White House threatens to veto GOP bill that cuts $72B from IRS
|
|
The White House said Monday it would veto a bill that passed in the Republican majority House that would claw back $72 billion in funds used to hire tens of thousands of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) staff over the next decade.
Last year, Congress approved $80 billion in new funding for the IRS to hire staff as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, which President Biden signed into law last year. Republicans passed a bill Monday to take back most of this money, a move the White House said would help corporations and wealthy Americans cheat on their taxes. (Fox News) Read more.

|
|
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said he will keep his promise to block three headline-grabbing Democrats from their committee assignments in the 118th Congress.
McCarthy told Punchbowl News in an interview published Tuesday that he will act to prevent Reps. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., from sitting on the House Intelligence Committee. He will also seek to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
"Swalwell can’t get a security clearance in the private sector. I’m not going to give him a government security clearance," McCarthy said, echoing statements he made to Fox News in November. "Schiff has lied too many times to the American public. He should not be on Intel."
As for Omar, McCarthy has previously argued she should be stripped of her committee seat for her outspoken criticism of Israel, which critics say is borderline antisemitic. (Fox News) Read more.

Twitter users lambasted the state of modern air travel and directed blame at Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it had suffered a system failure.
On Wednesday morning, the FAA announced the agency was working to restore the Notice to Air Missions System, which had severely limited operations of the National Airspace System. After multiple hours, the system continued to produce errors before slowly coming back online around 9 a.m. ET.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said President Biden had been briefed on the incident and claimed there was no evidence that a cyber attack had crippled the FAA systems.
Twitter users, instead of pointing the finger at a foreign actor or human error, were quick to bash Buttigieg for the massive outage.
Biden addressed the FAA issue on Wednesday before leaving the White House. He said he had just been briefed by Buttigieg, who told him they still had not identified what went wrong.
"I just spoke to Buttigieg. They don’t know what the cause is. But I was on the phone with him about 10 minutes," Biden said. "I told him to report directly to me when they find out. Air traffic can still land safely, just not take off right now. We don’t know what the cause of it is."
At 8 a.m. ET, there were more than 2,500 delayed flights within, into or out of the U.S., according to the flight tracking website FlightAware, exceeding the number of all delayed flights on the previous day. More than 150 have been canceled, and those numbers are likely to grow. (Fox News) Read more.

1. Coalition MK calls for arrest of ‘treasonous’ opposition heads Lapid, Gantz - Times of Israel
A lawmaker from Itamar Ben Gvir’s extreme-right Otzma Yehudit party called Tuesday afternoon for the arrest of opposition leaders and two former MKs, accusing them of “treason against the state” and saying they “are the most dangerous people right now,” sparking widespread condemnation among the center-left and also, later Tuesday, from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
MK Zvika Fogel, a retired brigadier general in the Israel Defense Forces, made the remarks in an interview with the Kan public broadcaster, responding to comments by Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, National Unity party leader Benny Gantz and former MKs Yair Golan and Moshe Ya’alon against plans by the government to overhaul Israel’s judicial system.
“This is crazy. These four should be arrested. These are the most dangerous people right now,” he said. (Read more)

Ben-Gvir says that they will use water cannons against our demonstrators, MK Fogel says that Benny Gantz and I should be arrested and thrown in jail for treason because we spoke against the government and in Be'er Sheva they are trying to run over our students because they are demonstrating and using their right to freedom of expression."

The time has come for the US and Israel to formulate a common stand against Iran's nuclear weapons program, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday, as Strategic Affairs MinisterRon Dermer visited Washington.
"It's time to close ranks between Israel and the United States – and others,” Netanyahu said during a private video conference he held with the major pro-Israel group in Washington the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee.

