Behind the Banking Crisis that Shook the Financial System

For the first time since the financial crisis of 2008–09, confidence in the U.S. banking system has eroded as three major banks shuttered in one week: Silvergate, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), and Signature Bank. As experts brace for the next domino to fall in the unfolding turmoil, the federal government and the Federal Reserve are trying to prevent a contagion effect that could devastate the broader economy.
But will these efforts be enough?
In the fallout of SVB and Signature Bank, the public is still trying to wrap its collective head around what exactly happened to these financial institutions. While there were several reasons for SVB’s collapse, interest rates played a considerable factor.
Most of SVB’s clients were venture capital firms, tech companies, and Silicon Valley executives. The bank attracted new clients by offering higher deposit rates, funded by acquiring long-term and high-yielding bonds. However, SVB quickly became vulnerable to the Fed’s quantitative tightening initiative, eroding the valuation of those bonds and causing widespread investment losses.
Balance-sheet problems became ubiquitous as the entity needed to maintain sufficient levels of deposits on hand and allocate a high percentage of its capital to cover its higher rates. Fidelity also noted that SVB produced “a reputation for having non-as-strict lending standards,” meaning that the bank may have offered loans to risky venture-backed firms that had deposits at SVB. Obtaining capital became a more challenging feat since a rising-rate climate had decimated the tech sector.
“There’s an old adage that says the Fed tightens until something breaks,” Jurrien Timmer, director of global macro at Fidelity, said in a note. “It looks like we have a sense of what is breaking during this Fed cycle.” (Epoch Times) Read more here. |

Tucker Carlson: A "Fascist Gulag" is "obviously their goal" and the Jan 6 Narrative is Foundational

In a candid March 8 interview with Glenn Beck, Tucker Carlson reflected that based on their “freakin’ crazy” and unified response, the January 6 narrative is clearly “foundational” to the plans of establishment leaders, which may include not only the designating of dissenting voters as “terrorists” but the creation of a virtual “fascistic gulag” for all citizens.
... Regarding the January 6 narrative, Carlson said the second he challenged the broad assertion that it was “an armed white supremacist insurrection … they went freakin’ crazy.”
“All of a sudden you’ve got Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer saying exactly the same thing. Well, that tells you, through inductive reasoning, that this is the foundation of something that they’re colluding on,” Carlson said. “That [January 6] story is at the center of what they’re doing and what they’re planning, obviously.”
Regular people, political opponents of the regime, now redefined as ‘terrorists’ unleashing FBI, CIA and NSA upon them
Asked what he believed the motivation was, among members of both parties, to maintain the “large lie” of January 6, the highly popular television host said, “I can only speculate, but I know the effects of the lie, and they’re not small.”
One observation he made was that January 6 is being used as “a cudgel” by the elites to “beat down their opponents and grab more power for themselves.”
What this narrative serves to do is “change the definition of ‘terrorism’ from something that exists in other countries and is aimed at us” to “anybody who questions the legitimacy of the current power holders,” including Populist, Republican and Bernie Sanders voters, Carlson explained. Such an individual is “now redefined not as a political opponent but as a terrorist.”

Pentagon video shows Russian jet dumping fuel on US drone .

The Pentagon on Thursday released video of what it said was a Russian fighter jet dumping fuel on a U.S. Air Force surveillance drone before the warplane clipped the drone’s propeller in international airspace, leading to its crash in the Black Sea and raising tensions between Moscow and Washington over the war in Ukraine.
Poland, meanwhile, said it’s giving Ukraine a dozen MiG-29 fighter jets, becoming the first NATO member to fulfill Kyiv’s increasingly urgent requests for warplanes.
The U.S. military’s declassified 42-second color footage shows a Russian Su-27 approaching the back of the MQ-9 Reaper drone and releasing fuel as it passes, the Pentagon said. Dumping the fuel appeared to be aimed at blinding the drone’s optical instruments to drive it from the area. (AP News) Read more

