Republican Senators Push Back Against Accord Giving WHO Power Over US Pandemic Response
|
|
As member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) prepare to gather in Switzerland next week to negotiate final terms of an accord that will give the WHO centralized authority over U.S. policy in the case of a pandemic, Republican senators are pushing back with an effort to reinforce congressional power to authorize treaties.
The draft accord, which would be “legally binding” on all 194 member nations, gives the WHO the authority to declare pandemics and submits member countries to “the central role of the WHO as the directing and coordinating authority on international health work,” in areas like lockdowns, treatments, medical supply chains, surveillance, and “disinformation and false news,” once a pandemic is declared.
Seventeen U.S. senators, led by Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), introduced the “No WHO Pandemic Preparedness Treaty Without Senate Approval Act” on Feb 15, which states that the pandemic accord must be deemed a treaty, thus requiring the consent of a supermajority of the Senate, which is two-thirds, or 67 senators. The legislation comes as the WHO gears up to present what it calls the “zero draft” of the accord, negotiated with the help of U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, to all member nations on Feb. 27 to agree final terms.
Other sponsors of the bill included Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), and Katie Britt (R-Ala.).
“The WHO, along with our federal health agencies, failed miserably in their response to COVID-19,” Sen. Johnson stated. “This failure should not be rewarded with a new international treaty that would increase the WHO’s power at the expense of American sovereignty.”
But some doubt this bill, even if approved, will stop the WHO accord from going into effect once President Joe Biden signs it. (Read more here)

Senate Republicans Introduce Legislation Prohibiting IRS From Conducting Financial Surveillance on Private Citizens
|
|
Thirty-one of the Senate’s 49 Republicans are co-sponsoring a bill to nullify a Biden administration proposal by banning the IRS from conducting surveillance on the financial affairs of virtually all individual Americans.
The lead co-sponsors of the “Prohibiting IRS Financial Surveillance Act” include Sens. John Boozman and Tom Cotton, both from Arkansas, as well as Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee Ranking Member Tim Scott (R-S.C.).
The proposal prohibits the secretary of the Department of the Treasury from tracking “the inflows or outflows of any account maintained by such institution, or (2) any balances, transactions, transfers, or similar information with respect to any such account.”
The proposal qualifies the prohibition “except to the extent that such reporting is required under any program, or other provision of law, as in effect on the date of the enactment of this Act.” Since the IRS already can summon financial transaction records for purposes of a tax audit, the Senate Republicans’ proposal wouldn’t limit the tax agency’s power in such instances, but it would prohibit future expansions beyond auditing.
“The IRS has failed to secure private information and often struggles to provide basic customer service to the millions of American taxpayers it’s accountable to and was designed to serve. It has no business attempting to monitor their every bank transaction and requiring financial institutions to turn over this data. Our bill would ensure the agency stays out of innocent Americans’ personal finances,” Boozman said in a Feb. 22 joint statement. (Epoch Times) Read more here.

Fire Breaks out at Uranium Processing Facility in Tennessee, Latest in Spate of Fires Across US
|
|
Multiple emergency crews responded to a fire at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on Wednesday.
The federal facility had all its staff—some 200 employees—evacuated in response to the fire. Some employees in adjacent buildings were also evacuated.
The Y-12 National Security Complex was built as part of the Manhattan Project, a U.S. government research project during World War II, that produced the first nuclear weapons.
“At approximately 9:15 a.m., one of the Y-12 production buildings had a fire in a [chemical handling] hood,” the Y-12 National Security Complex said in a statement on Facebook.
It said in a separate statement, “Personnel have determined the event is contained to the production building,” adding that all evacuated employees “are accounted for” and that there are “no injuries or contaminations found.”
“There is no off-site impact to the public as a result of the incident,” it said. (Epoch Times)

1. Netanyahu: Israel is now main transit point between Asia and EU after Oman opens airspace- Israel National News
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today (Thursday) welcomed the authorization for Israeli planes to fly over Oman.
"The Far East is not so far away and the skies are no longer the limit. This is a day of great news for Israeli aviation. Israel has, in effect, become the main transit point between Asia and Europe," Netanyahu said.
"We have worked to open the airspace, first over Saudi Arabia, and from 2018 when I visited Oman, to add Oman as well so that we can fly directly to India and on to Australia. This was achieved today, after considerable effort, including in recent months. Here is good news – Israel is opening up to the east on an unprecedented scale." (Read more)