5. Bill Re-Extending Israeli Laws to Citizens in Judea and Samaria Passes First Reading - Algemeiner
JNS.org – A bill seeking to apply Israeli criminal and various civil laws to communities located in Area C of Judea and Samaria passed its first reading in the Knesset on Tuesday.
The proposed legislation seeks to renew a set of “emergency” regulations enacted in the aftermath of the 1967 Six-Day War, meant to be reapproved every five years but which were last approved in 2017.
Israel’s previous government did not renew the regulations due to opposition from members of the coalition, specifically the left-wing Meretz and Islamist Ra’am parties.
However, they were automatically extended when the government fell in June, and remain in effect for three months after the date of the swearing-in of the new government. (Read more)

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) thanked President Joe Biden for halting the construction of border wall along the United States-Mexico border at a North American summit on Tuesday.
Alongside Biden and Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, AMLO praised Biden’s immediate halt to border wall construction along the southern border. The day after taking office, Biden signed an executive order that stopped all wall construction that had been underway by former President Trump.
Indeed, as Breitbart News has chronicled, the Biden administration has chosen to leave wide holes in the border wall, rendering the barrier useless in many circumstances for Border Patrol agents trying to reduce illegal immigration from Mexico. (Read more)

2. McCarthy, GOP, Dems unite behind new China committee - Fox News
House Republicans and Democrats on Tuesday joined forces and voted overwhelmingly in favor of a new committee to examine U.S. strategic competition with China, after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy declared on the House floor that neither Republicans nor Democrats trust China anymore.
"We spent decades passing policies that welcomed China into the global system," McCarthy said. "In return, China has exported oppression, aggression and anti-Americanism. Today, the power of its military and economy are growing at the expense of freedom and democracy worldwide."
"It didn’t start under this administration, but the current administration has clearly made it worse," he continued. "Its policies have weakened our economy and made us more vulnerable to the threat of the CCP [Chinese Communist Party]."

3. Pentagon drops COVID-19 vaccine mandate for troops - AP News
The Pentagon formally dropped its COVID-19 vaccination mandate Tuesday, but a new memo signed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also gives commanders some discretion in how or whether to deploy troops who are not vaccinated.
Austin’s memo has been widely anticipated ever since legislation signed into law on Dec. 23 gave him 30 days to rescind the mandate. The Defense Department had already stopped all related personnel actions, such as discharging troops who refused the shot.
“The Department will continue to promote and encourage COVID-19 vaccination for all service members,” Austin said in the memo. “Vaccination enhances operational readiness and protects the force.” (Read more)

4. Biden administration extends Covid public health emergency - CNBC News
The Biden administration has extended the Covid-19 public health emergency until April as a highly transmissible omicron subvariant stokes concern that the U.S. may face another wave of hospitalizations from the disease this winter.
“The COVID-19 Public Health Emergency remains in effect, and as HHS committed to earlier, we will provide a 60-day notice to states before any possible termination or expiration,” a spokesperson for the Health and Human Services Department said.
The U.S. has renewed the Covid public health emergency every 90 days since the Trump administration first issued the declaration in January 2020. (Read more)

6. Egg prices near $9 a dozen – bird flu outbreak, increased demand over meat as protein source - Just The News
Egg prices across the U.S. have soared in recent weeks, nearing $9 a dozen, largely the result of a large outbreak of avian influenza among birds.
The virus has affected over 57 million birds, mostly egg-laying chickens, since last year, according to Agriculture Department data.
Additionally, more families are increasingly relying on eggs as an important protein source while reducing their consumption of red meat, the agency also says.
The price of large eggs in New York is now as much as $8.79 a dozen, similar to those in Los Angeles, where chilled display cases are grocery stores are frequently empty. The problem is especially acute in California because of state laws protecting animals. (Read more)

7. Severe weather threat emerges in California - New York Post
The hits keep coming to California as the state deals with an onslaught of atmospheric river storms that has brought torrential rain and life threatening flooding, mudslides and debris flows to many parts of the state.
Widespread flooding was reported across California on Monday and Tuesday, with more than 300 reports of flooding coming into various National Weather Service offices across the state. While heavy rain drenched much of the Golden State; Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties were hit especially hard, with more than 15 inches of rain falling in higher elevations.
Several rivers also reported record-high water levels, including the Ventura, Salinas and Sisquoc rivers, as well as Sespe Creek.
Up to 10 inches of rain was also reported in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, especially in Fresno, Mariposa and Tulare counties. (Read more)

