Baby formula shortage 'a desperate situation' for many

Ashlyn Hensley was getting desperate.

In March, after scanning the aisles at the local Publix, Walmart, Winn-Dixie and six other stores for baby formula for her son, Jaxon, she returned home empty-handed. Online stores had also run dry.

Jaxon’s allergies require a specific formula, and it's difficult for Hensley to get her hands on it. The WIC program – the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children – helps cover costs for the specialty formula but can't make more product appear out of thin air.

“I've never really thought, as a new mom, I would be worrying about not being able to feed my baby,” Hensley said.

Determined not to let her son go hungry, the Alabama-based mom turned to Facebook groups with sellers offering formula at marked-up prices. She's far from the only parent paying more out of pocket just to get their hands on formula.

As the national baby formula shortage has escalated in recent months, parents have been confronted with familiar problems seen throughout the pandemic: purchase restrictions, hoarding, price gouging and nagging questions about the sacrifices required to make ends meet. In this case: feeding their children.

“Across the board, searching for formula at this point has become a full-time job,” said Brian Dittmeier, senior director of public policy at the National WIC Association, the nonprofit advocacy arm of WIC. “Families are feeling that stress – both financially and in a time cost sense.” (USA Today) Read more.

- Lord God, we come before Your Throne of Grace on bended knee. Help us, O Lord, we pray. Move quickly to free up the supply chain so that this food can reach our infants. Hold those accountable who have caused this disaster, and
cause existing supplies to please be increased by the supernatural move of Your Spirit. Amen and amen.

- "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:19)
A Word of Gratitude from:
The National Day of Prayer Task Force
"Learning to Pray in Prayer"
This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:9-13 NIV
Greetings!

We are overflowing with gratitude as our National Day of Prayer Task Force coordinators are sharing their reports and glory stories from their National Day of Prayer gatherings. Across America people gathered in town squares, around flagpoles, in businesses, stadiums, museums, government buildings, golf courses, on planes, trains, golf carts, in parks, on beaches, boats and more. Millions of hearts and voices came together to “Exalt the Lord Who Has Established Us” and we continue to thank God for all the prayers that were prayed, the speakers who shared, the songs that were sung, the seeds that were planted in hearts and for those who gave their hearts and lives to Jesus after hearing the gospel at their prayer gathering. Praise God!

We would love to hear from you! Let us know how you observed the National Day of Prayer; where you prayed, who you prayed with, if you watched our National Broadcast, and anything special or specific that resonated in your heart. You may have enjoyed an excellent keynote speaker, met someone new that you are going to continue to pray with, or pray for in the coming months. I pray that something you experienced strengthened your resolve to pray every day for your neighbor and nation.

Beyond the singers and speakers, have you been pondering the prayers that were prayed? It is said that “prayer is caught not taught.” In other words, we learn to pray by praying with other people; our prayers grow in intimacy and intensity, in depth and diversity, as we hear other people pray. When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray… Jesus prayed. Thousands of sermons, books and conferences have pointed out the various prayer points and structure of “The Lord’s Prayer,” but instead of going into a discussion about the parts of prayer, relationship in prayer, position, and condition of the heart as we pray, Jesus modeled all of these in prayer.

Scripture is filled with the prayers of people, and we learn to pray by reading their prayers and praying with others. Your family learns to pray listening to you pray. Take time to increase prayer from “God is great, God is good, and we thank Him for our food…” by naming some of God’s great attributes so your friends and family get to know God better and learn to praise Him. Thank Him for more than your food; expand on gratefulness as God always acts in His goodness. We pray that your prayer life grows as you read and pray with us through our articles and videos each week. You do not need to be elegant or use complicated words; the point is to speak respectfully and relationally from your heart as you walk through life with God.

Please send us your stories; tell us about your day and the prayers you prayed and if you “caught” something new that you will put into practice as you continue to pray. Email us at glory.story@nationaldayofprayer.org

Will you pray with me right now?

"Awesome God, Wonderful Savior, King of Kings, Author and authority of our life; thank You for loving us, for saving us, for preparing our path and lighting it with Your Word, guiding and equipping us in Your Spirit. You are worthy of our praise and thanks. Thank you for the National Day of Prayer; the opportunity to pray in agreement with millions of people around the world and neighbors in our communities. Thank you for hearing our prayers and for answering our prayers to Your glory and plans. We lift America up to you as we exalt You. We want America to bless You, to be the nation You established. We pray that we would know and obey Your Word, will and ways; that our laws and lips would glorify you. In moments where we are prone to complain, prompt us to pray; to put our fears, hurt, and anger into Your hands, the ONLY hands the hold our hearts and the universe."

