Supreme Court Rejects Republican Effort to Empower State Lawmakers in Making Election Rules
|
|
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6–3 against North Carolina Republicans who argued that state legislatures have sweeping authority to make the rules for federal elections in the states without interference from the courts.
At issue is the once-obscure independent state legislature doctrine, under which Republicans argue that the Constitution has always directly authorized state legislatures alone to make rules for the conduct of federal elections in their respective states.
Democrats say this doctrine is a fringe conservative legal theory that could endanger voting rights, enable extreme partisan gerrymandering in the redistricting process, and cause upheaval in election administration.
Conservatives point to two key clauses in the U.S. Constitution that lay out the rules governing federal elections in the states.
The Elections Clause in Article 1 states, “The times, places and manner of holding elections for senators and representatives, shall be prescribed in each state by the legislature thereof.”
The Presidential Electors Clause in Article 2 gives each state the power to appoint presidential electors “in such manner as the legislature thereof may direct.”
But the Court rejected the doctrine, finding that the Elections Clause does not vest exclusive, independent authority in state legislatures to set the rules regarding federal elections. (The Epoch Times) Read more here.

DeSantis Pledges Action, and Lots of It, at the Nation’s Borders

Ron DeSantis rolled out a detailed plan to secure the nation’s borders, something he’s said he’ll begin implementing on the first day of his presidency—if elected.
Speaking in Eagle Pass, Texas—on the Rio Grande River on June 26—the Florida governor and candidate for the Republican nomination touted a plan listing 35 actions he commits to taking under subheadings like “Stop the Invasion,” “Build the Wall,” “Hold Cartels Accountable” and “Work With States to Enforce the Law.”
His pledges include everything from tightening up on “catch-and-release” and other abused policies—to deploying the military at the border and, if necessary, into Mexican territory to stop cartel activity.
He says he’ll use the Navy and Coast Guard to stop the importation of fentanyl precursor chemicals into Mexico if the latter doesn’t cooperate in cracking down on it.
In a speech to supporters and a press conference afterward with the river behind him, accompanied by U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), DeSantis came back again to the many woes of the southern border: Fentanyl surging into the country and causing drug overdose deaths. Crime committed by illegal aliens. An overbroad system for allowing “asylum.”
Children are used as pawns to help unrelated adults enter the United States.
A court system releasing illegal immigrants into the nation with court dates that they usually skip, set years in advance.
The violence along the border itself. An overtaxed Border Patrol and Coast Guard inadequately supported by the Biden administration.
He told his Texas audience that while some seek to pigeonhole the border crisis as a Texas or Arizona problem, “When you don’t have control of your own border, that’s an American problem.”

EXCLUSIVE: US Bid to Rejoin UN Education Agency Could Be Derailed by House GOP
|
|
Despite an ongoing scandal involving the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) leadership and the agency’s decision to flout U.S. law by admitting the “State of Palestine” as a member state, the United States is now formally seeking to rejoin.
However, lawmakers may scuttle the effort by refusing to provide necessary funding.
If it moves forward, rejoining the U.N. education and culture agency is expected to cost U.S. taxpayers more than half a billion dollars just to rejoin, with additional funding expected each year going forward.
There has been some criticism in Congress already. And congressional appropriators dealing with foreign operations and State Department funding have vowed to terminate funding for UNESCO in the 2024 budget.
The Biden administration and defenders of the move argue that rejoining the agency would help counter the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Father God, President Biden has done very little to stand against the CCP even when it endangers our country. There has been silence from the Regime since it was reported that the CCP had and is continuing to establish military bases in Cuba! Nothing said, nothing done to protect us. Why would anyone believe that rejoining this organization, which would cost the US millions of dollars, would in any way change this type of response from our President?
Lord, we thank you for those in the GOP and elsewhere who have already taken a stand against this plan by vowing to refuse funding or to defund UNESCO in the 2024 budget if needed. We ask you to touch the hearts of those in our Congress and regular citizens. Father, let your voice stir our hearts and embolden us to take a stand against this plan, to create such an outcry that this will never come to fruition.
We ask that you continue to shine your light on actions being taken by this Administration revealing the truth of their hearts, actions that put other countries first and the US last, actions that continue to put our nation into more and more debt. Father God, we ask you to release your warrior angels to defend our nation when our own President won't. We ask this in the name El Gibhor, God Almighty! AMEN!