8. Biden Center at UPenn Received $54.6M from Anonymous Chinese Donations - Breitbart
At least $54 million has been donated by Chinese Communist Party-linked individuals or entities between 2014 and 2019 to the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington at the University of Pennsylvania, according to public records reported by the New York Post, where it was revealed this week that Biden had stashed a trove of classified documents.
The University of Pennsylvania has denied that the Penn Biden Center received any money from anonymous Chinese donations.
The Penn Biden Center’s source of funding is relevant because CNN reported on Tuesday that Biden’s stashed classified documents at Penn Biden Center pertain to Ukraine, Iran, and the United Kingdom.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the third highest ranking Republican House member, told Breitbart News that Biden’s classified stash at Penn Biden Center raises national security questions:
“The fact that former Vice President Joe Biden inappropriately maintained and kept classified materials at his unsecured think tank raises serious questions about national security, particularly when the documents were related to Ukraine when Biden family members were on a Ukrainian oligarch’s payroll. The President has declassification authority, not the then Vice President. It is troubling that these documents were turned over to the National Archives on November 2nd, right before the midterm elections, and the corrupt Biden DOJ covered it up for two months.” (Read more)

9. Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs Proposes $40M in Taxpayer Money for Illegal Aliens to Attend State Universities - Breitbart
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) is proposing a state-funded scholarship program, with $40 million in taxpayer money, to help illegal aliens attend state universities and colleges.
In her inaugural address, Hobbs vowed to expand the Arizona Promise Scholarship Program — which helps low-income students pay tuition and fees to attend universities — while creating the “Promise for DREAMers Scholarship Program” that will “cover all students, regardless of immigration status, who attend a public university.”
In effect, Hobbs’ initiative would spend $40 million to help funnel illegal aliens into limited spots at state universities and colleges. An estimated 2,000 illegal aliens would benefit from the initiative every school year. (Read more)

10. UK and Japan Sign Major Defence Deal Amid Rising Concern About Communist China - Breitbart
The leaders of Britain and Japan signed a defense agreement Wednesday that could see troops deployed to each others countries. The two countries are strengthening military ties amid growing concern about China’s increasing military assertiveness and designs toward Taiwan, which it considers a renegade province.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida formally signed the agreement in the symbolic setting of the Tower of London fortress. The British government said the it “cements our commitment to the Indo-Pacific” region.
The Reciprocal Access Agreement, Japan’s first defense agreement with a European nation, allows the two Group of Seven countries to hold joint military exercises. (Read more)

Stupidocrisy: Biden's Ban On Gas Stoves

I’ve just read several stories that rank among the highest in stupidity of modern man. In September, California’s clean air agency approved a proposal to ban new natural gas-fueled furnaces and water heaters in homes by 2030. The final vote won’t take place until 2025, but the stage is set. Now the Feds are jumping on board. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is opening up a comment period to set new emission standards which would lead to banning natural gas stoves. The California agency cites that natural gas in homes causes respiratory problems in some 12% of kids and that natural gas is a financial burden on low income citizens. Right? Gotta have that woke component these days.
In a September 22 statement, California Air Resources Board (CARB) Chair Liane Randolph said, “We need to take every action we can to deliver on our commitments to protect public health from the adverse impacts of air pollution, and this strategy identifies how we can do just that…While this strategy will clean the air for all Californians, it will also lead to reduced emissions in the many low-income and disadvantaged communities that experience greater levels of persistent air pollution.” By this, CARB intends to target natural gas vehicles, space heaters, water heaters and air conditioners. Stoves come in later in the plan. Wasn’t it just a few years ago they were converting everything to natural gas? Now the conversion goal is electric, which California can’t handle now with all its rolling blackouts. Read More

Joe Biden Aides Discover More Classified Documents at Separate Location

President Joe Biden’s aides have discovered more classified documents in his possession at a different location, according to a report from NBC News. The report does not say where or when the new documents were discovered, but it is clear the White House is attempting to clean up Biden’s records ahead of a possible run for reelection in 2024.
The newly discovered documents are from a location separate from the private office connected to a University of Pennsylvania think tank that Biden had in Washington, DC, where the first batch of classified information was discovered.
The White House has stonewalled any additional information about the documents that were first discovered just days before the 2022 midterm elections. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to even confirm whether Biden’s aides were searching his other properties to see if they contained classified documents. (Breitbart) Read more.

