US holds drills in South China Sea amid tensions with China

|
BEIJING (AP) — The United States Navy and Marine Corps are holding joint exercises in the South China Sea at a time of heightened tensions with Beijing over the shooting down of a suspected Chinese spy balloon.
The 7th Fleet based in Japan said Sunday that the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier strike group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit have been conducting “integrated expeditionary strike force operations” in the South China Sea.
It said exercises involving ships, ground forces and aircraft took place Saturday but gave no details on when the began or whether they had ended.
China claims virtually the entire South China Sea and strongly objects to military activity by other nations in the contested waterway through which $5 trillion in goods are shipped every year.
The U.S. takes no official position on sovereignty in the South China Sea, but maintains that freedom of navigation and overflight must be preserved. Several times a year, it sends ships sailing past fortified Chinese outposts in the Spratly Islands, prompting protests from Beijing. (AP) Read more.

US tells citizens to leave Russia immediately
|
|
The U.S. on Monday issued a top-level advisory telling American citizens to leave Russia immediately and cease travel to the country as Russia’s war against neighboring Ukraine continues, citing risks of harassment and wrongful detention for Americans specifically.
“Do not travel to Russia due to the unpredictable consequences of the unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces, the potential for harassment and the singling out of U.S. citizens for detention by Russian government security officials, the arbitrary enforcement of local law, limited flights into and out of Russia, the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia, and the possibility of terrorism,” reads the alert.
“U.S. citizens residing or travelling in Russia should depart immediately. Exercise increased caution due to the risk of wrongful detentions.”
The warning marks the highest level, Level 4, of alerts issued by the State Department, which range from exercising precaution to ceasing all travel.
It comes as the Russia-Ukraine war nears its first anniversary on Feb. 24 and amid concerns that Moscow is amassing troops for an offensive that could coincide with that one-year mark. (The Hill) Read more here.

Asteroid hits Earth in "magnificent" spectacle over Europe
|
|
While the U.S. was busy celebrating the Super Bowl on Sunday night, Europeans had their own spectacle. Early Monday morning, a bright flash streaked across the skies over Western Europe as an asteroid discovered just hours earlier made its impact with Earth's atmosphere.
The asteroid, dubbed Sar2667, was first detected on the evening of Feb. 12 by astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky in Hungary. He told Space.com that he found the asteroid during a routine near-Earth object hunt using a 2-foot telescope.
"It was immediately obvious that it was an NEO, but it wasn't particularly fast across the sky," he said, "as it was heading right towards us, and it was faint."
After additional observatories confirmed its existence and trajectory, European Space Agency Operations put out a statement Sunday evening, saying the 1-meter meteoroid was expected to safely strike the atmosphere over northern France later in the night.
Just before 3 a.m. UT, a "very bright ending flash of the meteor" was detected, confirming that the small asteroid, now called 2023 CX1, had entered Earth's atmosphere, the International Meteor Organization said. It hit near Rouen, the capital of France's Normandy region.
"Just saw it and it was magnificent," one person tweeted along with a video of the asteroid falling above the English Channel facing France. "Came down vertically on time. 2:59. Green like a bright emerald then bright orange really quickly. Absolutely phenomenal view..."
The American Meteor Society has received 40 reports of the fireball from England, the Netherlands, Belgium and France. (CBS News) Read more here.

1..Washington, European powers issue joint condemnation of Israeli settlement plans - Times of Israel
The foreign ministers of the US, the UK, France, Germany and Italy issued a joint statement on Tuesday condemning Israel’s decision to legalize nine outposts and advance plans for some 10,000 new settlement homes in the West Bank.
The steps to further entrench Israel’s presence in the West Bank were unanimously approved on Sunday by the cabinet, which framed the measures as a response to a series of terror attacks in Jerusalem.
Most of the foreign ministers’ countries had already condemned the Israeli announcement individually, so Tuesday’s statement appeared to represent an attempt to drive home the extent of their frustration with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline government. (Read more)