Trump changes tune on abortion, says US gov’t has ‘vital role’ to play in protecting ‘unborn life’

WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — Former U.S. President Donald Trump now believes the federal government has a role to play in regulating abortion, a departure from previous remarks expressing a desire that the issue be resolved at the state level.
“There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life,” Trump unexpectedly announced Saturday night at the Evangelical Faith & Freedom Coalition’s annual conference in Washington DC. “We will bring everybody together to protect our precious unborn babies in a very, very big way.”
Trump’s remarks come after several months of refusing to commit to a national abortion policy. “We’re going to look at it,” he told a reporter in May who pressed him on whether he supports a 15-week ban. It’s a “very complex issue,” he explained to liberal CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins during a town hall a week later.
Trump’s campaign previously said that abortion should be a “state’s only” issue, infuriating pro-lifers at the time. “Trump has DISQUALIFIED himself from the nomination of our nation’s pro-life political party,” Lila Rose of Live Action tweeted. It’s “morally indefensible,” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America president Marjorie Dannenfelser said. She later had a meeting with Trump and GOP Senator Lindsey Graham that she described as “terrific.”

1. Netanyahu set to visit China next month, in trip seen likely to annoy Biden - Times of Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit China next month, signaling growing impatience with Washington, as Beijing increasingly throws its weight around in the region, Israeli sources said Monday.
While there, the premier is slated to meet with President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders. Advanced contacts have been held in recent days between the two leaders’ offices to arrange the visit, the sources said.
No dates for the trip were given and no plans for a visit have been announced by Jerusalem or Washington. The Prime Minister’s Office said it had “no comment at present” when contacted. The Chinese embassy in Tel Aviv did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.

2. Netanyahu: PA cannot be allowed to collapse - JNS.org
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a Knesset panel recently that the Palestinian Authority “could not be allowed” to collapse, but that Palestinians’ desire for an independent state “must be cut off.”
The premier made the remarks in a closed-door meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chaired by MK Yuli Edelstein of Netanyahu’s Likud party, according to Kan News.
He also said that Israel was making preparations for “the day after Abu Mazen,” in reference to octogenarian P.A. chairman Mahmoud Abbas, who is now in the eighteenth year of a four-year term as P.A. president.
The Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar reported earlier this month that Abbas’s health has deteriorated and that he may not be able to fulfill his duties, although he recently returned from a diplomatic visit to China.
Abbas has not named a successor, and Palestinian polling shows strong support for the Gaza-based terror group Hamas and negative views of Abbas and his Fatah party.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday revealed that Israel has seized digital wallets linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force and the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group, confiscating millions of dollars in cryptocurrency.
Speaking at a conference hosted by the ministry’s National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing (NBCTF), Gallant said the operation several days ago was the first of its kind against cryptocurrency assets linked to the IRGC and Lebanon’s Hezbollah terror group. Israel in the past has seized dozens of digital wallets linked to the Hamas terror group.
“A few days ago, an extensive and precedent-setting operation — to expose a route for financing terror with digital currencies — was wrapped up. LGBTQ activists defended drag queen marchers who chanted “We’re coming for your children” — a chant they claim has been used for years, according to a report.
NBC News published a story Tuesday on how LGBTQ activists claim the chant, which was recorded at the New York City drag queen parade in June, was “taken out of context.”
It’s all just words,” Brian Griffin, the original organizer of the New York City drag queen parade, told NBC News. “It’s all presented to fulfill their worst stereotypes of us.”

The Defense Department memo on Iran — at the heart of the now-public audio recording that captured a July 2021 meeting with former President Donald Trump — is not part of the 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information charged in special counsel Jack Smith's indictment of the former president, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to CBS News.
In the recording of the meeting at Trump's Bedminster, New Jersey golf club, the former president can be heard apparently showing and discussing what he described as "highly confidential, secret" documents with aides. Sources say the documents were related to plans for a potential U.S. attack on Iran.
Smith's 37-count indictment against Trump includes 31 charges of willfully retaining national defense information. It generally outlines each of the 31 classified records that prosecutors allege Trump illegally kept, without naming the exact subject matter. 6. Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani interviewed in Jan. 6 investigation - AOL News
Rudy Giuliani, who as a member of Donald Trump's legal team sought to overturn 2020 presidential election results in battleground states, was interviewed recently by investigators with the Justice Department special counsel's office.
A spokesman for Giuliani confirmed he met with the special counsel. "The appearance was entirely voluntary and conducted in a professional manner," Ted Goodman said in a statement.
A person familiar with the matter said the interview was not done before a grand jury. The person, who insisted on anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation, would not say what questions investigators asked.
The interview is an additional sign of busy investigative activity by special counsel Jack Smith as his team of prosecutors scrutinizes efforts by Trump and his allies to undo the results of the election in the weeks before the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. (Read more)