2. Gallant, Smotrich Reach Compromise on Running Judea and Samaria - Jewish Press
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Adjunct Minister in the Defense Ministry Bezalel Smotrich on Thursday signed an agreement in keeping with the coalition agreement between Likud and Religious Zionism, regulating the division of powers between them with regard to managing the liberated territories of Judea and Samaria.
According to the agreement, most of the powers of the Civil Administration in Judea and Samaria will be transferred to Smotrich, including the central supervision unit responsible for enforcing construction laws in the liberated territories. However, Gallant will have the authority to exercise enforcement against illegal construction defined as a “fresh incursion,” and demolishing it constitutes “security urgency.” Still, Smotrich must be informed ahead of such action.

3. Israel on alert along Gaza border following heavy clashes in Samaria - World Israel News
Israel is on high alert along the Gaza border amid concerns that Hamas will escalate tensions from heavy clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinian terror groups in Shechem (Nablus) on Wednesday.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that soldiers entered Shechem looking to arrest Husam Isleem and Muhammed al-Junaidi, who barricaded themselves inside a house.
Residents of the city were called to join the fighting in social media messages and announcements from local mosques. Footage posted on social media included the sounds of explosions and gunfire. (Read more)

4. Police raise alert following deadly IDF raid in Nablus, anticipating revenge attacks - Times of Israel
Police said Wednesday afternoon that they were raising their level of alert after 11 Palestinians were killed in exchanges of fire during a military raid in the West Bank city of Nablus in the morning hours. The Israel Defense Forces was also anticipating a potentially violent response to the deadly raid.
Palestinian terror groups said at least six of those killed were their operatives. It was not immediately clear whether the remaining five were involved in the clashes or not.
Police said the raising of the alert would include focusing additional security efforts in towns close to the West Bank security barrier, Jerusalem and additional central cities. (Read more)

5. Ministers to vote on death penalty for terrorists, incapacitation law Sunday - Jerusalem Post
The Ministerial Committee on Legislation will vote at its Sunday meeting on a law to block the attorney-general’s ability to announce that a prime minister is “incapacitated” from fulfilling his role, as well as on a law to introduce the death penalty for terrorists, according to the committee’s agenda that was published on Thursday.
According to the bill, which coalition whip and Likud MK Ofir Katz proposed along with faction leaders of all of the coalition parties on Sunday, the only bodies that are allowed to make such a declaration are the prime ministerhimself or at least three-quarters of the government’s ministers. If the prime minister does not agree with the government’s decision, the Knesset can remove him with a three-quarter majority of 90 MKs.
The bill is the coalition’s response to the High Court of Justice’s decision to hear an appeal by the Movement of Quality Government in Israel, over whether Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miarashould declare Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu incapable of serving in the position, due to conflicts of interest between the judicial reforms and his criminal trials. 1. Zelensky Delivers Blow to China's Russia-Ukraine Peace Plan - Newsweek
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a blow to China's plan to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine on Tuesday, just days before their war reached its one-year mark.
Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to deliver a "peace speech" before the United Nations on Friday—exactly one year after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Ukraine invasion. During his speech, he is expected to propose a plan to reach peace between the two countries, which continue to fight for control over eastern Ukrainian territory.
Details about the plan from Xi, who has expressed sympathy for Russia amid widespread backlash over the war, remain limited, but it is the latest sign of China working to become a major diplomatic player, despite tense ties with other world powers including the United States.
However, Xi's plan appears to lack support from Zelensky. During a press conference on Tuesday, the Ukrainian president appeared to dismiss any potential peace plan from Xi, according to Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda. 2. Russian bomber jets intercepted over Alaska by US air defense systems - Jerusalem Post
Multiple Russian military aircraft including fighter jets and strategic bombers were intercepted by North American air defense forces as they flew over international airspace near Alaska, US military said.
The aircraft, which were identified on February 13, did not enter United States or Canadian airspace and did not pose a threat, the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) said in a statement dated February 14.
It added that the Russian flights were in no way related to the mysterious spate of airborne objects shot down by the US military over North America in the past few weeks.
"NORAD had anticipated this Russian activity and, as a result of our planning, was prepared to intercept it... Two NORAD F-16 fighters intercepted the Russian aircraft," it said. (Read more)

