US, UK, Australia Announce New Security Partnership Amid Rise in Chinese Influence
|
|
The United States, the UK, and Australia on Sept. 15 announced a new trilateral security partnership for the Indo-Pacific amid rising Chinese assertiveness in the region.
The new alliance was announced by President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison during a joint virtual press conference from each of their capitals.
The first move under this partnership, called “AUKUS,” will be for the United States and the UK to support Australia in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines, according to a joint statement by the three governments. “We all recognize the imperative of ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific over the long term,” Biden said.
Morrison said the submarines would be built in the city of Adelaide, in close cooperation with the United States and the UK; he stressed that Australia won’t be fielding nuclear weapons. “We will continue to meet all our nuclear non-proliferation obligations,” he said.
Johnson called it a momentous decision for Australia to acquire the technology, adding that it would make the world safer. The three countries will now commence an 18-month consultation period to hash out the details of the development project, the joint statement said.
The alliance is also set to enhance sharing of information in key technologies between the three countries. “AUKUS will bring together our sailors, our scientists, and our industries to maintain and expand our edge in military capabilities and critical technologies, such as cyber, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and undersea domains,” Biden said. 1. Egyptian-Israeli interests align as US reduces aid to Cairo - JNS
(September 15, 2021 / JNS) The Sept. 13 meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Sharm El-Sheikh in the Sinai Peninsula is a dramatic public encounter on Egyptian soil that signals a new alignment of interests during a complex historical junction.
According to international media reports, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had visited El-Sisi in Egypt secretly in the past. But the decision to publicly invite an Israeli prime minister means that the Egyptian president felt comfortable enough to frame the visit as a legitimate effort that serves his nation’s interests, in spite of the anti-Israeli sentiment that is common among large sections of the Egyptian public, according to Moshe Albo, a senior researcher in the Institute for Policy and Strategy at IDC Reichman University in Herzliya.
Albo, a retired lieutenant colonel from the Israel Defense Forces who served as the head of an arena in the research division in the Military Intelligence Directorate noted in a recent Hebrew-language paper that the invitation is “a public gesture that illustrates the promotion in ties and strategic connection between the states in light of challenges and sensitive issues.” However, the invitation does not, he warned, signal an Egyptian willingness to promote normalization or to extend bilateral ties into new levels of economic, civilian and cultural cooperation. 2. Gantz: We’ll Take a US Nuke Deal with Iran But Must Have Plan B and C - Jewish Press
Defense Minister Benny Gantz told Foreign Policy in an interview published Tuesday (Israel Can Live With a New Iran Nuclear Deal, Defense Minister Says) that Israel would be willing to accept a return to a US-negotiated nuclear deal with Iran, but Israel would want to see a “viable US-led plan B” with broad economic sanctions on Iran if the talks fail, as well as a plan C: US support for Israeli military action should the Islamic Republic reach a viable nuclear device.
Gantz believes Iran is between two and three months away from being able to produce one nuclear bomb, having “steadily ramped up its nuclear work since the United States withdrew from the deal, despite a so-called maximum pressure campaign advanced by Trump and Netanyahu that included sanctions and sabotage efforts.”
On Tuesday night, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett sharply criticizes former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an interview with News 12, saying there was a very large gap between Bibi’s speeches and actions on the ground: “Israel inherited a situation where Iran is at the most advanced point ever in the race for the nuclear bomb. Do you remember the performance of my predecessors at the UN with the bomb and the red line? Iran has long since crossed that red line. 3. 4 arrested in plot to attack German synagogue on Yom Kippur - Israel National News
Four people were arrested in Germany on suspicion of planning an attack on a synagogue in the city of Hagen on Yom Kippur. One of the detainees is a 16-year-old Syrian boy. Police have described the plot as "Islamist."
The Yom Kippur evening services were cancelled at the synagogue Wednesday night as police cordoned off the building.
Armin Laschet, Minister-President of the North Rhine-Westphalia region, stated that “it appears that prior to today on Yom Kippur, an Islamist motivated attack was averted." Laschet added: “We will do everything we can to clarify which networks may have been behind.” (Read more)

4. 12-year-old killed, 11-year-old seriously injured in Yom Kippur road accidents - Times of Israel
A 12-year-old cyclist was killed and an 11-year-old boy was seriously injured in separate incidents over Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, which began Wednesday at sundown and ended Thursday evening.
Israelis often take advantage of the generally deserted roads and highways, filling the streets in droves over the holiday.
The boy, a resident of Ramat Gan, was killed while riding his bicycle on Route 4 near the town of Givat Shmu’el in the center of the country on Wednesday evening. (Read more)

5. Israel prison escapees began digging tunnel in December, lawyers say - YNET News
Palestinian prisoners who broke out of a high-security Israeli jail this month began digging their escape tunnel in December, lawyers for two of the arrested escapees said on Wednesday.
Six inmates staged a dramatic escape from Gilboa jail in northern Israel on September 6 after digging a tunnel under a sink in their cell and making their way to freedom. Israeli security forces launched a large-scale manhunt for the escapees in Israel and the West Bank, and have since recaptured four of them.
Lawyers for two of those arrested, Mahmud Abdullah Ardah and Yaqub Qadri, on Wednesday revealed details of their escape. "Mahmud told me he started digging (the tunnel) in December," his lawyer Roslan Mahajana said after visiting him in detention. (Read more)