Serving Him with Gladness,

Kathy Branzell

In Context: Small Things
On Tuesday, 5/3, there was a curious entry in the daily Senate floor log of Senator floor speeches:
3:52 p.m. Senator Durbin spoke on abortion and microchips.
In his speech, he noted things on the two separate topics such as:
  • Last December, a report from Harvard warned that China is now a "Full-spectrum peer competitor" when it comes to advanced technology like AI and quantum computing.
  • We have become dangerously dependent on China and other competitors when it comes to securing our supply chain with microchips.
  • The Supreme Court found the right to privacy by combining the rights of several other different amendments.
There's much that can be said on both topics, and much has. Abortion has become an unusually frequent topic in the Congressional Record for the last two weeks.

Both unborn children and microchips are small and of large value. One is a precious tiny human being made by God. The other is a tiny calculator made by man.

Senator Durbin was arguing for the legal destruction of one and federal funding of the other.

These topics intersect in other ways, too:
  • China. They are making the same mistake valuing technology higher than human life.
  • Social media. The tiny children that escape abortion must later contend with technology themselves, as Sen. Blackburn noted.
America has many challenges today. There is no shortage of theories as to why, nor of hypotheses as to what would help us overcome these challenges.

Until both our diagnosis and our prescription for our challenges begin and end with the knowledge of God and of His Word, we can and
should expect these challenges to persist and get worse.

Father, teach us to stop spinning, stirring, panicking and fearing man and this world. Teach us to rest in You and in Your Word which you have so generously given us. Open our eyes, ears, minds and hearts to understanding You and Your ways. Show us where we've been deceived believing lies, and turn us to the Truth in You.

“For who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see The plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. They are the eyes of the Lord, Which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.” (
Zechariah 4:10)

From the floor colloquy:
The House will consider Chairman Scott's H.R. 7309, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2022, which is an important part of the Make It In America agenda. Now more than ever, businesses need skilled workers, and it is essential that we reauthorize WIOA to expand access to skills training for high-demand, high-wage jobs.

Mr. Speaker, the House will also consider H.R. 7688, the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act, introduced by Representatives Kim Schrier and Katie Porter. This critical legislation seeks to give the Federal Trade Commission greater authority to rein in excessive gas prices. This bill would protect consumers against irresponsible actors in oil and gas who would artificially inflate prices for extra profit, and it will help Americans struggling with higher energy costs.

Mr. Speaker, the House will also consider two bills under suspension of the rules in recognition of National Police Week. Mr. Speaker, 23,229 of our fellow citizens have lost their lives, over the course of the existence of our country, in law enforcement, in doing their duties and protecting us and protecting our property. The first of those bills is H.R. 6943, the Public Safety Officer Support Act, bipartisan legislation that would expand eligibility for the Public Safety Officers' Benefit program to include stress and trauma-related injuries and death by suicide for law enforcement officers and their families. Tragically, Mr. Speaker, that happens too often as a result of the trauma and stress which our police officers around the country confront. The second bill is H.R. 2992, the TBI and PTSD Law Enforcement Training Act, again bipartisan legislation, Mr. Speaker, that would require the Department of Justice to develop crisis intervention training tools for law enforcement agencies so they can better equip officers to respond to individuals with traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder, some of the most dangerous confrontations that our officers have.

The House will also consider, Mr. Speaker, H.R. 6531, the Targeting Resources to Communities in Need Act of 2022, sponsored by Jim Clyburn and Hal Rogers, the ranking member on the Appropriations Committee. Unfortunately, that failed on suspension, so it is coming back under a rule.

Our Weekly Call to Repentance

CHPP Welcomes You to Join Us Every Week in One Hour of Repentance

Sunday evening at 10:00 p.m. EDT
Dial 712-770-5350
Access Code: 150411#

Dear Saints,

A lifestyle of REPENTANCE is so close to the heart of God.

Indeed, He commands us to  "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" Matthew 3:2

How, then, can we approach His Throne of GRACE, in repentance?

We invite you to join us every week on Sunday evening, as we explore this vital topic together. We present a different prayer focus each week, leading us into repentance, so that we might approach His Throne of Grace in repentance, presenting ourselves to Him as a pure and a spotless Bride, without spot or wrinkle. (Ephesians 5:27)

Praying together, we desire to fulfill the mandate of Psalm 139:

" Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting." Psalm 139:24

You can join us, any Sunday evening, at 10:00 p.m. EST by calling:

712-770-5350
Access Code: 150411#

WELCOME!

". . . and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

"Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place."
(2 Chronicles 7:14,15)
