stopping the flow at the border” during an August press conference. The Trump-era expulsion policy turned away asylum seekers at the border if there was a “serious danger to the introduction of [a communicable] disease into the United States.” (Read more)

Tropical Storm Ophelia made landfall in coastal North Carolina Saturday morning near hurricane-force strength, lashing a large swath of the mid-Atlantic coast with blistering winds, heavy rains and dangerous storm surge.
The center of Ophelia reached Emerald Isle around 6:15 a.m. ET with maximum winds estimated at 70 mph– just a few mph short of reaching hurricane status, according to the NHC.

Netanyahu tells UN that Israel ‘at the cusp’ of historic peace with Saudi Arabia
|
|
|
With Saudi diplomat in attendance, PM offers vision of ‘new Middle East’ and AI-enabled future, but ignores bitter fight over judicial overhaul back home and on NYC streets.
|
|
NEW YORK — Taking the stage Friday at the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel is “at the cusp” of a historic peace agreement with Saudi Arabia, a deal he predicted will transform the Middle East.
“Such a peace will go a long way to ending the Arab-Israeli conflict,” said Netanyahu, addressing the gathering for the 12th time. “It will encourage other Arab states to normalize their relations with Israel. It will enhance the prospects of peace with the Palestinians. It will encourage a broader reconciliation between Judaism and Islam, between Jerusalem and Mecca, between the descendants of Isaac and the descendants of Ishmael. All these are tremendous blessings.”
Netanyahu framed his address in biblical terms, presenting the future as a choice between a blessing and a curse. He used a similar approach while discussing artificial intelligence with Elon Musk earlier this week.
“Peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia will truly create a new Middle East,” Netanyahu said to applause from dozens of Jews and Israelis in the gallery who came to show their support.
The hall was largely empty on the last morning of the confab, but in another encouraging sign for Netanyahu, a lone Saudi official wearing a black head covering sat listening to the entire speech.
The Prime Minister’s Office made a point to send out a photo of the diplomat to Israeli reporters. (Times of Israel) Read more)

Heavenly Father, your word says: “Lord, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us” (Isaiah 26:12). We pray for the peace of Jerusalem and all who dwell in your land. And we pray for the Prince of Peace to come and establish His everlasting peace over all the earth. Sample of Empire State Building-sized asteroid
set to crash down in Utah desert
|
|
After spending over seven years in space and traveling nearly 4 billion miles, a capsule containing precious asteroid samples will return to Earth on Sunday.
NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft — which stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer — launched in 2016 to conduct the agency's first mission to gather material from an asteroid in space. A capsule containing nearly 9 ounces of rocks, dust and dirt collected from an asteroid named Bennu will detach from OSIRIS-REx before its expected crash inside the Defense Department's Utah Test and Training Range, where teams from NASA and Lockheed Martin, which built the vehicle, will be awaiting its arrival.
"It's like putting a dart board at the one end of a basketball court and throwing the dart from the other end and getting a bull's-eye," OSIRIS-REx Deputy Project Manager Michael Moreau recently told FOX Weather. "That's what we do."
The yearslong mission will help scientists investigate how planets are formed, give insights into how life began and improve NASA's understanding of asteroids that could come into contact with Earth. The sample will "give generations of scientists a window into the time when the Sun and planets were forming about 4.5 billion years ago," according to NASA. Read More

Revival Flames Burn Brightly in North Carolina:
282 Baptized at Church Service and Outdoor Event
|
|
Almost 300 people were baptized Sunday at morning worship services and at a planned outdoor event hosted by one Arden, North Carolina church. The Biltmore Church, a Baptist megachurch with seven campuses across the Tar Heel State, hosted an outdoor lake baptism event that had hundreds of people responding to the gospel call. "Outdoor Baptism is something we do annually and we have been announcing it for about six weeks to our congregation. While we were amazed by the number of those who were baptized we know that God has the power to do incredible things," the church said. Lead Pastor Bruce Frank posted the results of both morning services and the outdoor baptism event. "Seeing 279 people profess Jesus as Lord through our annual Outdoor Baptism was incredible! I’m always amazed as I hear all of the stories of God at work in each person’s life,"
Pastor Frank told CBN News in a statement. "Baptism is a great step for a Christ-follower, and our staff is excited to continue to guide each person as they continue their discipleship journey." Meanwhile, baptisms of college students are on the rise at two different universities. As CBN News reported last week, a Texas youth pastor says an outpouring of revival is taking place among college students at Texas A&M Corpus Christi and it shows "no signs of slowing down" as hundreds have already given their lives to Jesus and others are getting water baptized almost daily. Tarik Whitmore, the young adult pastor at New Life Church in Corpus Christi, Texas, told CBN News he is seeing a movement among college students who are getting saved and then boldly proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ with the student body. The result is a campus being transformed for Jesus – and it is happening quickly. (CBN) Read More

Words and Music: Charles Gabriel
Scripture: He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13:5
Lyrics:
There’s One who can comfort when all else fails,
Jesus, blessèd Jesus;
A Savior who saves tho’ the foe assails,
Jesus, blessèd Jesus:
Once He traveled the way we go,
Felt the pangs of deceit and woe;
Who more perfectly then can know,
Than Jesus, blessèd Jesus?
He heareth the cry of the soul distressed,
Jesus, blessèd Jesus;
He healeth the wounded, He giveth rest,
Jesus, blessèd Jesus:
When from loved ones we’re called to part,
When the tears in our anguish start,
None can comfort the breaking heart,
Like Jesus, blessèd Jesus.
He never forsakes in the darkest hour,
Jesus, blessèd Jesus;
His arm is around us with keeping power,So
Jesus, blessèd Jesus:
When we enter the shadow land
When at Jordan we trembling stand,
He will meet us with outstretched hand,
This Jesus, blessèd Jesus.
What joy it will be when we see His face,
Jesus, blessèd Jesus;
Forever to sing of His love and grace,
Jesus, blessèd Jesus:
There at home on that shining shore,
With the loved ones gone on before,
We will praise Him forevermore,
Our Jesus, blessèd Jesus.