Press Secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden has “complete confidence” in Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley amid reports that he promised to warn a top People’s Liberation Army general if the U.S. moved to strike China.
“What I can assure you all of is that the president knows Gen. Milley,” Psaki told reporters during her Wednesday press conference. “He has been Chairman of the Joint Chiefs for almost eight months of his presidency. They’ve worked side-by-side through a range of international events. The president has complete confidence in his leadership, his patriotism, and his fidelity to our constitution.”
Milley allegedly promised Gen. Li Zuocheng, the chief of China’s Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission, that he would warn China if then-President Donald Trump launched an attack in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, according to an excerpt from an unreleased book by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.

2. Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper Ordered ‘Backchannel’ Message To China Indicating Trump Would Not Attack: Report – War Room Report
Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper reportedly ordered a “backchannel” message to reassure China the United States would not be seeking military action in the days leading up to the 2020 presidential election.
News of Esper’s actions come as General Mark Milley has been accused by former President Donald Trump of ‘treason’ for allegedly having said he would warn China if the United States planned to conduct a military strike this past October.
Multiple sources, according to an Axios report, indicate that top officials at the Pentagon were concerned that China was getting bad intelligence about a possible surprise attack by the United States.

“It isn’t right for people to be forced to take the vaccine because there are actual side effects like this that could happen to you, and the NCAA should not mandate student athletes to get the vaccine because of what could happen to so many fellow student athletes’ health issues which has happened to me,” Stallings continued. Christian ministries have lost contact with numerous partners in Afghanistan as the embattled country enters a “new phase” of the crisis sparked by the Taliban takeover, the head of a U.S.-based ministry has said.
William Stark, International Christian Concern’s regional manager for South Asia, told The Christian Post that when the Taliban took control of much of Afghanistan following the drawing down of U.S. troops in August, many ministries working with the country’s underground church worked tirelessly to evacuate at-risk Christians.
Now, as Christians trapped in the country face an uncertain future, many have gone silent, desperately seeking to avoid the probing eyes of the Taliban.
“Christians are now in hiding because of active threats against their community,” Stark said. He shared stories of how Christians continue to face threats from members of the Taliban. In one situation, an Islamic extremist threatened to kidnap a Christian man’s daughters and marry them off to members of the Taliban. In another, a Christian man received a letter from the Taliban saying his house belonged to them. Christians have also been warned to refrain from gathering.

10. Evangelical media leader blasts ‘cancel culture' in new book: ‘Enough is enough’ - Christian Post
A prominent evangelical Christian media leader has authored a new book that seeks to spread awareness of the dangers of cancel culture to Christians.
Stephen Strang, the founder of Charisma Media and its flagship publication Charisma magazine, critiqued cancel culture and how it can negatively impact Christians in his latest book released earlier this month, God and Cancel Culture: Stand Strong Before It’s Too Late.
The book documents incidents of cancel culture committed on social media and by big businesses. Such cases include the backlash MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell got in response to his claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. Lindell wrote the forward for the book.
In an interview with The Christian Post, Strang said that he wrote the book because he believes that people have been “trying to cancel Christianity” in some way or another, “going all the way back to the Roman Empire.”

There is a shocking poll of 10,000 16-to-25-year-olds across 10 countries that indicates 56% agree that humanity is doomed and 75% believe that the future is frightening. Vice.com reports: “The study, published today in Lancet Planetary Health and led by academics and professionals at the University of Bath, Stanford Medicine Centre for Innovation in Global Health, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and others, found that people from countries more directly and immediately impacted by climate change tended to be more worried about the future. Ninety-two percent of young people in the Philippines said they felt like the future was frightening, compared to just 56 percent in Finland.” Moreover, trust in government is low.
Only 28% of young people in the UK and 21% in the US thought government could be trusted when it came to the planet. According to the report’s authors, climate anxiety among young people is an “inescapable stressor,” and that unpredictable and extreme weather patterns are likely to further add to psychological distress. The study’s co-lead author, Caroline Hickman of the University of Bath, concluded, “Our children’s anxiety is a completely rational reaction given the inadequate responses to climate change they are seeing from governments. MADRID (Reuters) - Authorities on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma have warned that a sudden increase in seismic activity could herald a volcanic eruption in the coming days or weeks.
Spain's National Geographic Institute has detected 4,222 tremors in a so-called "earthquake swarm" in the Cumbre Vieja national park, around the Teneguia volcano in the far south of the island.
As the quakes intensified and moved closer to the surface, the Canary Island's regional government on Tuesday put the island on a yellow alert for an eruption, the second of a four-level alert system.
More than 11 million cubic metres (388 million cubic feet)of magma have seeped into Cumbre Vieja in recent days, swelling the peak by around 6 centimetres, the Volcanic Institute of the Canaries said on Thursday. (Reuters) Read more here.