3. U.S. diplomatic counter-offensive targets China’s ‘false information’ - POLITICO
The Biden administration is aggressively calling out Beijing’s surveillance program and warning of serious consequences if it aids Russia’s war on Ukraine.
“And rather than just owning up to what was pretty obvious for all to see, [Beijing] launched into a whole propaganda campaign that was pretty frustrating for the administration, especially given that they were heading into what would have been [Secretary of State Antony] Blinken’s first trip to Beijing.”
It started with the spy balloon. On Feb. 5 — the day after the U.S. shot down the Chinese surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina — the Biden administration sent out an “action request” to U.S. diplomatic posts across the globe telling them to push the message that China “is attempting to change the narrative by providing false information.”
The cable included 28 concise talking points for U.S. representatives from Brussels to Grenada and Frankfurt to Busan to share with foreign government officials “in private diplomatic engagements.” The U.S. had several key demands for Beijing, according to the cable, including that the airship “cease operations” and “immediately” leave U.S. airspace. 4. House Republican: Ukraine war has been wake-up call for Taiwan to stockpile weapons - The Hill
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) said in an interview that Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine has been a wake-up call for Taiwan to stockpile weapons as tensions with China continue to grow. In an interview with the Washington Post published Wednesday, Gallagher said that many Taiwanese officials he met during his trip told him about their concerns with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
“Almost every Taiwanese official I met with mentioned the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a wake-up call,” Gallagher told the Post, noting that he met with Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen and members of her administration during his four-day visit in the sovereign country.
Gallagher referred to concerns from Taiwanese leaders over a $19 billion arms backlog. In the case of some weapons, like anti-ship missiles, one congressional aide said they “aren’t likely to begin arriving in real numbers until 2027 at the earliest,” according to The Washington Post. “That was the biggest thing we heard from every major Taiwanese leader — concerns over delays,” Gallagher added. “That’s troubling the Taiwanese, and I think that’s unacceptable.” (Read more)

5. At East Palestine, Trump tells residents: 'You are not forgotten' - Just the News
Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday delivered a reassuring address to the residents of East Palestine, Ohio, telling people gathered there who have been dealing with the weeks-long aftermath of a massive train wreck: "You are not forgotten."
"We stand with you," Trump told the crowd at the East Palestine Fire Department, "we pray for you, and we'll stay with you in your fight to help answer and [get] accountability that you deserve."
Trump during the address said that the train wreck had "rocked the lives of people throughout this area and long beyond [it]." "We've seen the first responders and railroad workers serving bravely in the line of duty," Trump continued. "We've seen citizens speaking up at the town halls ... Everybody's been watching."
"Biden and FEMA said they would not send federal aid to [the town] under any circumstances," Trump claimed, echoing an earlier allegation that the Biden administration was motivated to act on the East Palestine disaster after Trump himself indicated he would visit the town. "We opened up the dam, and we got them to move," Trump said on Wednesday
Trump had arrived earlier in the day to survey the wreckage of the recent train wreck there, bringing with him truckloads of emergency goods in a move plainly meant to contrast him with his presumed 2024 rival, President Joe Biden. (Read more)

- How we praise You, Dear Lord, for this leader who can empathize with those who have suffered through no fault of their own and then actually do something about it. We know the whole country is watching with deep concern over the lack of government response and is seeing the contrast in how this disaster is handled. Lord, we lift up this situation to You for Your divine help in removing the toxic chemicals and then providing supplies and provision for those whose lives have been so disrupted. If a bird does not fall to the ground without Your noticing it, how much more will You send the right people to help those in need.

6. EPA says it can fine Norfolk Southern $70,000 a day if it falls short of cleaning up and paying for the Ohio toxic train wreck - CNN
The head of the Environmental Protection Agency threatened expensive consequences if Norfolk Southern fails to fully clean up its toxic train wreck and pay for the fallout in East Palestine, Ohio.
The EPA’s new, legally binding order – set to take effect Thursday – “will ensure that Norfolk Southern pays for the mess that they’ve created,” EPA Administrator Michael Regan told CNN on Wednesday.
For weeks, residents have reported a variety of health problems since the Norfolk Southern train carrying toxic chemicals derailed, spewing black clouds of smoke over the community of about 5,000 people.
To help prevent a deadly explosion of vinyl chloride, crews released the toxic chemical into a trench and burned it off. While the EPA says testing shows the air and municipal water in East Palestine are safe, Regan said those with symptoms they believe might be linked to the wreck should “seek medical attention.”
Those residents should “ensure that the state and local health agencies understand those experiences, because as we force Norfolk Southern to take full accountability for what they’ve done, Norfolk Southern will pay for everything,” Regan said. (Read more) .

