‘Raw Partisanship’: Republican Moves To Impeach Maine Secretary Of State After Trump Kicked Off Ballot

A Republican state representative has moved to impeach Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows after she announced that former President Donald Trump would be disqualified from her state’s presidential primary ballot.
State Rep. John Andrews (R-Paris) blasted Bellows’ decision, saying this week that the decision was an example of “raw partisanship” and that she had no authority to unilaterally remove Trump from the ballot. Bellows made her decision based on her belief that Trump violated the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause on January 6, 2021.
“I wish to file a Joint Order, or whichever is the proper parliamentary mechanism under Mason’s Rules, to impeach Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. I wish to impeach Secretary Bellows on the grounds that she is barring an American citizen and 45th President of the United States, who is convicted of no crime or impeachment, their right to appear on a Maine Republican Primary ballot,” Andrews said.
“Donald J. Trump has met all qualifications for the March 2024 Republican Presidential Primary. He should be allowed on the ballot. This is raw partisanship and has no place in the offices of our state’s Constitutional Officers,” he added.
Bellows, a Democrat, rejected a bid by Trump’s legal team to get her to recuse herself from making a ruling on his eligibility amid multiple challenges to his candidacy. Andrews said that Bellows’ move was in part motivated in order to raise her ID for the Maine’s governor’s race in 2026. (Daily Wire) Read more here.

GOP Senators Introduce Bill That Would Punish States Who Disqualify Trump From 2024 Ballot
|
|
Republican senators are planning revenge against states that attempt to disqualify former President Trump from the 2024 ballot.
After Maine became the second state to boot Trump off the state’s ballot, a group of lawmakers have introduced legislation that would punish states who opt to take similar action.
“New law… If any state in our Union blocks the official nominee of a major political party from the Presidential ballot, their electoral slate will not be counted by Congress on the following January 6th,” Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) wrote in an X. “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
Maine Senator Susan Collins also echoed Higgins's efforts to hold states accountable if they violate constitutional rights.
“The Secretary of State’s decision would deny thousands of Mainers the opportunity to vote for the candidate of their choice, and it should be overturned,” Collins tweeted. “Maine voters should decide who wins the election – not a Secretary of State chosen by the Legislature.” (Town Hall) Read more here.

Jack Smith disputes Trump's presidential immunity claim in appeals court

U.S. Department of Justice Special Counsel Jack Smith has filed an argument disputing President Trump's claim to presidential immunity amid his 2020 election interference case.
The document was filed Saturday in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
The intent of the filing was to ask for the "review of the order of the district court (Chutkan, J.) denying his motions to dismiss based on Presidential immunity and principles of double jeopardy."
"Immunity from criminal prosecution would be particularly dangerous where, as here, the former President is alleged to have engaged in criminal conduct aimed at overturning the results of [an] election," Smith wrote in the filing. (Fox News) Read more here.

1. 5 IDF reservists injured in Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel - Israel National News
Earlier today (Monday), a number of launches from Lebanon toward the area of Adamit in northern Israel were identified. As a result of the launches, five IDF reservists were lightly injured. The soldiers were evacuated to a hospital to receive medical treatment and their families have been notified.
The IDF Aerial Defense Array successfully intercepted a suspicious aerial target that crossed from Lebanon. The sirens that sounded in the city of Kiryat Shmona in northern Israel were a result of the interception.
Over the last few hours, IDF soldiers, IAF fighter jets, and aircraft struck a series of targets in Lebanon, including terrorist infrastructure, military sites in which Hezbollah terrorists were operating, and launch posts. The IDF also struck a terrorist cell operating in the area of Houla. (Read more)

Israel's Supreme Court on Monday struck down a key component of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's contentious judicial overhaul, delivering a landmark decision that threatens to reopen the fissures in Israeli society that preceded the country's ongoing war against Hamas. The planned overhaul sparked months of mass protests, threatened to trigger a constitutional crisis between the judicial and legislative branches of government, and rattled the cohesion of the powerful military.
Those divisions were largely put aside after Hamas militants carried out a bloody cross-border attack in southern Israel on Oct. 7, triggering a war that has raged in Gaza for nearly three months. But Monday's court decision could reignite those tensions, even while the country remains at war. Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a Netanyahu ally and the architect of the overhaul, lambasted the court's decision, saying it demonstrated "the opposite of the spirit of unity required these days for the success of our soldiers on the front."
The ruling "will not discourage us," Levin said without indicating whether the government would try to revive his plan in the short term. "As the campaigns are continuing on different fronts, we will continue to act with restraint and responsibility," he said. In Monday's decision, the court narrowly voted to overturn a law passed in July that prevents judges from striking down government decisions they deem "unreasonable." Opponents had argued that Netanyahu's efforts to remove the standard of reasonability opens the door to corruption and improper appointments of unqualified cronies to important positions.