1. Netanyahu: President's outline a 'major missed opportunity' - Israel National News
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called President Isaac Herzog's judicial reform compromise outline a "major missed opportunity" while speaking to reporters in Berlin Thursday evening.
"This is not the 'People's Framework,' and I'm not even sure it's the framework of half the people," Netanyahu said.
“What was brought in front of the president from the coalition regarding the appointment of judges included a two-stage framework – an immediate fix to some extent and then balance afterwards. The president heard these things, and brushed them aside, unfortunately,” he added.
Netanyahu addressed the widespread protests in Israel against the judicial reforms, saying that he is “attentive to what is happening among the people,” he tells Israeli journalists, “but we have to bring something that matches the mandate we received, and we will do this responsibly.” (Read more)

2. Israeli Protests Ramp up as Government Rejects Compromise on Judicial Reform - Algemeiner
i24 News – Israeli protesters pressed ahead on Thursday with demonstrations against a judicial overhaul by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after the rightist leader rejected a compromise proposal intended to defuse the crisis.
Despite efforts by the country’s figurehead president, Isaac Herzog, to pave a way out of the political crisis, the sides appeared to be further digging in on Thursday. Netanyahu and his hard-right allies were intent on steamrolling ahead with their original plan despite weeks of mass protests and widespread opposition from broad swaths of Israeli society and dire warnings by Herzog that Israel was barreling toward an “abyss.”
Should the initial proposal pass, it would mean greater government sway in selecting judges and limit the power of the High Court to strike down legislation. One major point of contention in the planned overhaul is an amendment to the way in which judges are selected. (Read more)

3. EU foreign-policy chief barred from official visits to Israel - World Israel News
Israeli officials will not meet with Josep Borrell, the European Union’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, should he visit the Jewish state, following comments he made equating Palestinian terrorist attacks with operations undertaken by the Israel Defense Forces.
The Associated Press cited an Israeli official as saying on Wednesday that while a visit by Borrell has not been requested, he would have to arrive as a private citizen with no expectations of assistance from the government.
“He’s not banned,” the official said. “We don’t think it’s a good time to come.”
Borrell wrote in an article last week on the commentary site Project Syndicate that “violence on the part of Israeli settlers in the West Bank is increasingly threatening Palestinian lives and livelihoods—almost always with impunity. (Read more)

4. Ben Gvir says attorney general must be fired, is acting as de facto opposition chief - Times of Israel
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir on Thursday called for Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara’s ouster, claiming that she has been “serving as the de facto opposition leader.”
In a letter to fellow coalition party chiefs urging them to back the move, Ben Gvir claimed Baharav-Miara’s approach since the December 29 establishment of the hardline coalition has been to “automatically reject any decision or bill backed by the government or those related to it.”
While members of the ruling coalition have been regularly criticizing Baharav-Miara and have even hinted at a desire to remove miiher as attorney general, Ben Gvir became the first to openly make such a call. (Read more)

5. In first reference to protests, Iran says Israel ‘will be toppled by the wind’ - JNS
(March 16, 2023 / Israel Hayom) Iran has addressed the ongoing protests in Israel over the government’s judicial reform plan, saying they prove that the country is “a rootless structure that will be toppled by the wind.”
“A new identity crisis has emerged in the spider’s web. Of course, this is only one of the deep crises in Israel,” said Nasser Kanaani, according to a Tasnimnews agency report on Wednesday.
The protests have so far received little coverage in the Iranian media, which have mostly been preoccupied with the schoolgirl poisoning scandal and the negotiations with Saudi Arabia. (Read more)