- Oh, Lord, we see our government is quick to blame, point fingers, and threaten the railroad company while no one there even sent the slightest disaster relief to this plagued area. We do, indeed, however, pray for this company to take responsibility to clean up the toxins spilled and to take care of any housing needed by those affected. We must rely on You, as Lord of All the Earth, to protect the water supply in Ohio as well as downstream as far necessary to prevent any contamination. And, especially, Dear Lord, protect the residents of that area from any diseases or conditions that result from exposure to toxic chemicals. Cover them with Your wings, Father.

7. Calls for Buttigieg's resignation grow among lawmakers, as Ohio Republican hints at impeachment - Just the News
"I hope he does resign, and if he doesn't, you know, there's a long list of impeachment criteria," said Ohio Republican Rep. Warren Davidson.
More GOP lawmakers are calling for Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to resign, with a House Republican from Ohio suggesting the GOP-led chamber should proceed with impeachment if he doesn't step down.
Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio wrote to President Biden about Buttigieg's job performance in light of the Feb. 3 toxic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. He argued that Buttigieg has been absent on the job and it's become a pattern.
"Amidst an impending possible rail strike last year, Secretary Buttigieg left the country to vacation in Portuguese wine country," Rubio wrote. "Near misses in commercial aviation, as well as recent system failures, including the one that shutdown air travel in Florida in January, indicate that serious and persistent problems across the DOT are not being sufficiently remedied. I do not have confidence that Secretary Buttigieg is capable of keeping the American people safe."
Buttigieg told reporters on Monday he plans to visit East Palestine when the time is right. (Read more)

Buttigieg’s actions speak louder than words—doing little or nothing to keep our citizens safe as they travel and his lack of response to the train derailment in Ohio and other recent transportation crises. As he has no training or experience in Transportation, why was he picked for this job in the first place? Has he been following orders from Biden? Lord, we ask You to cause Buttigieg to resign or face imminent impeachment. Send Your favor, wisdom and direction to those leaders who would initiate the impeachment process as he is clearly unfit to serve the people of the United States.

8. Congress Prepares to Investigate COVID-19 Vaccines - Epoch TImes
Members of Congress are preparing to probe COVID-19 vaccine development and other issues related to the shots.The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic is planning to investigate how possible side effects are being studied, the regulatory process of authorizing and approving the vaccines, and why the vaccines were mandated, members told The Epoch Times.
One goal of the committee is making sure the United States is prepared for future pandemics, “and that includes perfecting our vaccine development,” Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) told The Epoch Times via email. “In order to do so, we must have complete transparency in vaccine research, clinical trials and adverse reactions, and manufacturing.”
“I expect our oversight hearings will shed light on the FDA approval process, the potential for side effects, and ultimately the success rate and safety of the vaccine—each of which will help us to navigate future global health emergencies,” she added.
Rep. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.), another member, said the panel “will be performing a comprehensive review of how the vaccines were developed, approved, and mandated.” McCormick, a doctor, is concerned about how data on possible side effects has been collected. He also wants to look into how children as young as 6 months old have been encouraged to get a primary series and at least one booster, “given the lack of scientific evidence for a benefit, coupled with real concerns about possible harm for an otherwise immune person.” (Read more)

COVID served as a forerunner to just how governments, private industry and the media around the world can coordinate to shut down entire countries, control movement of people and suspend citizen rights using fear and intimidation. Now world leaders seem bent of taking yet another step toward the end times by promoting World War III. Russian “president” Vladimir Putin has further rattled the WWIII sabers by unilaterally suspending the nuclear arms limitations between Russia and the US, citing US support for Ukraine is a threat to Russia. Putin has been using the old Soviet-era threat of nuclear weapons as a way to advance his expansionist philosophy for years, but now it’s become critical. Everybody is jumping in.
Putin, in his state of the union speech, said, “The West uses Ukraine as a ram against Russia. The Western elite does not conceal their goal, which is to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia. It means to finish us forever and grow a local conflict into global opposition. This is exactly how we understand it all and we will react accordingly, because in this case we are talking about the existence of our country.” The Biblical allusion could be drawn from the ram in the end time prophecy of Daniel 8:4, “I saw the ram pushing westward, northward, and southward, so that no animal could withstand him; nor was there any that could deliver from his hand, but he did according to his will and became great.” If this is truly the apocalyptical way that Putin is viewing Ukraine, then much of his paranoia about Ukraine and the West signals danger. Russian Legislature Approves Suspension of Nuclear-Arms Treaty With US