3. Israel to Pull Some Troops From Gaza as War Enters New Phase - Algemeiner
Israel is withdrawing some forces from Gaza to shift to more targeted operations against Hamas, and is partially returning reservists to civilian life to help the economy as the war looks set to last well into the new year, an Israeli official said.
The official said toppling the Islamist terror group remained an objective of the offensive in the Palestinian enclave, and that some of the five brigades withdrawn will prepare for a possible flare-up of a second front against Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terror group based in Lebanon.
Since responding to the cross-border Hamas rampage of Oct. 7, Israeli officials have said they would wage their military campaign in three main stages. The first was intense shelling to clear access routes for ground forces and encourage civilians to evacuate. The second was the ground offensive that began on Oct. 27. (Read more)

4. IDF secures border with Jordan to halt Iran-backed arms smuggling, potential invasion - Israel Hayom
The IDF is increasing security along Israel’s border with Jordan to prevent further arms smuggling and to prevent Iran-backed terrorattacks in the area, including possible invasion of Israeli towns, as reported by Israel Hayom.
According to reports, IDF’s Central Command is preparing for a scenario in which Iranian-supported terror organizations such as Hezbollah could break through and invade communities on the border.
Along Israel’s eastern border with Jordan, which stretches 309 km and is Israel’s longest, there has been significant arms smuggling activity into Judea and Samaria.
The IDF has recovered 1,000 weapons that were illegally brought in, including those that were clearly made in Iran. (Read more)

5. IDF finds Hamas bodycam footage of 'civilians' carrying RPGs - Jerusalem Post
The IDF's 401st Brigade has been operating against Hamas's Daraj Tuffah Battalion in the northern Gaza Strip over the last week. The soldiers conducted targeted raids on military posts and the residences of senior officials and neutralized dozens of anti-tank missile cells.
Soldiers from the Shaked Battalion, based on intelligence on the presence of a terrorist cell in a building, scanned the area and conducted a targeted raid on the location. During the activity, soldiers encountered several Hamas terrorists and engaged in a firefight, which ended with the soldiers killing the terrorists.
Soldiers also uncovered a camera belonging to one of the terrorists who was killed, with footage showing Hamas’s operational methods. The footage shows a terrorist presenting himself as a civilian while hiding an RPG-type rocket under a blanket in a civilian area. This strategy, and the use of Gazan citizens as human shields, has been a well-recorded tactic of Hamas.

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that the agency is developing a program that will provide border crossers and illegal aliens released into the United States with photo ID cards.
For more than a year, Breitbart News has chronicled how DHS is planning to roll out a pilot program that will give border crossers and illegal aliens photo ID cards, similar to a driver’s license, upon their release into the United States interior from the southern border.
Now, DHS officials are seemingly confirming their plan to issue photo IDs to such border crossers and illegal aliens.
Buried in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) annual report, officials confirmed that they are planning to begin issuing the photo ID cards to border crossers and illegal aliens sometime this fiscal year. (Read more)