Fears are growing that a volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands could erupt after 1,000 earthquakes were registered on the island in the past five days. Experts have noticed an upsurge in seismic activity and magma displacements under the volcanic ridge of La Cumbre Vieja on the popular tourist hotspot, which has a population of 85.000.
Spain's National Geographic Institute has detected 4,222 tremors in a so-called "earthquake swarm" in the Cumbre Vieja national park, around the Teneguia volcano in the far south of the island. . . . The strongest tremor of the latest earthquake swarm has had a magnitude of 3.4, the Involcan vulcanology institute said.

An earthquake swarm is a sequence of seismic events occurring in one place within a relatively short period of time. 'An intensification of the type of seismic activity in the coming days cannot be ruled out,' the institute said.
The ridge of the volcano covers the southern two-thirds of the small island and the yellow alert warning affects four municipalities including Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso and El Mazo.
A 2001 research article claimed a change in the eruptive activity of Cumbre Vieja volcano and a fracture on the volcano that formed during the 1949 eruption may be the prelude to a giant ridge collapse.
Authors Steven N Ward and Simon Day estimated such a collapse could cause tsunamis across the entire North Atlantic and severely impact countries as far away as North America. (Read more, including amazing photos, here)

If we recall what happened ten years ago at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan, and we consider that scientists are now saying that there is a possible similar tsunami event that is about to hit our eastern coasts, then this gives us pause to pray.
In the United States, eighteen of these plants lie along our eastern coast. Let us pray:
- Father God, we bring this very serious matter before Your Throne of Grace, and we ask for Your divine intervention ahead of this possible disaster. As we continue in repentance, we ask for Your Hand of Mercy to rest upon each of these nuclear facilities, saving us from harm, and sparing our infrastructure from disaster. Thank You, O Lord, for hearing our prayer, amen and amen!

SpaceX launch creates mesmerizing clouds over East Coast
|

Excitement filled the air at Cape Canaveral, Florida, as four people sat atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket destined for space. The clock hit zero, the engines roared to life and the passengers were in for the ride of their lives.
Sian Proctor, Hayley Arceneaux, Jared Isaacman and Christopher Sembroski lifted off from Florida shortly after 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday on the Inspiration4 mission, the first all-private orbital spaceflight.
The launch was a success with the four crew members making it into space where they plan to orbit the Earth for several days before returning home. This mission is significantly different than those recently by Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson, who both only made a brief visit to space without ever orbiting the planet.
Counting this crew of four, along with the seven people on the International Space Station and the three others on the Tiangon Space Station, there are 14 humans in space. This is the highest number of people in space at the same time than at any other point in spaceflight history. Read More

KY Church Partners with Police to Help Bridge Gap with Communities During Troubling Times

In this climate, how can law enforcement officers make inroads in their communities? CBN News discovered the Church may be one answer.
George Floyd's murder led to a push across the country to overhaul police departments. Cincinnati, Ohio, has not been immune to the protests.
"Have there been outcries and frustrations; there have been calls to defund the police; there have been calls to reimagine the police here in Cincinnati, just like there have been in other areas," Capt. Steve Saunders of the Cincinnati Police Department told CBN News.
One partnership involves Seven Hills Church, a large congregation in the greater Cincinnati area. Pastor Marcus Mecum says as a part of an area pastoral group, Seven Hills was assigned to reach out to police.
"The police department in Cincinnati and Hamilton County, specifically, and then some other ones local here, have made it really easy to help connect us to real needs in the community, and sometimes also, within their departments," he shared with CBN News.
"And so, these are human beings; they have souls; they have families; they have futures; they have dreams, and we just do our best as a church to be there," he continued.
Times of Generosity
Its support during the pandemic led the Cincinnati Police Department to name the church its 2020 "Community Partner of the Year."
"During COVID, you had a lot of the different race riots, and we were down there as a church supporting the police by just feeding them, giving them water, some of them were on call for sometimes up to 20 hours," Mecum said.
Saunders recalls other times of generosity.
"And they said they just wanted to share their support and love and encouragement for us," he explained. "So that's, that's great. So it started off with a simple thing; they brought small gift bags for all of our officers and all of our civilians."

This is day twenty eight in our journey. Join us even if you are beginning today. Each day starting Saturday August 7 we have posted a sin which the Lord would have us confess and remove through personal repentance. God willing, these 40 days will lead us to the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur September 15.
This process is taking place during the month of Elul, a period of reflection, introspection, and repentance before the Days of Awe. The shofar is sounded in each morning’s prayer service during Elul as a call to repentance. It’s believed that in Elul, Adonai forgave our people and relented from destroying us. Elul is also a time to contemplate G-d’s lovingkindness and forgiveness. The hebrew letters that spell the month Elul - אלול - stand for “I am my Beloved's, and my Beloved is mine.” According to Jewish tradition the King is in the field during Elul and this is the season to meet Him there.
Today the sin is envy.
There's a SPIRITUAL DROUGHT in every nation on the planet. We are not yet honoring the Authority of the Risen Christ that He revealed in Matthew 28:18: " ALL authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."