7. Federal debt will rise to 107% of GDP by 2029, CBO projects - Washington Examiner
The Congressional Budget Office projected Wednesday that public debt will balloon to 107% of the country’s gross domestic product by 2029 and a whopping 181% by 2053.
The CBO, Congress's nonpartisan group of budget experts, released its long-term projections on Wednesday. The new report highlights the magnitude of the fiscal challenges facing Congress and President Joe Biden.
“The United States faces a challenging fiscal outlook. If current laws generally remained unchanged, budget deficits and federal debt would grow in relation to gross domestic product over the next three decades,” the CBO said. (Read more)

In November 1969, Credence Clearwater Revival released the song Fortunate Son. Lead singer John Fogerty says the song was birthed out of extreme distrust of executive authority. The second verse reads: “Some folks are born silver spoon in hand; Lord, don’t they help themselves, no; But when the taxman come’ to the door; Lord, the house lookin’ like a rummage sale, yeah.” And the chorus: “It ain’t me, it ain’t me; I ain’t no senator’s son, son; It ain’t me, it ain’t me; I ain’t no fortunate one, no.” Well, it may not be fortunate for you and me when the taxman comes a knockin’ at the door, but for Joe Biden’s son Hunter, he got the IRS deal of the century. Slap on the wrist for income tax evasion. Go figure.
The Big Guy’s boy comes out as the fortunate son after the IRS completed its criminal investigation. Hunter copped a plea deal to avoid prison. A Justice Department letter confirmed that the fortunate son would be pleading guilty to two counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax. Biden owed in excess of $200,000 on over $3 million income from 2017 and 2018. He also plead guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm. I wonder how that made the Big Guy feel given his strong desire to disarm every American citizen. Court docs say there is a maximum sentence for each count of “12 months in prison, a fine of $100,000, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense, whichever is greater; 1 year of supervised release, restitution, a $25 special assessment, cost of prosecution.” That would be for you and me, not the fortunate son. Mark Levin called for Trump’s attorneys to immediate file a motion to toss the case due to prosecutorial leaks and misconduct.
Mark Levin: There must have been several scores of leaks against Trump involving testimony, documents, audio, etc., and they’re all obviously coming from the government. Trump’s lawyers need to file an immediate motion, with the long list of leaks as an exhibit, asking that the entire case be dismissed because of prosecutorial misconduct and the government’s effort to influence the jury pool. WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — Former President Donald Trump unleashed a blistering attack on his political opponents this past weekend at the annual Faith & Freedom conference in Washington, D.C. Excoriating everyone from Joe Biden and left-wing Democrats to corrupt members of the Deep State, the former president held nothing back while defending Christian Americans.
“Our enemies are waging war on faith and freedom, on science and religion, on history and tradition, on law and democracy, on God Almighty Himself they are waging war,” he exclaimed. “That’s not a war they’re going to win.”
“The radicals are setting fire to our Constitution, abolishing free speech, attacking religious belief, erasing our borders, corrupting our elections … and trying to impose their blasphemous creed of woke communism on every American man, woman, and child,” he continued.
Trump notably announced a shift in his public stance on abortion at the conference. “There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life,” he said Saturday, reversing previous remarks expressing support for abortion as a “states only” issue. (Read more)

Earth's neighbors are performing a celestial dance in the evening sky that will reach its pinnacle this weekend below a well-known constellation.
July will kick off with a pairing of planets, the opening act of a month packed with astronomy events including a supermoon and dueling meteor showers.
On Saturday evening, Venus and Mars will glow side-by-side in an astronomical event known as a conjunction. This will be the closest the two planets have appeared in the night sky since March 2022 — and they will not appear this close again until next February.
It will be easy to spot the duo in the western sky below Leo, a constellation named after the legendary Nemean Lion from Greek mythology. According to ancient mythology, the hero Hercules battled the monstrous lion a the start of his 12 labors.
Venus will be the keystone of the event, serving as a reference point for stargazers who have difficulty spotting Mars, which will appear significantly dimmer than its celestial counterpart.
While Venus will be bright enough to spot early in the evening, Mars may not be visible until about an hour after sunset, faintly glowing above and to the left of Venus. It will appear orange, helping the red planet stand apart from most of stars that appear white. Read More