House Panel Launches Investigation Into Biden’s Classified Document Stash

The House Oversight Committee is opening an investigation into President Joe Biden’s handling of classified records from his time as vice president, following the discovery of sensitive materials in an insecure closet at a think tank.
Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) said in a Jan. 10 statement on social media that he’s launching the probe; he has demanded that the White House and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) provide documents and information related to their handling of the Biden records—including the classified documents themselves.
“The Committee is concerned that President Biden has compromised sources and methods with his own mishandling of classified documents,” Comer wrote in a letter to White House counsel Stuart Delery (pdf), while pointing out that Biden has previously called the mishandling of presidential records “totally irresponsible.”
A “small number” of classified documents were found on Nov. 2, 2022, in a locked closet at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington as Biden’s lawyers were clearing out the offices, according to a statement on Jan. 9 by Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president.
Sauber said the documents were in a “locked closet” at the think tank Biden used after he served as vice president and that the records were turned over to NARA a day after they were found.
For purposes of the committee probe, Comer requested that the White House provide a raft of information relating to the handling of the retrieved documents. He requested all the documents retrieved from Biden’s personal office at the Penn Biden Center, as well as all internal documents and communications regarding the recovered materials.
He’s also demanding a list of all the people who had access to Biden’s personal office at the think tank and all documents and communications between the White House and the Department of Justice (DOJ) or NARA regarding the classified document find.

Nearly 100,000 in California Are Under Evacuation Orders or Warnings
|

|
Almost 49,000 people were under evacuation orders and another 50,000 were under evacuation warnings across California on Tuesday morning, state officials said in their first official accounting of the state of the latest storm.
More than 220,000 utility customers were without power in the state, according to Brian Ferguson, a spokesman for the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
The oceanside counties of Santa Cruz, Monterey and Santa Barbara, all of which lie between San Francisco and Los Angeles, have borne the brunt of the impact so far.
In Monterey County, flooding that began Monday has forced evacuations along the Carmel and Salinas rivers, Mr. Ferguson said. In Santa Cruz County, the wind, rain and tides have battered buildings and infrastructure along the beaches.

Strongest atmospheric river yet slams California
with deadly impacts
|

The tumultuous start to the year for California continued on Monday and Tuesday as the strongest in a series of storms tapped into a firehose of moisture and spawned deadly flooding, damaging mudslides and even tornado warnings.
Millions of storm-weary people across California faced another round of life-threatening weather to start the week as an atmospheric river unloaded more than a month's worth of rain in one day, which sparked flash floods, rockslides and avalanches.
The early-week storm is the latest of a line of storms that have pummeled California since New Year's Eve. More than a dozen storm-related fatalities have been reported across the state since the end of 2022, which is higher than the death toll from wildfires in California over the past two years.
At least three storm-related deaths were reported from the latest system, including one woman who was killed Monday in Avila Beach, located 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles, after her vehicle was overtaken by water. Two more fatalities were confirmed Tuesday after a large tree fell on two vehicles on Highway 99 near Visalia, California, killing both of the drivers.
A 5-year-old boy is also missing after he was swept away by floodwaters Monday near San Miguel, located 130 miles southeast of San Jose. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Tuesday evening that the search for Kyle Doan had concluded due to low visibility but would resume first thing Wednesday morning. 88 Percent of 118th Congress Are Christians, Report Finds
|

The 118th U.S. Congress has more Baptists than any other Protestant denomination, according to a Pew Research analysis. The analysis showed that among the 534 members of Congress, some 88 percent are Christian. That’s more than the general population of the U.S., where 63 percent say they are Christian, Baptist News Global reports. Only one member of Congress — Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, identifies as religiously unaffiliated. Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman of California identifies himself as a humanist, and 20 others (3.7 percent) did not disclose their religious affiliations.
Protestants make up 57 percent of Congress, while Catholics account for 28 percent and Jews account for six percent. For the first time in eight years, the number of Protestants in Congress today is at its highest. The new Congress has 148 Catholics, 10 fewer than the 117th Congress. Nearly three-in-ten U.S. adults say they are religiously unaffiliated, describing themselves as atheists, agnostics or “nothing in particular.” Some 16 years ago, that number was 16 percent.