1. They Should be Tried for Fraud and Treason – President Trump on Jan 6 Committee Members Who Hid Video Exonerating Jan 6 Victims – Gateway Pundit
President Trump and the American people are livid with the actions taken by the corrupt House Jan 6 Committee now that more information is coming out that exonerates those arrested for Jan 6 crimes.
On Monday night Tucker Carlson reported that his team’s impression after they looked at thousands of hours of videos from Jan 6 that they were allowed to see was that most of the people at the Capitol that day were peaceful and even showed reverence for the Capitol.
This was uncovered on Monday when Tucker Carlson shared that the “Qanon Shamon” was peacefully being escorted around the Capitol during the Capitol protests and nine Capitol police were near him and did nothing. He was not violent as the Democrats and the media shared. This was all a lie.
Video footage used by the House Jan 6 Committee was doctored to make it look worse than it was. This was an attempt to distort the truth and make things look worse than they were. The Capitol protests were nothing compared to the BLM and Antifa riots of 2020 that killed numerous American and resulted in a billion in damages or more to US cities.
President Trump is calling for the Jan 6 Committee to be held accountable for their crimes.
In a message on Truth Social, President Trump shared the following: "GREAT JOB BY TUCKER CARLSON TONIGHT. The Unselect Committee of political Hacks & Thugs has been totally discredited. And so, the "bailout" arrives just a few hours before the Europe open, Credit Suisse said it’s planning to borrow from the Swiss National Bank up to CHF50 billion ($54 billion) under a covered loan facility which is "fully collateralized by high quality assets". It wasn't immediately clear what high quality assets CS has left to pledge but in a time of BTFP, we are confident they found something.
The bank also announced offers by Credit Suisse International to repurchase certain OpCo senior debt securities for cash of up to about CHF3 billion, which will help the bank pick up a few pennies in bond discount, even as it faces tens of billions in deposit flight. (Read more)

3. Federal Reserve's Bank Rescue Could Inject $2 Trillion of Liquidity, Raising Inflation Concerns - The Epoch Times
Strategists at JPMorgan Chase predict that the Federal Reserve’s emergency lending program to bolster stressed banks could inject as much as $2 trillion into the U.S. banking system, with some analysts raising concerns that the program could fuel inflation or boost moral hazard.
Following the abrupt failures of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank, the Federal Reserve rolled out an emergency funding mechanism called the Bank Term Funding Program to ensure banks ample have access to cash to meet depositor demand.
“The usage of the Fed’s Bank Term Funding Program is likely to be big,” JPMorgan strategists wrote in a client note Wednesday.
The strategists said that the maximum usage for the emergency lending facility is close to $2 trillion. They said it would be able to provide the U.S. banking system with enough funds to reduce reserve scarcity and reverse the central bank’s recent tightening of financial conditions.
While the U.S. banking system has reserves of around $3 trillion, a large part of that is held by the biggest banks, and it will be the smaller banks that are more likely to tap the Fed’s lending mechanism. (Read more)

4. How Dangerous is AI and Will it Really Take Your Job? - ZeroHedge
Artificial intelligence (AI), we’re told, will probably destroy humanity. Then again, those in the know tell us that it probably won’t. One thing AI will definitely do, though, is take our jobs , leaving a mass of unemployed, utterly useless individuals in its wake. Right?
The truth, though, is far more nuanced than some reports would have us believe. There are currently 6.47 million unemployed people in the United States. Due to fierce competition, credential inflation, and companies becoming more selective, many of these people may find themselves unemployed for the foreseeable future. To compound matters, the jobless must also factor in another huge obstacle: AI-enabled machines and automation.
It’s natural to fear new technology. The printing press was met with shock and horror. So, too, were inventions such as the telephone, radio, and TV. But AI is nothing like these rather benign creations. It’s a completely different animal altogether, one that has the power to destroy countless professions, but also create a number of eye-opening opportunities. Some analysts warn that AI will alter the employment landscape permanently. According to researchers at Oxford University, AI poses a direct threat to 47 percent of U.S. jobs. (Read more)

5. J6 Political Prisoner Matthew Webler: The FBI Raided His Home After He Walked into the US Capitol with a Flag: Then Feds Came Back and Took His Son – The Gateway Pundit
Matthew Jay Webler walked inside the US Capitol, the People’s House, on January 6, 2021. He was carrying a flag. He committed no violence. He immediately left when he was asked to leave. The FBI later raided his home for walking inside the US Capitol. They searched his home and found a gun they have for protection. The FBI arrested Matthew because he had a felony on his record from 10 years ago. They held him without bond and later a court sentenced him to 45-days for parading and picketing in the Capital and an addition 57-months (nearly 5 years) for having an unregistered short barrel rifle when they searched his home.
Matthew’s maximum release date is February 2, 2025. He may get out in August 2024 thanks to President Trump’s First Step Act. He is currently serving time at FCI Edgefield, a medium-security prison.
The FBI raided his home and forced his wife on the ground at 6 AM in the morning. And then weeks later the government took his son.