(February 13, 2023 / JNS) Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday called on opposition leaders to stop leading Israel into chaos after a tempestuous Knesset committee meeting and a mass demonstration outside the Knesset in Jerusalem.
“I call on the leaders of the opposition: Stop this. Stop deliberately dragging the country into anarchy. Get over yourself. Show responsibility and leadership because you’re doing the exact opposite,” the prime minister said in a video posted to social media.
“Look what happened today in Jerusalem: The opposition is going wild inside the Knesset and its members are jumping on the tables. [Tel Aviv Mayor] Ron Huldai is explicitly inciting bloodshed, and the leftist demonstration is calling the prime minister a ‘traitor,’ ” he said. (Read more)

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday called for the protest movement against the government’s judicial reform proposal to move to the next stage, one fueled by violent confrontation.
“What is needed is to move to the next stage, the stage of war, and war is not waged with speeches. War is waged in a face-to-face battle, head-to-head and hand-to-hand, and that is what will happen here,” he said in an interview with DemocraTV, according to Israel National News.
“It’s good to see 100,000 people, but that’s not what will lead the real fight. The real fight will break through these fences and enter into a real war,” he added.

4. Bill revoking citizenship for 'pay-for-slay' terrorists reaches final vote - Jerusalem Post
A bill to revoke Israeli citizenship and deport convicted terrorists who received payment from the Palestinian Authority passed its second and third readings on Tuesday and will be presented at the Knesset plenum on Wednesday.
During the hearing on Tuesday, Justice Ministry legal adviser Avital Sternberg said there was an issue with a clause that says the PA cannot dispute affiliation with the terrorist.
“The responsibility to prevent the next attack is on us, not on any lawyer,” Coalition Chairman Ofir Katz (Likud) said. “Those who intend to oppose what we are bringing here, after all the compromises we have made, are welcome to explain it to the bereaved families and the people of Israel.” (Read more)

5. Al-Qaeda Video Shows Former Leader Urging Muslims ‘To Target Interests of Israel’ - Algemeiner
JNS.org – Al-Sahab, the media arm of Al-Qaeda Central Command, published an eight-minute video on Sunday showing a speech by the organization’s assassinated leader, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, who was killed in a US drone hit in Kabul on July 31, 2022.
According to a report by MEMRI’s Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor, shared first with JNS, the video titled “How to Support the Palestinian Cause” is subtitled in English, and Al-Sahabpublished transcripts of Al-Zawahiri’s speech in Arabic and English.
Zawahiri urged Muslims to rise up and help Palestinian Muslims “by targeting the interests of Israel and [of] the powers that support Israel everywhere.”

1. Keachi train derailment leaks 10,000 gallons of acid, causing evacuation - KTAL News
A train derailment in Keachi caused residents to evacuate from their homes Friday night after over 10,000 gallons of acid products were spilled.
According to the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, just before 11 p.m., a train derailed at the railroad crossing on Hwy 5 in Keachi.
By 2 a.m. the Louisiana State Police Hazmat team declared a mandatory evacuation of homes within a one-and-a-half-mile radius of the railroad crossing.
Officials concluded a debriefing with the LSP Hazmat team, Union Pacific, and hazmat contractions at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. The preliminary inspection indicates that 16 cars derailed. Two of 16 derailed tank cars are leaking an acid-related product.
The particular acids react to moisture or water releasing vapor that has occurred at the scene. Officials say air monitoring devices are arriving on the scene to give a more specific determination of the affected areas. This will allow better determination of continued areas of evacuation. 2. Chinese surveillance balloons have been detected over Middle East, US Air Force says - Fox News
The U.S. Air Force has detected Chinese spy balloons over Central Command's area of responsibility in the Middle East, but the aircraft did not appear to pose any danger to U.S. or allied forces, a U.S. Air Force general said Monday.
"Even though we have seen high altitude balloons in the region before, they have not been a threat, they have not been something of concern for us," Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, commander of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, said at a Center for New American Security conference on Monday. “I understand why people are asking the question in the current context, but it’s not something that I lose sleep at night over whatsoever."
White House officials have said the surveillance aircraft shot down earlier this month was part of a "fleet of balloons developed to conduct surveillance operations" by China. Three other flying objects have been shot down in recent days over northeastern Alaska, Canada's Yukon territory, and Lake Huron. (Read more)

Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California released a statement Tuesday afternoon, announcing she will not seek re-election in 2024. Feinstein, 89, has served in the U.S. Senate since 1992, and is the oldest serving senator.
“I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends.

4. Cockpit audio reveals F-16 pilots struggling to describe Michigan UFO - Daily Mail
Chilling audio has revealed the moment F-16 fighter jets locked in on a UFO as they prepared to shoot it down over Lake Huron – while the perplexed pilots struggle to define what exactly they are seeing.
The object shot down over Michigan on Sunday was the third mystifying entity to be downed in US airspace in three days.
Despite a Pentagon memo describing the flying object as a ‘small, metallic balloon’, audio of conversation from inside the jets revealed that the pilots went back and forth over how to define the UFO.
Military officials later described the object as an ‘octagonal structure’, and said it was shot down because it represented “a safety flight hazard and a threat due to its potential surveillance capabilities.”
In the cockpit audio one pilot is heard saying, “‘I wouldn’t really call it a balloon… I don’t know what… I can see it outside with my eyes.” (Read more)

5. Biden to sell 26 million barrels more from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve - Fox Business
The Biden administration on Monday announced another sale of oil from the Energy Department's Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), with 26 million barrels set to be delivered to the market from April 1 to June 30, which will take the number of barrels in the reserve to a new low dating back to 1983.
Unlike the largest-ever drawdown of the SPR that Biden announced in response to Russia's war in Ukraine, the latest release of 26 million barrels is in response to a requirement included in two laws enacted by Congress during the Obama administration under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 and the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. The announcement comes ahead of a potential uptick in gas prices as the U.S. nears the summer driving season.
"Biden is front-loading SPR barrels to avoid a summer gasoline price spike," said Phil Flynn, analyst at Price Futures Group and FOX Business Network contributor. "There are growing concerns among the Biden administration that gas prices are headed back to $4 a gallon and the president is fearful of the political heat he will have to take." (Read more)

6. CDC reports 60% increases in high school girls seriously considering or planning suicide - Fox News
A Center for Disease Control report published Monday detailed an alarming 10-year increase in depression and thoughts of suicide among teenage girls.
Among the more shocking findings in the report:
- 57 percent of high school females reported feeling sadness or hopelessness in 2021, a 58 percent increase from 36 percent in 2011.
- 30 percent of females seriously considered attempting suicide in 2021, an almost 60 percent increase from 19 percent in 2011.
- 24 percent of females made a suicide plan in 2021, a 60 percent increase from 15 percent in 2011.

7. Dutch fighter jets intercept three Russian military aircraft near Poland, escort planes away - Fox News
A pair of Dutch F-35 fighter jets have intercepted a formation of Russian military planes that were flying near Polish airspace, defense officials have revealed.
The incident happened Monday as "The then-unknown aircraft approached the Polish NATO area of responsibility from Kaliningrad," a Russian enclave on the Baltic Sea, Reuters quoted the Netherlands defense ministry as saying.
"After identification, it turned out to be three aircraft: a Russian IL-20M Coot-A that was escorted by two Su-27 Flankers," Netherlands officials reportedly added. "The Dutch F-35s escorted the formation from a distance and handed over the escort to NATO partners." (Read more)