2 Ohio Governor Mike DeWine Vetoes SAFE Act, Girls’ Sports Protections – The Washington Stand
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) vetoed HB 68 at a Friday press conference, just before the end of his 10-day window to do so. Family Research Council President Tony Perkins responded that he was “disappointed in Gov. Mike DeWine for buying into the false narrative of those who are preying upon the sexual confusion of children.”
“Were House Bill 68 to become law, Ohio would be saying that the state, that the government, knows better what is medically best for a child than the two people who love that child the most: the parents,” said DeWine.
“Governor DeWine’s veto of the Ohio SAFE Act leaves kids open to the institutionalized child abuse called ‘gender affirming care,’ that is, giving experimental and harmful hormones and surgery,” Family Research Council’s Senior Fellow Walt Heyer told The Washington Stand. “Hormone therapy for children devalues them as young girls and boys as God designed them to be. Any of the surgical procedures applied for identity distress will only dehumanize them when they reach adulthood, sadly.” Heyer detransitioned 30 years ago and has personally experienced the devastating consequences of gender transition procedures. 3. House Democrat Caught Using Taxpayer Funds for Her Own Advantage – Townhall
Democrat Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) is under investigation for alleged campaign finance violations tied to her 2022 elections.
The House Committee on Ethics launched an investigation into Cherfilus-McCormick after a a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics and follows an earlier extension of the inquiry in November.
Earlier this week, the committee voted unanimously to begin an investigative subcommittee to find whether Cherfilus-McCormick violated campaign finance laws during either of her 2022 elections. They also will determine if she "failed to properly disclose required information on statements required to be filed with the House; and accepted voluntary services for official work from an individual not employed in her congressional office." 4. Iraq Works to Expel U.S. Forces After Iran-Backed Shiite Militia Attacks - Breitbart
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said on Thursday that his government is working to expel U.S. and allied troops. Iran-linked Shiite militias have relentlessly attacked American forces in Iraq since Hamas terrorists attacked Israel on October 7 and began the current Gaza war.
“We are in the process of reorganizing this relationship. With the presence of capable Iraqi forces, the Iraqi government is heading towards ending the presence of the international coalition forces,” Sudani said at a press conference with socialist Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Spain has some troops in Iraq, but the bulk of the foreign forces are Americans, nominally serving as advisers, trainers, and consultants to the Iraqi military.
Sanchez said his government would support “the unity, sovereignty, and stability of Iraq.” He also condemned Israel for its strikes in Gaza, a position Sudani applauded.
Sudani said his administration would respect “the legal authorization granted by previous governments” for the presence of foreign troops but criticized foreign forces for engaging in “military operations” that he rejected as a “violation of Iraqi sovereignty.”
The Iraqi prime minister was referring to belated U.S. retaliatory strikes against Shiite militia groups ordered by President Joe Biden after dozens of attacks on American troops. (Read more)

5. U.S. Navy Engages in Fight with Houthis, Sinking Three Boats and Killing Crews – Breitbart
U.S. Navy helicopters on Sunday sunk three Houthi boats, killing their crews, after the terrorists attempted to hijack a commercial vessel and were fired on in response to the besieged container ship’s distress call.
“On Dec. 31 at 6:30am (Sanaa time) the container ship MAERSK HANGZHOU issued a second distress call in less than 24 hours reporting being under attack by four Iranian-backed Houthi small boats. The small boats, originating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, fired crew served and small arms weapons at the MAERSK HANGZHOU, getting to within 20 meters of the vessel, and attempted to board the vessel. A contract embarked security team on the MAERSK HANZGHOU returned fire,” Central Command (Centcom) outlined in an issued statement.
“U.S. helicopters from the USS EISENHOWER (CVN 69) and GRAVELY (DDG 107) responded to the distress call and in the process of issuing verbal calls to the small boats, the small boats fired upon the U.S. helicopters with crew served weapons and small arms. The U.S. Navy helicopters returned fire in self-defense, sinking three of the four small boats, and killing the crews. The fourth boat fled the area. There was no damage to U.S. personnel or equipment,” Centcom said. (Read more)

6. Biden Admin Rolls Out Slew Of Regs Targeting Americans’ Appliances On Last Friday Of The Year – Daily Caller
The Department of Energy (DOE) finalized or proposed a bevy of regulatory actions cracking down on numerous appliances on Friday.
The DOE proposed new rules designed to promote “energy efficient” commercial fans and blowers, and also finalized energy efficiency standards for refrigerators and freezers, the agency announced Friday. The regulatory actions are the latest in a string of moves by the Biden administration intended to phase out a host of fossil fuel-powered appliances and replace them on the market with more energy efficient, and often electric, equivalents.
“Today’s announcement is a testament to the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to lowering utility costs for working families, which is helping to simultaneously strengthen energy independence and combat the climate crisis,” Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said of her agency’s actions. “DOE will continue to move quickly in 2024—together with our industry partners and stakeholders—to update and strengthen outdated energy efficiency standards, which is critical to innovation, more consumer options, and healthier communities.” (Read more)

7. Biden-Appointed Judge Blocks Iowa Law That Prohibited Sexually Explicit Books In The Classroom – Daily Caller
A federal judge on Friday temporarily blocked an Iowa law prohibiting schools from discussing gender identity and sexual orientation in elementary schools, according to multiple reports.
United States District Judge Stephen Locher of the Southern District of Iowa, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, also blocked provisions of the law that prohibited the use of sexually explicit books, the Des Moines Register reported. Locher allowed provisions requiring schools to inform parents about students who requested the use of different pronouns, according to The Associated Press
Schools had removed books from libraries following the legislation’s passage, which prompted lawsuits from an LGBT advocacy group, the Iowa State Education Association and Penguin Random House, according to the Register. (Read more)