7. Ukraine War: US and Russian Military Chiefs in Rare Talks After Drone Downed – Jerusalem Post
First known direct US-Russia confrontation since invasion • Russia says drone flights near Crimea 'provocative'
Washington's top general said the crash of a US surveillance drone after being intercepted by Russian jets showed Moscow's increasingly aggressive behavior while Russia warned Washington that flying drones near Crimea risked escalation.
A day after the US drone went down over the Black Sea, defense ministers and military chiefs from the US and Russia held rare telephone conversations on Wednesday with relations at their lowest point in decades over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Moscow's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told his US counterpart, Lloyd Austin, that American drone flights by Crimea's coast "were provocative in nature" and could lead to "an escalation ... in the Black Sea zone," a ministry statement said.
But he reiterated at a news conference that the US intended to continue flying where international law allowed and demanded Russian military aircraft operate in a safe and professional manner.
The statement from Russia's defense ministry said the two countries should "act with a maximum of responsibility" including by having military lines of communication in a crisis.

This is how the slippery slope to all-out persecution starts. This particular slippery slope has to do with the government’s use of geofence technology, which uses cell phone location data to identify people who are in a particular area at any given time.
First, police began using geofence warrants to carry out dragnet sweeps of individuals near a crime scene.
Then the FBI used geofence warrants to identify individuals who were in the vicinity of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
It wasn’t long before government officials in California used cell phone and geofence data to track the number and movements of churchgoers on church grounds
during the COVID-19 lockdowns. If we’ve already reached the point where people praying and gathering on church grounds merits this level of government scrutiny and sanctions, we’re not too far from free-falling into a total surveillance state.
Dragnet geofence surveillance sweeps can and eventually will be used to target as a suspect every person in any given place at any given time and sweep them up into a never-ending virtual line-up in the hopes of matching a criminal to every crime.
There really can be no overstating the danger.

When might doesn’t make right

When governments get too big and too powerful, the rights of citizens suffer. Every society in history has seen it and America is no exception. The government of the people, for the people and by the people is turning into a government of the government, for the government and by the ruling elite. Technology and bureaucracy are used to censure dissent as well as invade the privacy of every citizen. If you don’t agree with COVID policy, you are marginalized and censured. If you want to buy a gun, you are tracked in the system. There are many other ways to oppress your rights, like through an army of Internal Revenue Agents. The government is not yours, it’s its own. Day by day it is taking away your rights.
As an example to demonstrate how powerful the government is, Joe Biden announced an executive order to bypass Congress and the Constitution to create a universal database on gun owners through a nationwide background check. On March 14, Biden said, “my executive order directs my Attorney General to take every lawful action possible to move us as close as we can to universal background checks without new legislation.” In addition, he has unilaterally increased “red flag” law enforcement. His concept is for parents, teachers, police officers, health providers and counselors to turn in people to the court system that they think have violent tendencies so that their firearms can be confiscated. NASA’s Webb Telescope Captures Rarely Seen
Prelude to Supernova

