Year-end Congress Update: 2021
|
|
Over this past weekend, as we ended the old year and rang in the new one, it seems appropriate to pause and to "see where we are now" on Capitol Hill.
The following link will take you to the blog, written by our own Legislative Analyst, Tim McGhee, and titled "Pray for Congress."
|
|
We know that you will be blessed as you scan and study the last issues that Congress addressed last month, before they left town for their Christmas recess period. To visit "Pray for Congress," please go here.
|
|
- Father God, we thank You that the House and the Senate were ordained by our Constitution, and still stand today as our Legislative Branch. In this coming election year, we pray for a miracle of grace to descend upon both chambers, as these members must grapple with issues that impact every American citizen. We ask that all rancor be set aside, and that Congress would return to governing with a spirit of true statesmanship: one that allows for lively debates, absent of any name-calling or words of ill will.
We ask for this miracle in Your Name, Abba, amen and amen.
- "Let all things be done decently and in order." (I Corinthians 14:40)

1. Anti-aircraft missiles fired at IDF helicopters during Gaza strike, but miss - Times of Israel
In a rare incident, Gazan terrorists targeted Israeli military helicopters with shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles over the Strip early Sunday morning during airstrikes carried out by the Israel Defense Forces.
During retaliatory airstrikes shortly after midnight, Hamas operatives fired two SAM-7 anti-aircraft missiles toward raiding helicopters west of Gaza City, Palestinian media outlets said.
The IDF confirmed that anti-aircraft missiles were fired at the helicopters, but would not comment on how many. The military said the missiles missed their mark and caused neither injury nor damage. (Read More)

2. IDF preparing to retaliate for rockets fired towards Tel Aviv - Israel National News
The leaders of Israeli communities near Gaza have received notification that the IDF is expecting to retaliate for the rocket fire earlier on Saturday, Channel 13 Newsreported.
According to the report, the retaliatory action is expected Saturday night.
The IDF does not buy the explanation that the rocket launches were a product of the weather and were accidental, reports said. (Read More)

3. With Iran in mind, Israel signs deal with US for heavy choppers, refueling planes - Times of Israel
Israel on Thursday signed a long-awaited agreement to purchase a dozen heavy transport helicopters and two additional refueling planes from the United States, in a weapons deal worth over $3 billion, the Defense Ministry said.
These aircraft, along with a number of additional F-35 fighter jets that Israel plans to purchase from the US, are specifically meant to counter threats posed by Iran, including its nuclear program.
According to the ministry, in addition to the fighter jets, transport helicopters and refueling planes, this includes “advanced aerial munitions, air defense systems, new naval and land-based platforms, and cyber and digital systems.” (Read More)

4. Sderot: Grenade thrown at home of senior Defense Ministry official - Israel National News
Unknown individuals on Saturday night threw a grenade at the home of a senior Defense Ministry official who lives in Sderot. Footage from security cameras showed people passing by his home, followed immediately by a grenade being thrown.
The official’s small children were at home at the time of the explosion, and miraculously there were no injuries. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which focuses on a suspicion of a conflict between neighbors.
Suspects have not yet been apprehended. (Read More)

5. Egyptian mediation efforts continue as fears of Gaza escalation loom - World Israel News
“Egypt continues to mediate between Israel and Hamas in light of the understanding that the situation in the Gaza Strip is close to exploding and that Israel and Hamas are closer to another round of violence since Operation Guardian of the Walls ended” in May, a source told TPS Sunday.
Egyptian sources say that Saturday’s launching of two rockets at the Gush Dan area is “a very worrying step,” but added that Hamas has no interest in escalating now.
The rockets were fired by Hamas and exploded in the sea. The IDF hit Hamas targets in response to the attack. (Read More)

'God's Fingerprints Are all Over This':
24 Inmates Earn Pastoral Ministry Degree in NC Prison
|
|
Family and friends recently gathered inside the gymnasium at North Carolina's Nash Correctional Institution to congratulate 24 inmates for earning their Bachelor of Arts diploma in pastoral ministry.
The group of men were the first class to graduate from The College at Southeastern's North Carolina Field Minister Program (NCFMP), which focuses on supporting and counseling fellow offenders, according to a press release from the college.
All 24 inmates, who were taught inside the Nashville-based prison by faculty from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, graduated with honors.
Now they will be divided into five teams and spread out among the state's 55 prisons to minister to other inmates while serving out the rest of their sentences.
"Almost exactly four years and four months ago today, many of us gathered here in this very gym to usher in the start of this program with our very first convocation service," said Seth Bible, director of Prison Programs at Southeastern. "We had no idea what the future would hold for our first cohort of students, but we were confident in the God that held that future in his hands."
Southeastern President Danny Akin offered his blessing to the men while reminding them that God can use anyone for His purpose, regardless of their circumstances.
"It is our prayer for all of you that you would be sent as ambassadors for Christ," said Akin. (CBN) Read more.

21 Days of Removing Fear
Day one: remove the fear of death
Replace it with God's Word as to eternal life for born-again believers in Christ.
Spend time today, one on One with the Holy Spirit, asking Him---even in five minutes of your prayer time--- if you have any fear of death. Did it begin as a child? Was it passed down to you generationally? Does that fear appear in your character today?
Allow Him, Who loves you so much, to convict you of any residue of that sin, that fear of death. With His love, exercise your free will to confess that sin. He will forgive you. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. And then decide, if you wish, to repent, to turn away from that sin stronghold, replacing it with His Holy Word as your Truth going forward. Choose His Way based on His Word.
Jesus' Word is clear: John 5:24:
" Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. "

Be Still My Soul
To listen to this classic hymn, CLICK HERE
Words: Katharina Von Schlegel
Music: Jean Sibelius
Scripture: Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10
Lyrics:
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.
Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.
Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.
Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise
On earth, believing, to Thy Lord on high;
Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,
So shall He view thee with a well pleased eye.
Be still, my soul: the sun of life divine
Through passing clouds
Shall but more brightly shine.