8. Star Witness in Alvin Bragg's Case Against Trump Used AI to Write Legal Briefs, Cited Fake Court Cases - Daily Caller
Michael Cohen, a former attorney for former President Donald Trump, accused of citing cases that did not exist in an effort to end his supervised release, says he used Google Bard, a form of artificial intelligence (AI) to do so, according to legal documents.
Cohen’s admission to the use of AI came in a declaration filed by his attorneys Thursday after former President Barack Obama-appointed United States District Judge Jesse M. Furman of the Southern District of New York issued a show cause order on Dec. 12, ordering attorneys for Michael Cohen to provide copies of the decisions or to explain why Cohen’s attorneys should not face sanctions. “As far as the Court can tell, none of these cases exist,” Furman wrote in the order.
“The Court contacted the Clerk of the Court for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, who found no record of any of the three decisions,” Furman added.
Cohen was a star witness for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, testifying before the grand jury that issued an indictment against Trump on March 30 in a case centered around a $130,000 payout to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016, during Trump’s successful run for the White House. (Read more)

9. EXCLUSIVE: FBI Has Massive 15 Month Backlog On DNA Testing For Migrants, Unearthed Emails Show – Daily Caller
The FBI has a 15 month backlog on DNA testing for migrants and is running out of money to sustain the program, according to an internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) email chain reviewed by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) uses tests from the FBI, which then analyzes and stores them for federal border authorities, to test migrants 14 years old and older, according to the emails. FBI Director Christopher Wray previously raised concerns about the FBI’s ability to handle the “dramatic increase” in DNA samples given the migration surges in April, according to Voice of America.
“They [FBI] don’t have enough money to run the program which is a statutory requirement. They are still delivering kits and used to turn them around in 2 months, now they are looking at a 15 month backlog,” one CBP official said in the internal chain regarding its response to a Washington Post reporter working on a story regarding the DNA testing.
Federal authorities have recorded record flows of migrants crossing the southern border illegally in recent years, with roughly 2.2 million encounters in fiscal year 2022 and more than 2 million in fiscal year 2023, according to federal data. (Read more)

The Act Of Forgiveness

In 2012, Christian singer and songwriter Matthew West released the song “Forgiveness” that quickly rose to number two on the Hot Christian Songs chart. The song was inspired by a mother who forgave a drunk driver that killed her 20-year-old daughter. In it, West talks about the true liberty in forgiveness. He sings, “Help me now to do the impossible. Forgiveness. It’ll clear the bitterness away. It can even set a prisoner free. There is no end to what its power can do. So, let it go and be amazed by why you see through the eyes of grace. The prisoner that it really frees is you. Forgiveness. Forgiveness. Forgiveness. Forgiveness.” We all have had times where the hardest act is forgiveness. The Bible gives many examples.
Forgiveness can be informed by the story of Joseph, whose brothers were so jealous of him that they threw him in a pit and eventually he was sold into Egyptian slavery. To save themselves from famine, the brothers went to Egypt to buy food, where Joseph had been put in charge of all of Pharaoh’s dealings. Long story short, after testing the brothers, who didn’t recognize him after 20 years, Joseph gave them supplies as Joseph was the one responsible for managing the famine. After their father Jacob’s death, Joseph’s brothers feared that there might be pay back for the suffering they had caused him. They sent a message to Joseph that their father had given them an order before he died to ask Joseph to forgive them and not take revenge for the wickedness they had done to him. Read More