The rare sight of a Wolf-Rayet star – among the most luminous, most massive, and most briefly detectable stars known – was one of the first observations made by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope in June 2022. Webb shows the star, WR 124, in unprecedented detail with its powerful infrared instruments. The star is 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagitta.
Massive stars race through their lifecycles, and only some of them go through a brief Wolf-Rayet phase before going supernova, making Webb’s detailed observations of this rare phase valuable to astronomers. Wolf-Rayet stars are in the process of casting off their outer layers, resulting in their characteristic halos of gas and dust. The star WR 124 is 30 times the mass of the Sun and has shed 10 Suns’ worth of material – so far. As the ejected gas moves away from the star and cools, cosmic dust forms and glows in the infrared light detectable by Webb.
The origin of cosmic dust that can survive a supernova blast and contribute to the universe’s overall “dust budget” is of great interest to astronomers for multiple reasons. Dust is integral to the workings of the universe: It shelters forming stars, gathers together to help form planets, and serves as a platform for molecules to form and clump together – including the building blocks of life on Earth. Despite the many essential roles that dust plays, there is still more dust in the universe than astronomers’ current dust-formation theories can explain. The universe is operating with a dust budget surplus.

ER Prayer Brings Woman Back From the Dead

During the Coffeyville (Kan.) Revival a medical doctor testified of a woman rising from the dead in an Emergency Room when an Assembly of God pastor laid hands on her and prayed over her. Landon D. Vinson, M.D., who works in the Emergency Department at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC), has been witnessing to colleagues of the miracle he witnessed of God raising a woman from the dead in the Emergency Room. Now, he is telling it to churches. Rev. Randy DePriest, pastor of the First Assembly of God of Coffeyville, Kansas, and a key leader in the Coffeyville Revival, witnessed the miracle when he was called upon by the medical staff to console the woman's husband. DePriest invited Dr. Vinson to tell First Assembly of God of the miracle that they witnessed.
On a recent Sunday morning, Dr. Vinson accepted the invitation to speak. "I've seen hundreds of people at the end of their lives," Dr. Vinson said. "I am confident of being able to determine if someone was about to die or when they were 'gone.' That's part of the job description." During the height of the COVID pandemic, a woman was "down" and was taken to the emergency room in Coffeyville. She was receiving CPR when she was brought into the emergency room and was given CPR for an entire hour after arriving. Her heart stopped beating. "We did get her heart beating again, but essentially the only thing keeping her heart going was shots of adrenalin in her bloodstream and putting her on a ventilator," Dr. Vinson said, "From a medical standpoint, she wasn't alive. She was what we call 'brain dead.'"
He described to the congregation the numerous ways medical officials determine a person has died. In this instance, they found no signs of life. The woman's eyes were fixed and dilated; she showed no gag reflex and her limbs showed signs of mottling, all which precede the onset of rigor mortis. Dr. Vinson, his staff and the husband decided to remove her from life support. Feeling hopeless, as the husband's last resort he did the only thing he knew to do. He asked for someone to call Pastor Randy DePriest to come and pray. Dr. Vinson said, "Sure. We'll wait for the pastor to get here." Dr. Vinson thought that he and the nurses would simply wait for the pastor out of respect for the woman and her husband. Once Pastor DePriest arrived, he began to pray. During Dr. Vinson's meeting with the congregation, he said, "We began to pray over her. My head was bowed. There was a nurse in the room. Maybe just a couple minutes into the prayer, a machine began sounding an alarm. I thought I would just turn it off so it would not be distracting. When I looked up, spontaneous breath began coming back. I saw a hand moving on this woman."
As Pastor DePriest prayed over her, he began to ask her questions. She started nodding her head and responding. "This made no sense to me because she did not have any sign of life," Dr. Vinson said. "We had taken her off all medications. We had given her four medications to keep her heart going. Those were all turned off. But now her blood pressure was strong. It was going through the roof. She was blinking her eyes. I leaned down and asked, 'Can you hear me?' She nodded her head 'Yes.' I asked, 'Do you want us to keep going and fight?' She aggressively shook her head 'Yes.'" Dr. Vinson said, "That was the first true miracle that I've ever seen. It was a very humbling moment. I kept hearing God saying, 'That is My child. I decide who lives.'" It hit home for Dr. Vinson that medical doctors, and perhaps people in general, often think they are in control and call the shots. But Dr. Vinson told the congregation, "No! God will have the ultimate decision."