8. Nikki Haley announces presidential campaign - Fox News
Former South Carolina governor and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley announced Tuesday that she is running for president, seeking the Republican nomination for the 2024 election. In a video message posted on Twitter, Haley touted her record as South Carolina's governor, while looking to the future and the needs of the country.
"It's time for a new generation of leadership," Haley stated.
Haley identified numerous threats facing the country, from the "socialist left" to Russia and China, warning that there are those who see the United States as vulnerable.
After a formal announcement Wednesday in Charleston, South Carolina, Haley hits the campaign trail first in New Hampshire and then Iowa, the two states that kick off the GOP presidential nominating calendar. (Read more)

The Biden Administration, under the leader of the Commander in Chief, allowed a known Communist Chinese spy balloon to track its way across the United States for several days without taking action. Biden himself ordered the balloon shot down on February 1, but a defense official overruled him because of “safety concerns.” Then Biden’s boys thought they could throw up a smokescreen and say the same thing happened under Trump several times. Just as the news media was buying that story, the American people got a little outraged and the poll numbers started showing that people were upset that their national security was at risk. But what happens next is bizarre.
Now it seems that anything that flies and Biden can’t identify, they are shooting it down. The US military has shot down four such “unidentified flying objects” in the last week or so. A military jet on Sunday shot down an unidentified object flying over Lake Huron. Nobody knows what it was, or if they do, they aren’t saying. They say it was “octagonal” with strings hanging off of it. Over the northern coast of Alaska another flying something-or-other the size of a car was shot down. Biden said the operation was a “success.” On Saturday, another object was shot down over Canada that was about the size of three school buses. Animals Falling Sick, Dying Near Hellish Ohio Train Derailment Site, Locals Claim
|

|
Animals are falling sick or dying near the train derailment and chemical fire in East Palestine, Ohio, according to reports, which has sparked fears of more widespread impacts.
Taylor Holzer, owner of a farm just outside the evacuation zone near the fire, told WKBN that several animals that he keeps on his property became ill. Some developed a range of symptoms, including liquid diarrhea and puffy faces.
“Out of nowhere, he just started coughing really hard, just shut down, and he had liquid diarrhea and just went very fast,” Holzer told the outlet of one of his animals. “Smoke and chemicals from the train, that’s the only thing that can cause it, because it doesn’t just happen out of nowhere,” he added. “The chemicals that we’re being told are safe in the air, that’s definitely not safe for the animals … or people.”
Authorities have said the train was carrying highly toxic vinyl chloride, hydrogen chloride, and other hazardous materials before it derailed. The Norfolk Southern Railroad train derailed while it was heading to Pennsylvania on Feb. 3.
There were also claims of fish dying in waterways in or near East Palestine. A local environmental official confirmed fish die-offs in reports last week.
“Leslie Run comes out of East Palestine and that goes into Bull Creek, which then goes into North Fork. And we know for sure that there has been some fish kill in Leslie Run and Bull Creek, and some portions of the North Fork,” Matthew Smith, assistant regional scenic river manager for the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, told WKBN. Father, something is very wrong here; and we count on You to bring those persons, policies, and motives to light where unwise, unethical and illegal decisions were made, causing this crash. May we see positive changes as You bring good out of this horror story.

Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, said Monday that he's "horrified" by the Norfolk Southern train derailment earlier this month in East Palestine, warning that many questions remain unanswered after a controlled release of toxic chemicals shrouded the town in thick plumes of black smoke.
About 50 cars, including several carrying vinyl chloride, derailed on the evening of Feb. 3 due to a broken axle.
Three days after the derailment, authorities decided to burn off the toxic gases to avoid an explosion, sending hydrogen chloride and phosgene, a toxic chemical used as a weapon in World War I, into the air.
The Environmental Protection Agency said that tests have not "detected any levels of concern in the community that can be attributed to the incident at this time," but Vance said he's received troubling reports from people on the ground about the environmental impact.
"I have heard alarming anecdotes about contaminated waterways and effects on wildlife. I encourage anyone with credible reports of environmental harms to contact my office," Vance said Monday. "This is a complex environmental disaster with impacts that may be difficult to assess in the short term. Long-term study will be imperative."
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., said the derailment "will have a significant negative impact on the health and wellbeing of the residents for decades. We need Congressional inquiry and direct action from [Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg] to address this tragedy," Omar tweeted on Monday.
Buttigieg failed to mention the derailment in a speech at the National Association of Counties conference on Monday, but tweeted later on Monday evening that he is "concerned about the impacts" of the disaster.
"USDOT has been supporting the investigation led by The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)," Buttigieg tweeted. "We will look to these investigation results & based on them, use all relevant authorities to ensure accountability and continue to support safety." Because there were so many different denominations represented, the chapel team did an amazing job keeping everyone on the same page, and from getting out of order. There was worship, prayer, repentance, public confessions, and testimonies.
I have never experienced anything like this in 26 years of being born again corporately! The Lord spoke loudly I believe…. He doesn’t need any fancy things or big name preachers. God was there to get all the glory…. HE was comfortable!
I honestly believe God is speaking to the church this very thing!! The American church is depending on too many gadgets and personalities. When the lights don’t turn off for four days there’s NO doubt God is tremendously moving.
After 6 hour’s I didn’t want to leave, and you could tell it was the same for everyone there. I believe each day the revival is gaining more intensity. I have studied old time revivals for 26 years. It was surreal because I was now experiencing what I have read for so many years. One of the leaders said “We aren’t stepping into something unusual but something normal!! He also said “Imagine if every church on every street corner was like this.”
The leaders did make calls to die to self. I pray this will spread all over the nation! The Asbury revival may or may not last long. All I know He was there! My wife and I will never forget it. It made an eternal impact on us. Honestly, it’s going to take days to process everything.

Piece of sun breaks off, stuns scientists: ‘Very curious’

Scientists were left baffled after material broke off of the sun’s surface and created a tornado-like swirl around its northern pole.
The remarkable phenomenon was caught by NASA on the James Webb Space Telescope and tweeted by Dr. Tamitha Skov, a space weather forecaster.
“Talk about Polar Vortex!” she wrote last week. “Material from a northern prominence just broke away from the main filament & is now circulating in a massive polar vortex around the north pole of our Star. Implications for understanding the Sun’s atmospheric dynamics above 55° here cannot be overstated!”
Unusual activity typically occurs at the sun’s 55-degree latitudes once every 11-year solar cycle, according to experts, but this incident is stumping researchers.

Couple sharing the Gospel with kids in China escapes arrest
|

China (MNN) — A Christian couple recently escaped arrest in China after the wife was discovered training Sunday School teachers.
“Unfortunately, the Chinese government found out about it and arrested two of her students,” says Greg Yoder with Keys for Kids Ministries. “They were threatening her arrest and doing a lot of research, and God in His sovereignty just allowed this couple to get out.”
Keys for Kids knows this couple because the husband also helped provide Keys for Kids audio on an app for children in China for several years.
Yoder says, “The Chinese government…shut it down after finding 100,000 kids were actually listening to Keys for Kids on a daily basis. It was obviously the largest distribution that we had with Keys for Kids Ministries!
“Now this couple is in the United States and we are [planning to] bring them on staff at Keys for Kids Ministries to begin Keys for Kids Ministries China.”
In China, it is illegal to proselytize children. But Yoder says young people in China are hungry for true hope, especially teens.
“Teenagers, I’m told by our friend, is they get up in the morning, they go to school, they don’t get home from school till sometimes eight or nine o’clock at night, then they study and they do it all again the next morning. There’s nothing for them and there’s no hope. There’s just nothing but utter frustration and depression and anxiety with teenagers, and there is a huge need to reach them,” Yoder says.
“That’s what we’re going to do…. The government tells us that we can’t share the Gospel with kids and teens, but they’re craving it. We know that the Lord Jesus wants us to tell little children and teenagers about Him so we’re going to continue to do that in the best way possible.” (Mission Network News) Read more here.