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber has opted to leave former President Donald Trump's name on the state's presidential primary ballot, despite calls from the state's lieutenant governor to remove him.
Weber, a Democrat, did not issue a comment after her office released the full list of certified candidates for the March 5 primary with Trump's name included on it.
Weber last week said her office would be guided by its "commitment to and respect for the rule of law" after Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis sent her an open letter calling for Trump's name to be excluded.
"Removing a candidate from the ballot under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment is not something my office takes lightly and is not as simple as the requirement that a person be at least 35 years old to be president," she added.
Gov. Gavin Newsom, also a Democrat, opposed removing Trump's name, saying he should be defeated at the polls.
"There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy, but in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction," Newsom said in a statement last week, reports Politico. (Newsmax) Read more here.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing an Oregon mother of five who wishes to adopt siblings under the age of 10 from foster care filed a notice of appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit Wednesday after a lower court ruled against her. Oregon state officials categorically excluded Jessica Bates from the adoption process because she refused to speak or act against her belief that boys and girls are biologically different and should cherish that difference, not reject it.
ADF attorneys are asking the 9th Circuit to allow Bates to access Oregon’s adoption system free of discrimination while her lawsuit continues so that she can provide a loving home to children in need.
“No state should abandon children in favor of a dangerous ideological agenda,” said ADF Legal Counsel Johannes Widmalm-Delphonse. “Jessica is a loving mother who feels called to adopt siblings under the age of 10 from foster care. But the state of Oregon is categorically excluding her from adopting any child because Jessica shares a view held by millions of Americans: that boys and girls are biologically different and should cherish that difference, not reject it.
Because Jessica will not promote Oregon’s radical gender ideology to children under the age of 10, the state considers her an unfit parent and has deprived hundreds, if not thousands, of children in Oregon’s system of the opportunity to be raised in a loving home. We urge the 9th Circuit to allow Jessica to continue her adoption journey and provide a loving home to children in need.”
Bates, who lost her husband in a car collision six years ago, is a mother of five children, ages 10 to 18. Inspired by the story of a man who adopted a child from foster care, Bates felt a calling to follow the biblical teaching to care for orphans. Massive earthquake hits western Japan, triggering tsunami warnings
|

Tokyo (CNN) — A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck western Japan on Monday afternoon, triggering tsunami alerts as far away as eastern Russia and prompting a warning for residents to evacuate affected coastal areas of Japan as soon as possible.
The earthquake struck at 4:10 p.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), around 42 kilometers (26 miles) northeast of Anamizu in Ishikawa prefecture, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The Japan Meteorological Agency immediately issued a tsunami warning along coastal regions of western Japan, and the first waves were reported hitting the coast just over 10 minutes later.
Some of the first reports came from the city of Wajima in Ishikawa prefecture, which saw tsunami waves of around 1.2 meters (3.9 feet) around 4:21 p.m., according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK. No immediate damage was reported.
Suzu city officials in Ishikawa told CNN that buildings have been damaged and there were reports of injuries. Police in the city said some people were trapped in damaged houses, according to NHK. No deaths have been reported so far. Read More

Christian Delegation from Africa Calls for Its Leaders to Move Embassies to Jerusalem

A delegation of Christian leaders from Africa visited Israel for a tour of solidarity this week, led by a bishop and a reverend from Kenya. President of the Africa-Israel Initiative, Bishop Joshua Mulinge and Africa's Director of the Israel Allies Foundation Reverend Dennis Nthumbi took the group to visit southern Israel border communities to meet with the families of hostages and survivors of the Oct. 7 invasion and brutal attack perpetrated by the Hamas terror organization and its accomplices. The delegation was joined by one of the Africa-Israel Initiatives representatives, Tor Arne Gard and Pastor Erik Selle, who founded the initiative in Johannesburg, South Africa in November 2011. They met with members of the Israeli Knesset to discuss the creation of opportunities for mutual support between Africa and Israel. While in Jerusalem, the Christian delegation ascended the Temple Mount together with Rabbi Yehudah Glick and Bishop Mulinge lifted a prayer: "May the nations of Africa unite and relocate their embassies to Jerusalem."
Nearly half of Africa's citizens are Christian, according to a 2022 report, however, the ongoing war in Gaza has shown that leaders are divided when it comes to supporting Israel. Many governments support the Palestinian cause, whereas, the nations that stand with Israel are primarily African countries with Christian leaders. Bishop Mulinge said he came to Israel to see for himself what happened on Oct. 7 and to tell the world what happened there. "Most of the world does not know what happened in Israel on October 7 and the pain that Israel is in," Mulinge said. "I came here to see what is not being said, so I can speak about it across Africa and reach out to the African diaspora on other continents. We can bring the side of the information the media often fails to portray." Mulinge said that while those who are against Israel do not speak for all of Africa, many pro-Israel groups have not yet learned the tools for defending Israel and therefore keep silent. "We will reach out to them, hold meetings based on facts, and give them a proper picture," he said. "This will help to lobby Africa for Israel. The Africa-Israel initiative was established to serve as a "two-way street of blessing between Africa and Israel," Selle explained.