Less than a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that Russia was suspending participation in its nuclear weapons treaty with the United States, the Russian Federation’s State Duma unanimously agreed to formally suspend participation in the treaty.
The rubber-stamp approval by the parliamentary body of Putin’s announcement that Moscow was disengaging from the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) also gives the Russian president exclusive authority to determine when—or if—it will resume participating again.
“As of today, Russia is suspending its participation in the strategic offensive arms treaty,” Putin said in a Feb. 21 national address to the Federal Assembly that was delivered nearly one year after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “We’re not withdrawing from the agreement. We’re just suspending [our participation in] it.”
On Jan. 31, the U.S. State Department told Congress in a report that Russia had ceased participating in the treaty since the start of the Ukraine invasion. “Russia’s refusal to facilitate inspection activities prevents the United States from exercising important rights under the treaty and threatens the viability of U.S.–Russian nuclear arms control.” the State Department said in its Russia New START Noncompliance Determination. Putin Confirms Xi to Visit Moscow Amid Deepening China-Russia Ties

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has confirmed that Chinese communist leader Xi Jinping will visit Moscow in the coming months.
Putin said that the Kremlin looked forward to welcoming the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during a Feb. 22 meeting in Moscow with China’s highest-ranking diplomat, Wang Yi.
“We await a visit of the president of the People’s Republic of China to Russia, we have agreed on this,” Putin said during the meeting. Everything is progressing, developing. We are reaching new frontiers.”
Putin’s acknowledgment of Xi’s visit is the first official recognition of an event that has been rumored for months, and comes at a time when the international community is increasingly frustrated with the behavior of both the Kremlin and the CCP.
U.S. officials said earlier in the day that the nation would impose consequences on China should it expand its support of Russia to include lethal aid for Russia’s attempted conquest of Ukraine.
Similarly, U.S. President Joe Biden delivered a vigorous speech to NATO leaders earlier in the day, vowing that the United States would defend NATO territory, citing the alliance’s collective defense provision. “We will defend literally every inch of NATO,” Biden said.

'Runaway' black hole the size of 20 million suns found speeding through space with a trail of newborn stars behind it

Astronomers have spotted a runaway supermassive black hole, seemingly ejected from its home galaxy and racing through space with a chain of stars trailing in its wake.
According to the team's research, which was published on the pre-print server arXiv.org and has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, the discovery offers the first observational evidence that supermassive black holes can be ejected from their home galaxies to roam interstellar space.
The researchers discovered the runaway black hole as a bright streak of light while they were using the Hubble Space Telescope to observe the dwarf galaxy RCP 28, located about 7.5 billion light-years from Earth.

20 States Condemn FBI Memo Targeting Pro-Life Catholics

State attorneys general of 20 states have written a seven-page letter of complaint addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray about a recent memo targeting pro-life Catholics. As LifeNews.com has reported, he FBI Richmond bureau issued a recent memo on “radical-traditional Catholic ideology” that cited the leftist Southern Poverty Law Center. The FBI memo urged agents to probe the supposed nexus between “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists” and “radical-traditional Catholics,” citing the SPLC and including a list of SPLC-designated “hate groups” for agents to target. The federal agency quickly retracted the memo after massive criticism, but pro-life groups and pro-life elected officials want an investigation and accountability.
Missouri Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey and 19 other attorneys general have now issued a letter of condemnation. “As Attorney General, I will protect the Constitution, which includes the basic right to religious liberty enshrined in the First Amendment,” said Attorney General Bailey. “We already knew that President Biden was launching an attack on the First Amendment rights of Americans, as evidenced by our landmark free speech case Missouri v. Biden, but now it’s clear that he’ll weaponize unelected federal bureaucrats to go after any American who doesn’t worship the ‘right way.’ The First Amendment includes both the right to free speech and religious liberty for a reason, and my office will use any tool necessary to defend the rights of all Missourians to worship as they please.” The memorandum distinguishes between what the FBI deems acceptable and unacceptable Catholic beliefs and practices.
